tonite is exactly 1 week after one of my IST died. have been sad for a week, this pair of tortoises meant a lot to me. now i'm left with 1 IST, so i would like to make sure i'm caring it the right way.
1) am i doing it right?captivity conditions:
cage: 40cmx25cm box with "cat litter recycled paper" bedding, out of cage roaming around inside the house during weekend
food: sawi (daily), pellets (once a week), some water in feeding pan (1-2 times a week), occasionally: baby spinach, kangkung, apple, guava, carrot
exposure to sun every morning (cage located near window)
bathe once a week
is this condition suitable?
where can i buy cuttlefish bone?2) what actually happened to the dead IST?it used to eat and walk a lot, very active although it seems to have RNS all the time. it was given antibiotics before for the RNS, but i stop giving it since it was actually very active, not affected by the bubbles on its nose at all. i've cared for it for 2 years+2months. suddenly it seems to lost its appetite, not really eating. i don't know what happened, brought it to vet, was told it terribly dehydrated. so it was given sodium lactate injection, but still not eating, very weak. i brought it to work everyday, feeding it with water using syringe every 1-2 hour. after few days, it seems better, willing to open its eyes, much more stronger to move around but still not eating, no pee & poo at all. then after 1 week, it suddenly urinated a few times during the day, passed away that night. any idea what had happened? is there actually a way to save its life?
3) why both tortoises grow at different rate?the 2 IST was bought at different place different time (less than a month), but similar in size. after 2 years+ , the dead ST didn't really grows much, increment about 1cm in SCL & 40g in weight. the other existing ST grows 2cm in SCL & 100g in weight. is it normal for tortoises to
grow at different rate?
i'm sorry for my long post here. maybe i've asked a lot of stupid questions, but i really wished to learn more so that my only surviving tortoise can continue live healthily. would like to get a new companion for it but seems difficult to find. hope it won't get "depressed" living alone now......
4) actually, i have another question. i would like to keep the dead tortoise shell. don't want simply throw it into rubbish bin, but don't have proper place to bury it. so. i decided to keep it. i was told that i could freeze it in freezer, it'll shrink then can be removed from shell. then the shell must be soaked in formalin for some time. problem is i don't have formalin, so maybe will try vinegar instead. do anybody here have any experience preserving tortoise shell? any other better method?
any guidances/comments would be greatly appreciated.....thanks a lot....
Sorry to hear bout that, bro...
Grow Different becoz there got stronger & weaker.. (Dead ST/weak/Smaller size) sure kena bully .. u may try to separate them while feeding to prevent this happen..
