Hi guys, I'm a Maxis 3G Unlimited Data plan subscriber and having trouble getting the internet connection work in my new iPhone. I've tried to use the EDGE setting recommended in the FAQ and it didn't work for me.

FYI, the Wifi works prerfectly fine but I want it to be connected via Maxis 3G internet though.

Can you guys please share some advise here?

Thanks!

Hi naughtyyz, thanks for your reply.

CooLerthings, the 3g coverage has been 'alright' in my area. It worked for my Nokia N95 8gb phone. Sometime I will get 3g signal and other time will mostly be GPRS. The bottomline is I can always connect to the internet with my Nokia N95.

Did I get my setting wrong?

if u have activated 3G by dialing *133#, u have to set your APN to unet.
APN of 'net' can't be used once u have activated 3G.

even if the 3G signal is suck at the area, it will switch automatically to EDGE and then GPRS, depending on availability (supposed to).
just make sure u have put the right APN for 3G activated account (unet).

Hi LaskarCinta, thanks for the tip. I did try that previously and just had just tried it again. It still gives me the same result. Below is the new setting I just applied:

APN: unet

Your iPhone 3G official unlock or unlocked by kind of turbo-sim or such?

If official unlocked, should work perfectly but for illegal unlock, there should be NO resolution yet. Same as my previous iPhone 3G, could not use internet with same error msg "not connected to the internet" And because of that I sold my iPhone 3G. Advise you to get official unlocked sets instead of locked sets.

mmm...that's weird. myb u wanna try dial *133# again to make sure your 3G is activated.

another question here, do u use an unlocked iPhone or using a locked iPhone with *SIM solution? (turboSIM equivalent, rebelSIM, *SIM, etc etc). because most of the time people that use this kind of solution to enable them used a locked iPhone can't get data.

Hi guys, I'm using an official unlocked 3G phone from Singtel. When I dialed *133#, I received the following message from Maxis.
"Terimakasih. GPRS anda kini aktif. Hubungi .........."

Hi Cola, I've been using the 3G internet plan for more than a year. I was trying to do everything I could to make it work with iphone. smile.gif

Dear WaCKy-Angel, thank you!

Dear twinkles, i'm paying RM 99 per month.

Dear everyone,
I'm finally able to get my iPhone connected to Maxis 3G internet. To be honest with you, I didn't do much here. I repeated all my steps again from the beginning. Apparently it has something to do with the COVERAGE at my area. My guess the iphone doesn't work like my Nokia N95 8gb. I can connect to the internet easily with the n95 whereas it took iphone awhile to figure out. 50% of the time I won't be able to get online at all. This is kinda strange to me.

But anyhow, I will test my iphone 3g at some other area like KL, PJ or Subang later tonight. Hopefully the experience will be better than my area. I'll keep you guys posted.

Once again, thanks everyone for sharing your experience and advice with me. You guys are really helpful!

TS, i should say, no need to put anything at thier apn etc like what rx330 said, somehow it will not work if you put maxis setting there, me also don't put anything there and it works for me like charm( eventhough my mms still not work, now waiting my number port to celcom ).

try to clear everything in the setting, i mean no need to put all those setting there, it will work actually, give it a try and inform us if it's work.smile.gif

sorry sorry it's *136#
btw if we previously request for unlimited 3G thru operator (and after the operator asks use 3G phone or not) normally they will already activate 3G from the start. that should be the case as TS already using internet on other phone.

Hi there,

I have an iPhone 3G contract with AT&T. But I'm planning to unlock it when I go back to M'sia next Feb. So I need to know if the apps in the iPhone works with Maxis network?

If not, it defeats the purpose of all the iPhone apps right. I know about the "unofficial" method to unlock the phone, but I think it doesn't really work officially as well as AT&T. Please guide.

i'm using a iPhone 3G 16GB bought from Bangkok 2 weeks ago, software unlocked (no Turbosim, dunno how it's done), FW 2.1. iPhone origin is AT&T after checking serial number.

I have the 3G service activated and running. The minor problem that i have with Maxis 3G service with my iPhone 3G is that at areas where the 3G or EDGE is not available or even when no service, it will reconnect to the Maxis and then ask me to key in my Maxis pin again (unlocking). Anyone has this problem to when moving from a service area to a no service area ? I find a lot of areas at Klang Valley doesn't have 3G service using my iPhone but somehow my Nokia e61 works better.

Probably think it's an incompatibility issue with iPhone 3G with Maxis. The 3G service on iPhone really drain the battery, so i only turn on when i need it.

Appreciate your comments / experience. Thanks.

Dodgy bro, you mean your set is unlocked via illegal software? Not by official unlocked by Apple?

OMG! That means there's solution to un-officially unlock iPhone3G. But are you sure confirm not legally unlocked? Thx.

The serial number shows it's from AT&T. Referring to Apple site, that serial number is a locked AT&T. So, that means, there's a software unlocked it (since my is not using xSIM).

At Bangkok, a lot of the shops there sell "software unlock" and xSIM unlock as well. The seller told me they pay for the software unlock meaning i can't upgrade through iTunes.

The odd thing about my software unlock is that i have no options (i don't have that switch in the settings) to choose operator. Even when i roam it automatically selects the foreign operator. It works fine so i have no problem with it.

Probably i have to wait until the dev team / ZiPhone can do something to have a full unlock.

OMG!! That means if want to determine whether the set is official unlocked or not, have to refer to Apple site? The Apple site that you refer to check your set which shows it's locked to carrier is http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937 ? If not, can I have the website? Hopefully that the official website update recently.

frankly speaking, if you are referring to the 3g version, i have never ever heard of an unlocking process of that caliber.

If i'm not mistaken, rebelsim/turbo-sim or any bypass sim can't unlock the 3G network. So when buying the phone, you can test data/internet service, but can't 100% confirm. So I think the best way is to check the serial via http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

Is there really an "officially unlocked" iPhone 3G? None that I know of.

I'm using the iPhone 3G with AT&T carrier now. Wondering how am I gonna unlock it next time in M'sia? Since it's not meant to be sold in M'sia, therefore I think its not really compatible with the network in M'sia.

Also, I think some of the apps won't function in M'sia, liek the GPS apps. Well technically, iPhone will not work in M'sia. Even if it does, you will not fully utilize the full function of it. Of course, after you unlock it, you can make calls or SMS.

Right now, I'm looking at a backup phone just in case my iPhone 3G doesn't work in M'sia. Looking at N95.

I think M'sia nav system still not that developed yet. Works fine in S'pore partly I think its because S'pore telco have contract agreement with Apple to fully utilized the phone features.

Yeah the GPS function is not turn-by-turn unlike Garmin. I think getting a Garmin is better cos it has turn-by-turn function. No need to look at the phone while driving. End up accident only. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

pehhh coolerrrrrrrr...

BTW, GPS can anywhere in the world as long as you can receive Satt.

GPS can use as a tracking device.

Turn by turn nav based on software itself and nothing to do where doyo live.

Apple dont allow any 3rd party like tom tom to build apps for iphone 3g (turn by turn nav). In fact, they also dont allow any offline maps (fcuking sheet).Meaning you only can depend on google maps and of course it is not very detail for certain countries.

Fyi I just bought an iPhone3G 8GB unlocked from ultraportable (threat here) I using Celcom3G. Works fine with internet/data/call/sms/GPS too. rclxms.gif

3G signal is strong (KL). Everything seems to be perfect so official unlocked sets shouldn't give you any headache (what I've been worried about before I bought).

Sometimes it's better not to compare the price with others so it won't hurt you so much. biggrin.gif

Anyway, I bought it for RM2.3k, 2nd hand 8GB Singapore set. Checked in www.apple.com.sg warranty till August 2009. It's bout 2months old phone. Condition consider perfect. Some scratches behind, on the Apple logo.

Maybe you think I get it cheap, but I can tell that I lost few hundred because of nothing.

When iPhone3G first released, I bought US locked set for RM3.2k + Rebel Sim RM100. Then I sold it off for RM2.7k. Then I bought HTC Touch Pro RM2,950 + 8GB memory bout RM80. Sold my Touch Pro ystdy night for RM2.5k and bought iPhone3G today for RM2.3k.

After all, I got a really perfect working condition iPhone3G. And total lost - RM830. RM830 for nothing. If compare to your case, I don't think you bought it for RM2.3k + RM830 : RM3130 8GB unlocked set? biggrin.gif

I hope if you compare like this, you will feel you're lucky and didn't bought it as expensive as you thought.

You can take a look at my post when i'm with my ex-iPhone3G locked US set.

Okay. I have my iPhone 3G from U.S. So its a U.S unit. I'm planning to unlock it end of this year before I go home.

Looking at all the posting, I see that you guys suggest getting the Officially unlocked phone. Unfortunately, mine ain't officially unlocked, its LOCKED.

I'm guessing the software to unlock the phone (NOT USING SIM REBEL or whatsoever) is out. Is it still Ziphone software?

Even if Dev-Team come out with unlock software, it's not 100% sure that you can fully utilize all the functions in your iPhone3G.

I've used Rebel sim (by-pass sim) before, call/sms works but not internet. Sometimes when i'm talking on the phone from my area to another area (quite a distance) there will be drop calls and sudden network lost. I have to insert my sim into another phone, it will still shows no network, I have to search network manually, then insert back to iPhone3G to get it work.

It had been months for Dev-Team to develop unlocker software, they have also stated there might be no unlock software. They don't promise anything. I understand that they work very hard on it but the security for iPhone3G is far more secure than the 1st gen.

Strongly suggest you to unlock it officially or else you might be facing alot of problems that you don't wanted to and frustrated. Another word, you will regret. Try to find open box unlocker. US don't provide official unlock?

If you're coming back to M'sia, I think you can check whether Singapore provide open box unlock. As I read some other LYN forumer stated that 1 of his friend bought iPhone3G from Vodafone (Australia) locked set then bring it to Optus (Australia) to official unlock it.

U.S don't provide any unlocking service. Therefore I have to find my own ways to unlock the i3G. I thought they have the software to unlock the phone already. I saw some videos on youtube showing how to unlock. But not sure if that method of unlocking works with the network in M'sia. We'll wait til the end of the year & see what the dev-team comes up with.

That's jailbreak, not unlock. Jailbreak = allows you to install any softwares/games/apps in your iPhone3G. Without jailbreak, you can only install games from iTunes Store, either you purchase or free apps.

But with the sim adaptor, I can only make calls & sms right? That also, sometimes doesn't workds well. Now I'm beginning to worry about the unlocking issue. Darn it.

Terminating the contract with AT&T does not unlock the phone. They just cancel the service. Besides, I will have to pay a penalty fee of $175 because I terminate the contract before 2 years. But I ain't gonna pay that.

Thought of selling it on ebay & buy in S'pore. How much is it in Sg? Is it officially unlocked in Sg? So I can just buy the phone from Sg & inset my Maxis sim card, then can call already? If sold my iphone, maybe I'll get N96 lo. iPhone for gaya only IMO.

Just check this thread if you're not sure of S'pore iphone set.

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/768477 (look at the spoiler)

If CooLeRthings got his iphone from S'pore, the obvious answer to your queries are answered and many are using S'pore units here.

You can purchase a S'pore 3G iphone set from sellers in LYN garage sale and you don't have to head down to S'pore to buy it.

Oh Singtel is the official carrier for iPhone? Where can I get it in Sg? In handphone stores or get it direct from Telco?

One thing that kept on bothering me is that why M'sia doesn't have iPhone 3G stores are selling macbooks & imac's.

Is there any Apple authorized distributor or retailer in M'sia? For such a develop country like M'sia, but we are not selling iPhone's. What is wrong? Steve Jobs should seriously look into opening some Apple store in M'sia.

That's the thing in M'sia. No price control. And I HATE buying phones in Sg. Wang or KL and WILL NEVER buy from those fella's. They simply quote you rocket high prices & let you slowly bargain. Some of them are not customer friendly & tend to bully those less knowledge in hand phones.

Ooohhh

NICE ONE!!! Great job!!!

Yeah also all these handphone sellers kinda look at what you wear. They know you don't have intention to buy, they treat you like shit. No manners & very poor customer service.

I'd rather pay more for better customer services & friendly salesperson than paying less for lousy & bad customer service. They gotta change their mentality & maybe take some customer service & ethics course. OMG!

If the price is not significantly different, I would rather go to the more friendly seller. Some sellers are just rude.

OK. Apparently the turbo sim not function well in M'sia. In other places, seems like its working normally.

Yeah man, I'm thinking about selling my US set. Looking at the prices on ebay now. Can get from Sg w/o signing contract right? If so, then I'll do that. I don't want contract or whatsoever. Hassle free!

BTW, China is selling hiPhone. Very close to iPhone but the graphics suck & feels placticky. Unlock version tho. Damn these China guys can even come up with their own vers if iPhone even before the orig iPhone is in the market.
