Is it risky owning a Sager? I mean its a wonderful computer, looks great, wonderfully built and extremely customizable....but, paying $300-$500 on postage, and you also end up paying $100 for postage insurance.
Have any of you had to send your Sagers back to the States for repair?

Awh thanks for the replies guys, if I am gonna order it online, might as well do it while I am in my next destination (OZ, for uni)
but by doing this, would it be any more expensive than getting it while in Malaysia? I wouldnt think so, cos the prices are fixed online by the manufacturer, and no middlemen (retailers) involved to change pricing. Please confirm this for me though. Thanks.
I am seriously thinking about getting a Sager, its less of a headache than other laptop products as these are fully customizable. Its just so annoying when laptops have 'pros' and 'cons'...weighing them out is just troublesome. With Sager you're getting a robust and sleek chassis (unlike alienware, too 'loud' for my liking) and everything inside, you can pick!

I am based in Australia (Brisbane actually) , and I can tell you this:

DO NOT BUY IN AUSTRALIA! The only reseller there, Pioneer Computers, sell their Dreambook (Sager) laptops for ridiculous prices. The equivalent laptop to my current NP8690, the Dreambook W860CU was about $3-4K AUD, which equals to 1:1 ratio of $3-$4K USD. This was with the i5! PROCESSOR! And my XoticPC one came straight with an i7!
With that amount of money in the US or Malaysia, you can buy almost the top of the line laptop from Sager, with an SLI or CrossfireX configs. And with that in mind, I bought mine from the USA, $2K cheaper than what it is in Australia. But you get the advantage of handing them for repairs, that's it.

Detailed and convincing recommendation This is a Lamp, brilliant...thanks.

I think you need to concern about the tax.

Yeh, I just read about that 2 mins ago....the bloody Aus govt. taxes the shit out of this laptop if you order it in.
Don't you get taxed in Malaysia though?

Electronics are not taxed in Malaysia, which is the reason why I like shipping stuff here smile.gif

That would be about $200 something, for the tax. Don't know the exact number though. It's pretty hefty....
*
tahnks for the reply

Awwhh....snap! sad.gif
with that, the price jumps to almost $1700....
and I would have to bare further costs regarding shipping if I were to send it back for repairs during the warranty period....

hmm..or get this machine:
https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=1070&typeID=

around the same price point, BUT with the worry free experience of the 2 Years Onsite Pick Up & Return warranty..
What I am really puzzled about is, the current gen lappys, their pricing arent dropping much at all >: \
if they were a good 2000 or so RMs cheaper....I'd be fine with a 1st gen intel i7...but theres no discounts on the outdated tech offered by shops at lowyat plaza. If so I could pick up an XPS 15 on the cheap and it'll def last me a couple of years with fast application running, multitasking and some light gaming..and buy a more hardout notebook after I am done with uni and start working.

Since the Australian currency is 1:1 with the US dollars now, you could in fact just get a laptop from Australia. There are a couple of decent resellers there.

Cheers for the reply,

I heard its a heck of a lot more expensive buying it through an Aus retailer, getting it from the US with additional shipping and GST chargers are still alot more cheaper than getting it thru an Aus reseller.
Ive got a question to ask, how many of you Sager users have actually had to send in your lappys for repair? I mean during a period of say, 2 years (what I think is the life cycle of laptops these days, with OS and hardware upgrades coming so fast and furious).
and lastly, the Sager reseller in Singapore, sgcubehubs...do they offer Sager notebooks for sale at their shops 'physically'? or do you have to go to a little office and order them in or something? If theyve got units for sale at their retails stores, I am gonna pick up a NP8130 from there, its a lil over US$1550, which is pretty fairly priced.

Added on January 29, 2011, 11:41 amand to confirm what I read on a forum before, yes Aus resellers bump up the prices like crazy..

http://p4laptops.com.au/gaming-laptops-laptops-for-games.htm

theyre all over $3000!!
So, with the Aus and Us dollar being at 1:1 ratio, you're ending up getting raped if you buy through an Aus retailer.

WooHoo! OMFG!!! I found a reseller that actually sells Sager/Clevo/Metabox...which ever you call it...laptops at the same-ish price that you would get in the US : D : D : D
and since I could get it locally, I'd be eligible for the 1 year on-sight pick up and delivery warranty!
this is too good to be true....I am so effing happy!

this is the same as the Sager NP8130

This is a Lamp.....do you know which reseller is better, affordablelaptops.com.au or logicalblueone.com.au

the former is located in Perth, been around longest.
the latter in Queensland, closer to me as I'd be in Sydney.

Things like warranty slightly differ...but with your experience, which reseller would you recommend. This is important as build quality would vary somewhat, as theyd be bringing in barebones and putting them together locally..and also theres the after sale service factor.

Lastly, you're in OZ arent you? then why have you chose to get your NP8150 from the States.....any reasoning behind that?

I'm based in Brisbane, QLD. I personally think LogicalBlueOne is a better reseller. It doesn't matter if they are barebones or not, they are still Clevo. It is still the same quality, same laptop smile.gif. But what matters is the price (for me) and the service.

So far, LBO has answered my questions well. Second also, they are closer to me, and since they are closer to Sydney, then I would assume that the shipping is lower. It seems that their pricing is lower at times, and they offer DDR3 1600, which isn't available in 95% of the Sager resellers around the world.

And why I chose in the States? Because they are cheaper...by a small margin. I like to reek out abit of money out if I can and get the deal that doesn't clear my wallet fast enough. Not only that, I had experiences with US resellers before, and didn't like the OZ resellers before Logical. Price difference was enormous. Also, I am in Malaysia for awhile, before heading back...and I kinda like the laptop in my hands before heading back to OZ again.

And finally, we're in Malaysia! The electronics here are like food; cheaper than many western countries. I can upgrade the modules/components here easily and I'd like to do that before going back.

Australia, frankly is pretty outdated in tech...

smile.gif thanks for the reply, it was very helpful

Yes indeed, Ive been in contact with LBO and AL since last night, and it was only LBO that got back to me...twice! AL are still yet to..
The other thing I like is, their website is easier to navigate/use hehe
AL tho, pride them selves in being the oldest most established reseller of Clevos in Australia, 10 years of experience.
They say their machines are built by 'ITC mobile computing'.
The price indeed is the most important factor, and thats why Ive gone with Clevo, it gives you more power for every dollar you spend than any other laptop manufacturer.
LBO also offer a stock 3 year warranty period, but this makes their notebooks a couple of hundred dollars more expensive. The AL machines are slightly cheaper, but come with only a 1 year warranty, if you upgrade to 3 years..it passes the cost of getting it from LBO. So theres that to consider as well.
I need my lappy soon, and with the floods up in Queensland, delivery has been on halt for quite some time sad.gif

I am thinking of getting the NP8150 with a HD in the optical drive bay tongue.gif so I can fit an SSD in there.

Now I understand why you had ordered from the US, since ure in Malaysia right now. You can avoid the gst and upgrade it easily and cheaper like you said. But what about warranty?would you be able to send it in for repairs at either LBO or AL? or would it have to go all the way to the US, with you having to bare the shipping costs?
If so, wouldnt you be better buying from OZ? ok its slightly more expensive, but you have that completely worry free experience with the 3 year onsight pick warranty cocooning you..give me your thoughts please.

Check with Sager/Clevo whether it's SATA III in the optical drive or not.
I heard the optical driver only has SATAII.

It's alright if you don't mind SATA II or III.

And for the HDD bay, I suggest you put your bigger plated hard drive instead of the SSD, and place your SSD in the actual laptop, as Alune pointed. I don't think you get the speeds you want in regards to the SSD, from the bay.
*
Thanks for that guys, I'll keep that in mind. smile.gif

Aw no! I hope ur stuffs not f**cked Lamp...the waterbed thing made me chuckle x)

I thought I'd pick up some components from Lowyat before I head to OZ. Like the bracket/frame thing I need for the optical bay. And would it be cheaper for me to buy an SSD from Lowyat? I am not looking for something hardcore, an Intel 40GB SSD would do fine, I am just gonna run the OS, some programs and maybe squeeze in a game if I can.
the 7200rpm drive that comes with it....um, if I put it where the optical drive is supposed to go...would it have the same cooling solution provided like a dedicated HHD bay would? I'd assume not, as I dont really notice any vents below the dvdrom area. Thats why I thought I'd place the SSD there as it doesnt heat up like a mechanical drive would.

I am not an expert when it comes to Clevo machines...but what are their product cycle like? Are these new products? would I regret not waiting like a couple of weeks more when another even better line comes out? I know the over used saying about not chasing tech, but give me an idea how future proof a NP8150 would be.
