if you google it you will know why. the sound may sound like from above.. but actually from the other floor or the other unit far from your unit. the sound just travel..
So I got the same issue, neighbor above doing something like fixing furniture, walking, dropping metal stuff at 2-3 am repeated. So If you try to knock them with stick, they bite you back saying you are making noise...bla bla bla. Since it is intermittent noise, it is hard to catch them on red hand. I been discussed with them, some of the family members are good, but not all will stay silent at midnight especially young one with bad temper.
I been go through a lot with them, and from my experience you are advised not to knock them back (broom stick or any tools), later they will say you making noise.
the best is find some hidden cam/phone cam/sound recorder, walk to their unit at midnight (during making noise), complain to them, trick them to admit they are conducting noise at midnight remember to take video with their face. It will become good proof to show it to management or judges. So lucky I got one video they admitted fixing some IKEA thing at 4am, now uploaded to youtube in private mode.
So bad living with low quality neighbor. check this, German are not allowed to vacuum at Sunday (https://www.angloinfo.com/blogs/germany/life-off-the-autobahn/never-vacuum-on-a-sunday/). I hope some people will get mindset upgraded.

I think recording video of neighbour noise inside your own unit is NOT a good proof compare to they admitting it face by face. Remember to upload it to YouTube and keep few copies in your cloud drive.
I am not first timer stay in high-rise. At least 2 uni hostel, 4 appartment / condo i stay before this, but this is the first unit I owned, maybe my renovation offended them. But I been accepting their *dinosaur walk* , *dragging chair*, *hulk run* and *steel ball dropping* for 2 years, enough is enough!
Polite talk is not permanent if the person have bad nature, they might silent for a period but end up they will forgotten one day. Also you are deal with 1 family and not all family members will care your complaint.

some of the noises you hear are proven not caused by human.
like the ball dropping sound, its actually water pipping.
chair dragging - also not caused by actual ppl dragging chairs and I believe what one forumer here said, sound travels. It might not be from your direct unit above.
I also hear sound like this on all apartments I stayed. cant be every tenant above me love to drop rolling steal ball, dragging chairs and etc.

my neighbour is a technician, so he always hammer thing during day or night, what I do is just to wearing a headset and listen mp3.
or open my TV louder, so it can cover up the noise.
Unless one buy over unit above, it is not possible to stop noise. Installing false ceiling with sound absorption materials could reduce noise from above.
