BARAKA
THE FIELD REPORT

A poem of visuals, sound and music. A reminder to who we are on the planet Earth with all its inhabitants. There's no narration, no script, just a collection of images that just make you fall in love with life again. Not just through the wonders of nature, but also through our own diversity of cultures and religions. Truly something extraordinary. Shot on 24 countries around the world, the synopsis on the back says "These are the wonders of a world without words, viewed through man and nature's own prisms of symmetry, savagery, chaos and harmony". Baraka: A Closer Look documentary also included that chronicles the making of the Baraka.

The video was shot using a camera custom assembled by the director Ron Fricke himself, using a 70mm Todd-AO which almost everyone in Hollywood has abandoned - saving costs over quality. It was then scanned at 8k horizontal resolution (4 times 1080p vertical resolution), and then the digital intermediate was restored and used to create (downsampling) the 1080p transfer to this BD. There's also a short documentary on how the restoration was done. It is unlike anything you've ever seen on your display panel. They are breathtaking with sharp, detailed and colorful. Everything seems accurate and the most importantly is how life like it looks. Those demo discs you see in showrooms with scenes shot on HD seems very bright and vivid, but ultimately looks plastic and fake, with no depth. Baraka is what real HD should look like. Undoubtedly a demo material for all Blu-ray owners.

The audio is presented losslessly using DTS-HD Master Audio 24-bit/96kHz (except for few concert BDs, there are no other BDs to 24/96 sampling as of now). I bought the Planet Earth series to marvel at the HD video, never expect anything great for the audio. At first I thought the same thing with Baraka, but when I see the track name on the specs, I knew this will be something different. I was really surprised to how the surrounds were used so effectively on this disc. It's so enveloping, the orchestral instruments, flutes, horns, the chanting, hovers around you with great, it got the hairs on my neck stood up! Every stroke on the string felt so real. And the bass/LFE, forget those action movies, here is the real thing. the waterfalls, waves, trees falling down, the percussions and drums, you'll get the deepest bass your subwoofer can ever produced. Another winner, undoubtedly a must for all audiophiles.

This is a definite must own for true lovers of poems. True lovers of nature. True lovers of documentaries. True lovers of HD video. And true lovers of lossless audio. True lovers of Blu-ray. And you don't have to be all of those to reward yourself with this gem.

PS: I recommends that you watch this with all the proper display and audio setup. That's the best way to appreciate this, I'm already thinking about the Pioneer Kuro while watching it just now.
