Hi all, I am using Tomtom but most of the time Poor GPS Reception and the maps are really outdated. The Tomtom GPS Car Kit cost a bomb and it has the feature to enhance GPS reception not sure if its effective. Overall I think still better to rely on devices like Garmin.

GPS signal requires a clear view of the sky. It's harder to get a good signal when it has less view of the sky eg under dense forest or "urban jungle". U won't get GPS signal inside a building.
About map coverage, I find that Teleatlas map used in TomTom and Sygic has very good coverage in major cities. It have roads to my village in Terengganu where even Malsingmap has yet cover that road. For rural areas, it depends. It has decent coverage in my area (Bandar Enstek, Nilai), missing 2 road (N163 & partial Jalan Kuarters KLIA) and a small town (Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi). Weather u can live with that or not depends on you. If u're willing to contribute updates to Teleatlas map, u can report to their Map Insight website at http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback/index.php A sample report I submitted : http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedbac...5b66ef7da3b8/en |

I don't understand WHY????
i am able to locate the current location via google map, but when turning on sygic or tomtom , these apps just cant get any gps signal. Another thing which is bothering me is that although i use google maps to navigate, the current location is always offset a couple of miles, WHY? Anyone mind to answer? just a curious question guys. since we know gps would drain battery life faster than we arrive at our destination (with screen always on), are all these apps good enough to be used as voice navigation? what if we use the handsfree and just listen to the guide? will it still drain the battery a lot? I'm thinking of using it on motorcycle. if we use it in car then we can pretend to be a rally driver

I've tried both apps and find that TomTom has poor route logic compared to Sygic. TomTom tends to bring me the long way around - it doesn't recognize U-turns and has happened a couple of times. I however can't stand Sygic's keyboard.
Sygic: + Better navigation + Better features (auto night mode, lane assist, advance settings) - Horrible keyboard - Less stable (seems to crash out more) TomTom: + Better GUI (if you like menus, I think icons are just fine) + Fast operation and POI lookups + Better 3D maps (it's easier to sort multilevel routes/highways) Signal lock, battery drain, map data all about the same. Nothing to compare there. All in all, I feel Tomtom is a more simplistic app compared to the slightly advance Sygic, but who can tahan it's keyboard? Argh! |

the gps in Iphone actually is not a truly GPS that rely 100% latitude/longitude data from satellite. It is a Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) which rely on 3 NodeB/transmitters of telco and processor will try to calculate your exact location. (most of the mobile can only listen to 3 transmitters at a time, or Rake Fingers)
I am not sure wether chip set in Iphone can breakfree from these A-gps and just received data directly from satellite. So we dont have to rely on 3G connection in order for us to get our location reading. just my 2 cents. |

Recently I had the opportunity to meet up with a product manager from Sygic. After having spoken to him, I can understand the constraint he has especially the fact that they try to make sygic work across as many platforms as possible. Regarding the keyboard, he also acknowledged that it is something that's often raised and they take the feedback in a positive manner.

Sygic strikes back!
Sygic mobile is now on sale..$59.99 the same price like tomtom..and there is map update as well.. Those that have bought it, please update..I would like to know how well the map database now.. Currently still relying on Garmin and MapKing.. They even give you iphone default keyboard as a response to the criticism on the first.. But most importantly the map..how good it is? 80% of malaysia will do for me to buy this This post has been edited by mmmbop: Dec 4 2009, 12:27 PM |
