my p4 is also quite long already. p4 2.0GHz, still using sdram. just waiting for some parts to spoil..but seems that this mobo is more lasting than i have expected it to be
i feel that it's no point upgrading, since i dont really have choices to upgrade also. might as well jump to new tech when the p4 comes to its time. |

@edmin
my p4 rig cmos battery has been there for 5-6 years or more. havent changed it before. however my friend's dell much newer than mine had his cmos battery died on him already. and i wonder why the machine has a problem of detecting drives, sometimes the optical drive appears undetected. i have another dell machine too facing the same problem. have you seen that problem before? |

i like dell's idea of cooling, especially those newer 775 models. but their locking system for the cooling is a bit complicated, i tried to open the brackets to check the processor..
end up not opening anything at all..tough one to open |

yeah, when the dell blower runs at full speed can be even noisier than my gc fan
actually is it really effective? |

my friend's planning to have an upgrade. he wants to be able to play hd videos smoothly. which part should he upgrade? graphic card?
he's using a p4 3.0GHz HT now. that should be sufficient rite? |

currently he's using 1.5GB RAM, gc is just a normal radeon 9200.
besides the hardware, there's some tweaking need to be done at the software side too rite? |

nope, not sure about the config of the ram, but i know it isn't running on dual channel, coz he's running 3 sticks.
so for gc's that can handle HD, which one should he go for? |

what i know is 9550 doesnt have built-in avivo like the newer series. could that be the cause of the high utilisation?

i also not so sure how to use, is it when a small "Haali Media Splitter" icon comes out means it's using coreavc?
installed on my friend's p4, the video lags behind the audio. |

yeah it depends a lot on the cpu. my friend finally got the coreavc working with media player classic, and tested with some 720p and 1080p videos. can play much smoother already, without skipping and lagging. occasionally i think there's still some very very slight lag, but barely noticable. checked the task manager, the cpu usage is around 90%+. nearly 100% already

there'll be quite some improvement, as the x1650 is 2 generations after 9600. as for the old gc, if for normal display purposes it should support 24", i doubt it can do gaming at that reso
i think i kinda agree with what ray says..better shift to newer tech already, since new stuff coming out every now and then. use this p4 until you think it's time to jump to newer tech afaik, win 7 runs better on older pcs than vista does. |
