QUOTE(WarHawk @ Oct 28 2008, 07:13 PM)
Hi mate,
Have you ever thought, that if the government legalize airsoft as a sport, how they can regulate the selling of the toy?. MASOC are suggesting installation of a tracking chip in each of the toy. Is it practical to do so? or what do you think if we issue a new bill in the parliament that airsoft are just a toy until it is misused. If individual misuse it, then it will become a firearm ( then the guy who use for the wrong reason will be charged under firearm act). British parliament and some state in US approve this Bill and put it into act. Or we just make it like the military camp - spray a serial number and kept it in the armoury?. This is the best three option I can think of. Maybe we can discuss the pro and cons of each option or, maybe some of us can pour in a better ideas!

Sincerely,
WARHAWK
*
Honestly, idea 1 and idea 3 sounds good. Idea 3 i think is practiced in the Phillipines right? Except the armory. They are serialized, and a small fee must be paid for registration, but i not sure whether they are supposed to keep it in the armory or not.

As for idea 1, it is feasible as long as they are talking about passive RFID chips. Very cheap, but requires expensive readers. They cant be tracked more than a certain distance away but at least if someone wants to use it in a robbery, police can easily identify whether the gun they using is a airsoft or not.

But the problem with all this idea is that every piece has to be purchased via a 'sole distributor' which will do all the chipping/serializing. So no more oversea order, etc. Unless they open a service to chip already owned airsoft, for a small fee. That would be good.

Whatever the idea, just no two tone please sad.gif.

Also, i think i can develope idea 1 further since i have some knowledge in rfid, as long as masoc isnt going the rfid line tongue.gif

Hi mate,
Do you mind telling us how the RFID works, what are pros and cons and of course, the cost of each unit?
*
An example of RFID application is the touch and go card. Basically a small piece of electronic sensor can be embedded into the airsoft and it contains various information such as owner, gun type, date of purchase, etc la. From there the gun can be tracked to its owner, etc.

A reader will be used to read the chip inside the weapon. Readers typically range from close range type 5cm radius, up to meters away, depending on type of chip, and type of reader.

Price of such chip are pretty low actually, averaging RM1 each, some cheaper, some more expensive, depending on their specifications.

I have further ideas for this, as well as i can build the system if need, but i require more research into it smile.gif

IMHO, to control AEG or airsoft flooding, suggest to the body that only one distributor will be legalized. In other words, only a sole company will have the license to import airsoft and to manage them/ and it has to be government monitored to avoid certain things that most monopoly firms do.

AEG owners on the other hand, can contribute back to society by strictly islanding illegal owners, namely those whose AEgs are without embedded chips inside and without the orange tip. Islanding them includes banning them from getting to scrims/games/wars/sims/expos/gatherings.

There are many ways actually, but all that matters are the nod of a few important heads then this sport will be good to go. =)
*
I do agree with your idea but i believe having two bodies instead of a single body would be better as a single body would monopoly the whole sport, and government monitoring wouldnt do much to help sad.gif.

Islanding idea is a good one tho. That would help to encourage illegal owners to register their piece smile.gif

QUOTE(air @ Oct 29 2008, 09:11 AM)
Instead of letting them take the initiative to check the car, why dont you tell them you got replicas and get them read by card reader? By trying to hide the replicas, you are asking for a beating before checking, that is the price of trying to be sneaky since you wont let card reader to help you get over this.

Be nice and cooperate with policeman during checking and play it cool, if you not cool enough, they nail you first before you try to do something fishy.

the 4th point you mention is not constructive enough... instead of having many card reader which is cumbersome(not efficient), why dont just let them check one by one?

Instead of using only card reader, we can come up with a solution that provide a direct sweep scan to recognize initial status of replicas before checking the car thoroughly: such as an active area scanner, then proceed by a card reader checking process.

my point here is:

1. Scan the car with active scanner/driver tell the policeman about replicas first
2. Checking by card reader

That should smooth out a lot of process and keep it cool along all the time.

how to play it cool? You anticipate the policeman reaction of these replicas, you play it along and not intimidating them to get over with the process.

If the person who did not do that, he/she is deserved to be nailed by force before nego.
*
Multiple read can be done very easily. In fact when police is driving they can already know the amount of airsoft weapons within a certain amount of radius of their vehicle, provided they have the scanner in that vehicle.

All this reaction are true of now, but we are talking about in the future if we "CAN" educate the gov, and the people, on the sports. Of course if you want to actually legalize it at the first place, a proper system must be proposed that can convince the lawmakers that the system can reduce unwanted occurance from happening in airsoft sports ma tongue.gif.

Bro Air.

You didn't get my point. I am referring to the 1st reaction. The boys in blue will not take any risk in checking 1st or listening to your story. What preventive or action will they deploy when they see a almost real thing or a real firearm. It can be a replica or a real thing cuz it can really threat a life if the real thing.

They will draw their guns on you 1st. Any where in the world, police will draw their gun the moment they see or detect any firearms then only they talk. it's a SOP in our country too.

You do have a point, thats why, an unavoidable method might be to paint the tip orange blaze, or worse still, do dual tone lo. And seeing that we're not as liberal as US, but more like UK, if this were to happen, we're most probably gonna be dual toning the damn guns. Pink and green perhaps? cry.gif

Bro.

My guess is that they will only agree if the replica are Mini's.  tongue.gif Minis will not cause any confusion between real and replicas. As for educating, it will take a very very very long time for them to see the light.  tongue.gif

p/s : try educate Mickey 1st then we see how. LOL  tongue.gif ( I just couldn't let it go in poking fun at him. Sorry sorry My bad!)
Its good to see a lot of responsible enthusiasts in this forum. Kudos to all of you mates!

However, here's my take on control of these items. I think the whole chip thing is ridiculous. First of all, this is a toy (although it does fall into a grey zone of being just that), with that in mind, a toy will sell like a toy. If its legalized, I would assume prices would drop a fair bit from its current state and seeing as how active this market is as it stands currently, I dare say it will be a healthy market here in our beloved land.

Now if they sell like toys do, that means that there will be a vast market that becomes incredibly hard to control over time. Imagine the government putting chips in your toys from Hasbro....... that would mean the government would be fiscally hard-pressed to control it.

Once again, I'm not saying I have a better or more original idea but I think all we need to do is look to some countries that have them legalized like the US or Japan. If you understand their way of controlling these items, you'll realize that they will fit just nice into our public safety system. If you think only msian police are the only ones who practice shoot first, ask questions later, you are wrong. That's because ALL police officers are trained for life preseverance, namely their own life first. So if you pull out a gun (replica or not) and the officer deems you as hostile and decides you are a threat to his life, he WILL pop you first..... why do you think they practice so hard for a quick-draw?
*
I do agree with your views on the police issue, where by they have the rights to defend their lives, this matter falls onto the public and the respective airsoft user to keep their weapons away from public places and from public eyes. What they do with the gun themselves, are their responsibility.

But as far as the chipping and serialing goes, the purpose of such a thing is to prevent the misuse of guns for illegal activities. For example, an airsoft owner is responsible for each and every weapon he buys, and is not allowed from transfering ownership. So lets say, if he lost his gun, and he doesnt report it, the gun could be picked up by a potential robber to be used in a robbery. If the police confiscate airsoft guns from criminals, they are able to track the gun back to its original owner, and maybe fine or punish the person for not taking care of their airsoft guns. Besides that, if a gun is overmodified beyond the pre-set power limit, again, the gun can be traced back to its original owner. Thus having a serial number/chip on the gun discourage airsoft owners from doing illegal things with their weapons, and encourages airsoft owners to be responsibile of the use of such weapons. We are not talking about Hasbro kids toys here. We're talking about adult toys that has the potential to inflict pain and cause damages. Thus it has to be regulated, and owner be encouraged to use it with respect and care.

Just like what the government is doing now with handphones. So that people wont just buy and use it for illegal purposes as now every mobile number has to be registered. If its lost, the original owner has the responsibility to report lost to prevent any liability upon himself.

Hi mate,
Thanks mate Daijobou. Certainly you are right. with tracking device attached we could at least hamper if not prevent the possibility of misuse of airsoft. If airsoft owner fail to report the loss of his AEGs and his lost airsoft are used to commit atrocities, I was thinking that maybe we can pass an amendment in the parliamnet whereby the owner are charged under 2nd degree conspiracy in relation to the crime committed using his lost AEGs. Anybody's a lawyer here? we could use your opinion.

Sincerely,
WARHAWK

What do you think of SOS?
*
Yup basically, people musn't see airsoft just as some other toy, but treat it with respect and responsibility like they would with their mobile number, mykad, and driver's license. Just as all of those items can be used for illegal activities, so does airsoft weapons. This creates a sense of needing to take proper care of the airsoft weapons, not just chuck it around like any toy la. And like those items, when an airsoft weapon is lost, it has to be reported at police stations.

Btw bro warhawk, what is SOS?
