I'm using DiGi EDGE on a HSDPA modem, basically it is the same as your phone. Reason I bought a HSDPA modem was actually for my previous HSDPA broadband services, since I have unsubscribed it and opted for DiGi EDGE, so might as well use EDGE SIM card on it.
From speed's prospective, it has no significant difference compared from using phone as a modem.

One thing good about my modem is, it emits heats betters than a phone. Not good to use phone as a modem if for long term usage, you are actually putting your phone's IC on risk. For me, I'm a happy modem user because my EDGE is connected 24/7.

You may have a try though, strangely your EDGE has problem with MSN.
