I'm already on a joint account with my dad in the UK . A credit card means opening another credit account , it's not part of the joint account bro . There is no joint account for the credit card account because I do not qualify .  And because of that , the credit card account will not appear in my online banking . I'm already on online banking , and I can check my HSBC account in malaysia from my Online Banking in the UK through the HSBC global view service smile.gif
*
May be it is your underage issue. I don't know. Otherwise I am 100% certain you can get your very own credit card under UK HSBC and since it is your very own, it will appear in your online banking but not visible on your dad's online banking.

This is because, for joint account, your dad will be given a totally different log name and password that will only allow him to see what he is entitled to. And vice versa.

Im talking about using Malaysia credit card from HSBC malaysia to pay UK tuition fee. They told me there will be 1.5% interest.

I know credit card has no interest too if you use it in the same country.
*
The good news are:
1. The exchange rate given by Visa/Mastercard, in majority of times, better than bank draft or telex transfer rate buying GBP.

2. There is no interest for any card from any country using it in another country, as long as you pay them on time.

The bad news is:
But for Malaysian card used overseas, the vast majority of bank will charge an extra 1 to 2% as administration cost. AFAIK, the only bank that don't is Alliance Bank.

I already have GBP in hand. thus buying bank draft and bringing to UK is the best way to save extra charges I guess. Bank draft only cost few ringgits... Isnt that right ?
*
Telex Transfer takes about 2 or 3 days to reach. Malaysian bank charges range from RM10 to USD40 or RM140 yawn.gif

Furthermore, UK bank will charge you as well. About GBP6 or RM35 (?)

For bank draft, it can be free sometimes or a mere few ringgit. Once you deposited into the UK bank, will take less than a week to clear. Another option is to send the bank draft directly to your UK bank by registered post taking another week. So maximum 2 weeks before you get the money.

BTW, do try to open a Malaysia HSBC normal account in joint name and get an ATM card. You can use that card in UK and it is the FASTEST way of money transfer. A mere few minutes and great for emergency.

I already have Malaysia HSBC premier account. I got malaysia HSBC's credit card and atm.  If I use atm to transfer, there will not be any charges huh ?
*
If you have Malaysia Premier, then ask the Malaysian HSBC to help you set up a UK Premier + UK Premier Credit Card + Debit Card + ATM + whatever you wanted for free. If you have given them enough time to sort things out, it may even be there waiting for you all ready when you go to UK.

Then using your UK Premier CC in UK would not incur any administrative charges plus having free insurance coverage.

Transferring money from your Malaysia Premier to your UK Premier is free of charge using their online service and probably instantaneous.

Having Malaysian Premier and UK Premier is making you the envy of many people. So enjoy it.

I would suggest HSBC or Lyolds since they have higher interest rates. HSBC has this high deposit bond account @ 5.4% (so if you have 3k in there, you get 10pounds a month). Lyolds has this 5.8% thing till 2012.
*
Can you pls show me the link to such high interest rate at HSBC?

best to make sure where they manufacture it though. bought the sainsburys one and it was Horrible. Made in Nigeria. They change the recipe according to location so best to bring the Milo from M'sia.

If I'm correct, Natwest has a pretty good savings rate. HSBC's is really bad now.
*
For 1 year fixed interest saving (not monthly saving), Natwest is no better than HSBC. Lloyd and Barclays better at 3% but you can get higher elsewhere.

Lucky decided to get meal plan so i dun have hurry in needing money yet to makan.. and met a cleaning lady who borrow me a duvet.. Its cold in the night..
Bit shock seeing so many europeans also.. and dun even dare to mix with them..They look garang to me.. biggrin.gif
Even so feel like making some local friends but need alot of courage to go up to some student group society...Seems like asians are bit weird to them.. I duno maybe am thinking too much..  Really need some time to ponder around..Sorry to rant here..I shall gather more courage to go to student union of sort alone tomorrow.. Good luck to those coming and to me too... haha..  rclxms.gif

You worry too much. What can they do to you? Eat your? Of course not.

So just let your hair down, pick up your courage, mix around and you will probably find a few are just as scare as you are and as eager as you are to make friends.

this is so true. although they send you email that you are not successful, they won't tell you why. coz they don't want to have any trouble by telling you that you are not local or what. if they mention that, there is possibility get sue because of discrimination race.

sometimes at work, although you are friends/always joke with them, they will say something bad/laugh you with their own words (which makes you like a fool). these happen every where.
*
Some would laugh at typical Chinese surnames like Wong, Tong, Tang etc. They just don't realize European surname are just as funny....RoundBottom, Shoe-Maker, Butcher etc.

how much cash to bring when going to uk for the first time? i'm bringing bank draft but im scared that it will take a long time to clear.
*
Bring cash and a Malaysian ATM card with either Cirrus or PLUS logo but make sure you activate it before leaving Malaysia. You can use that ATM card to withdraw Pounds from any UK ATM machines and charges ranges from 0 to RM12 per withdrawal. Also bringing a Malaysian credit card would be desirable but not essential.

bank draft will do.
got mine cleared the next day.
*
Yes, please define the word "clear". There are 2 meaning:

1. The figure shows up in your account the very next day BUT you CAN NOT use the money yet because it has not been "cleared".

2. The money is truly "cleared" meaning you can now use that money. Will take a few more days. 1 week sounded about right.

If it is the later, then you will be in deep trouble when you run out of money.

As i said, best is you bring your Malaysian ATM card for emergency withdrawal of cash from any UK ATM machine (but note which type of ATM card and it must be activated in Malaysia first).

foreign drafts drawn on a uk bank takes about 3-5 working days to clear, but i have it available for withdrawal as quick as 2 working days.......
*
If money not cleared, I strongly doubt the bank will allow you to withdraw unless you have some sort of special arrangement with them like overdraft or very long standing customer. For a newbies, I strongly discourage trying your luck that the bank will allow you to do that. After all, why should they risk giving you money before your bank draft are cleared? What if your bank draft bounces?. In fact, right after this financial crises, banks are known to decline trade letter of credit issued by other banks.

Fixed or Time Deposit or Interest Bond. AFAIK, Same thing but different name.

1 year fixed rate.
Barclay is 2.5%
Lloyd is 3%
HSBC is 3.25%
The highest is Northern Rock at 3.7%.
Natwest don't have 1 yr

2 yrs fixed rate.
HSBC is 3.5%
Barclay 3.75%
Lloyds 3.75%
Natwest is 4.2%

Bottom line: Shop around.
