Getting a new one as in 3G model would set you back for 2.5k and above and 1.6k above for 2G while replacing the LCD is around 800 and below. It's your call.

Looks like the Dev team did it again. Pawnagetool 2.2.5 and Quickpwn 2.2.5 just been released. To those that want to upgrade to firmware 2.2.1, please go to the Dev Team Blog and READ, READ and READ.

No need. Just upgrade your phone to 2.2.1 then use Quickpwn to JB. Only need to reinstall back 3rd parties app after that.

Can use an app in cydia to backup the list of the things you already installed and then reinstall it back. Can't remember the app name, aptbackup or something.

Actually we can also change the boot logo in Quickpwn but it requires some 'extra' steps to be taken.

Personally I like Quickpwn more than Pwnagetool but it's according to one's preferences.

If restore or upgrade, the apps from AppStore will always be there when you sync it back. Only 3rd party apps will be deleted and need to re-install everytime you upgrade or restore.

In your case, you just need to use Quickpwn to jailbreak. Jailbreaking using quickpwn will not delete your apps from AppStore. Let say after this Apple come out with firmware 2.3 (example) and you already jailbreak and install some 3rd party apps from Cydia, once you upgrade or restore to that firmware, you'll lose the 3rd party apps from Cydia but the apps from AppStore can always be sync back from itunes. Means you have to reinstall every 3rd party apps again after a restore or upgrade and jailbreak the phone.

Hope you get this.

Swirlymms tied your software to your phone's IMEI number. So if you lose or change your phone, u need to buy the license (not app) again. If you restore (not format) the same phone, then u just need to fetch the license again from their servers.

I think you did not fully download aptbackup last time. Thats why don't have the icon.

I am so feddup. I really need help. I have been googling for 3 damn hours already. I am trying to backup all my contacts and sms from my 1.1.2 iphone 2G but when I manage to SSH into the phone, I cannot find the files to backup nor the directory where the contacts and sms is stored. Will someone kindly please add me to their msn j45on@msn.com and guide me step by step on how to upgrade to firmware 2.2.1?

MANY THANKS TO THOSE WHO HEAR ME!
*
Bro .. first of all, where did you browse to find the directory?

Izzit /private/var/root or /private/var/mobile?

Why? B'coz prior to 1.1.4, the address and sms are stored in /private/var/root/Library/AddressBook and SMS.

After 1.1.3 only it moved to /private/var/mobile/Library

Hi i am planning to get an iphone 3g from australia next week. A year later im gonna bring the phone back and hopefully be able to use my sim via software unlock. However Pwnange Tool is only for Mac so im guessing if im running windows i won't have any luck?

In the meantime it's okay for me to upgrade to firmware 2.2 right and not 2.2.1? Without using Pwnage Tool.

Thnx in advnace!

If getting from Aus, no need software unlock. U can ask the telco that you subscribe to unlock it for you.

Ok, that works great!

1. Can the files backup of the 1.1.2 firmware work in 2.2.1?
Yes

2. Now that I have backup the SMS, Calendar, CallHistory, AddressBook, Maps, Photo and DCIM folder, can I proceed to upgrade directly from 1.1.2 to 2.2.1?
Yes

3. Do I have to use the 2.2.1 file from the download link for iphone 2G or 2.2.1 from iTunes 8?
Download the firmware and save it so you can restore it later in the future.

4. Do I have to hold Shift+Restore or just click Restore when I upgrade from 1.1.2 to 2.2.1 from iTunes?
Shift+Restore and find the firmware that u just downloaded

I tot it's forbidden to discuss warez or crack apps in here? Or the policies already change and I didn't know about it?

Did you use BootNeuter to unlock the phone again? Upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.2.1 also upgrade the baseband so it need to be unlock again. Since you only use quickpwn, I assume you did not use BootNeuter to unlock the phone.

First of all ... is your friends (Ben) phone a locked iPhone i.e from US, UK and other locked region phones?

If it was that easy to unlock the baseband, wouldn't the DevTeam figured it out already?

Sorry for being skeptical but unless your friend can furnish some evidence i.e screenshot of the "About" page showing the Model/Part No and it's from those locked regions + baseband 4.22.01 = Telco Signal, then this is just not believable.

p/s - as far as I know, the baseband for beta 3.0 is 04.20.01

Of course it is unlock. Looking from the model/part number (MB489ZA) refers to Singapore/Malaysia set which is OFFICIALLY UNLOCK SET. U can upgrade or downgrade the phone to any baseband and it will remain unlock no matter if the baseband is from a beta version. Nothing to shout or be happy about unless the model/part no show its from a locked country.
