I know that by playing guitar, the fingertips will get hardened. But do you get the same thing by play violin?

I play the violin and the guitar.

By playing the violin, your fingertips will be hardened but not a lot. Just like about 10% hardened compare with guitarist fingertip.

guitar strings are harder than violins?

yes, or no. depends on the setting of the violin and what kind of strings you use.

steel strings and bad setting (string height is too high), then you'll get the same result as playing guitar but still not as bad though. synthetic core strings (like Dominants, Tonica etc etc) are much easier on the fingers and given the strings height is lower, you don't feel anything when pressing on the strings.

like guitar, string height is not always the lower the better.

One more thing to add is violinist do not have to press hard on the fingerboard to get the note compare with guitar.

theres an extra layer of skin grow on my fingertips when i play guitar(and can saw some lines results form the strings, O.o)
, after stops awhile, the skin disappear , it'll be back once i play my guitar again

It is natural, it will grows back by itself just like wounds.

How bout electric bass guitar ?

Based on my experience, same result with guitar except you need more strength on the frets.

play 12 strings with hard gauge strings for ultimate callous growing experience. After that all string instruments will feel like nothing

But after that your fretting hand fingertips will be so insensitive to anything else.

former violinist here. guitar seems to be more harsh on the fingers as compared to violin.

logical but not true. Bass (electric bass at least) is a very finger abrasive instrument. And if you play fingerstyle instead of pick, then both hands will have callouses. After starting bass, i have had no problems playing guitars. Basically because of the higher string tension in basses. Even ultra light gauge is pretty hard to press.

Violin - thinner
Guitar - normal
Electric bass - thick

The difference between guitar and electric bass is almost the same. Electric bass need more strength and it plays a string or two at the same time unlike guitar where some chords have to use up all the 6 strings but less strength.

but if you are playing classical guitar (ie. nylon strings), you feel less pain as well compared to electric or acoustic..

Violin are easier. Pressing the fingerboard notes requires less strength compare with classical guitar.

Violinist cannot play chords on their violin.

After all, playing classical guitar advance arpeggios pieces such as Tarrega will makes you think that classical guitar is the most painful one.

True but when we wanted to continuing playing music, we will just let it be. Fact is I do not find any problems with it and I wonder will any girls care about fingertips roughness, more over I do not even care about that.
