nah.. Japan biggest will be Jpop/Jrock. And i dont think their metal scene is that big althought much more bigger compared to Malaysia or most parts of Asia. I couldnt get much of my favourite metal songs here. Or maybe its just that they have metal scenes but not as widespread as US/European because of the language barrier. Their power metal bands, trying to sing in english makes them suck. I prefer them to sing in Japanese. Still they have the Loud park event every year but most of the bands playing are foreign bands
Of course Japan's biggest music scene would be pop, that is de-facto everywhere. I doubt there is a country on Earth where Metal is the most popular music of the nation.

I'd still maintain that Japan has the biggest metal scene in Asia. I'm not just referring to amount of bands, but also the purchasing market. Whenever bands come to this side of the world, it is guaranteed that they'll play Japan (not just Tokyo either, multiple dates) because the market is there, people have the money and will turn up to the gigs. Japanese bands also get out and play Europe and Asia on a regular basis.

I agree with the comment about bands singing in English, kinda takes away from their 'voice'. Although there are some bands that do manage to keep an authenticity to them. There are some bands who can't hold a conversation in English, but will have songs sung in English, makes me wonder how the hell they wrote them.

Coming back to one of your earlier comments, do you really think that European/north American countries produce more bands because they are more well off financially?

I think you can say that Europe is where metal is most popular music. I cant think of much pop stuff from Europe. or maybe im not well exposed to Europe pop laugh.gif

Financially is a minor factor. Maybe a bigger factor is that the metal scene there is very big. Combining with their attitude and convenience of getting free cash without having to work, it kinda motivates them. You know something like they can get to do the things they love without having to think about working to support their living. ALso the tax there is very high which makes them lazy to work laugh.gif

Just my opinion/imagination.. Reality might be totally different tongue.gif

Haha, the reality is totally different (unfortunately sad.gif haha) The streets of Europe are not paved with gold like some seem to think. If I took you around some of the places I grew up, you'd think we were in Soviet Russia or something.

This 'free' cash you talk of is part of the welfare scheme and it is only given to the sick (who have to get a signed Doctors note every 6 months), disabled, elderly and those with children (up to the age of 16). This money is very little. No one who is healthy, sane, skilled, and ABLE to work would choose to live their life on it. If it were the case that people could just get good money for nothing, why would anyone ever choose to work? I know I wouldn't. And Europe would cease to exist.

Bands in Europe are just like anywhere else. People will work day jobs, go home and practice at night, maybe perform at the weekend. If they are lucky they will get signed and make a living off of touring and selling merch. No one is sitting around being supplemented by the government to enjoy their hobbies. That would be great, however it is not reality, we still have to worry about where the next meal is coming from.
In Europe it is possible to make a living from being a musician as there are established industries that you could get into if being in a band doesn't work out (you could be a teacher, make music for television, be a sound technician etc) in Asia, these industries are not established. So maybe that's why you see less people from this side of the world doing music.

The reason why there are more bands from Europe is because the metal scene is far more developed. It has a head start on the Asian scene by at least 20 years.

I've gone to festivals by myself, you'll end up hanging out with randoms. It adds to the adventure.

anyone know if Terror (hardcore/metal) are playing Kuala Lumpur? They're playing Bangkok and Singapore.

EDIT. No worries. Found out they're playing Number One Cafe, KL on the 13th March.

I'd argue that you could slot Agalloch into the post-black section. Tyr into Viking or Folk

Guys, where do you find out about shows? I'm not Malaysian so I'm not sure which avenues to explore. Seems I'm missing out on quite a few gigs.

I never knew Hate Eternal and DRI were playing here and only heard that Marky Ramone was playing because of a TV show a few nights before.

any online listings? thanks smile.gif

(anyone go to the Marky Ramone show? anyone have a rough idea of the setlist?)

I'm putting together a workout/gym playlist, here's some of the metal that made the list

Classic Swedish Death Metal, Dismember...

Ok, so this is post-rock and not technically metal but still relevant to this thread I think...(Epic crescendo begins around 2.15mins in)

I think this song is just amazing. It's on pretty much all of my playlists, including my 'relaxing' ones.

Ok, one more, don't wanna clog up the page...

Much more interested in Unearth, used to love them in the early 2000s but lost track of them. Not keen on Soulfly at all.

I got very excited for a split second because when I saw Massacre Conspiracy I thought it was Hope Conspiracy, oh well sad.gif
