hey guys, Q9300 reporting in with Asus P5Q3

i am really worried and not comfortable with the temperature sad.gif

see, without any load, it is already at 50'C

[attachmentid=761780]

and i tried increase FSB to 400MHz and run Prime95, see the temperature sad.gif

[attachmentid=761782]

i am using CM Hyper TX2 and had tried to re-install the hsf a few times. but thats the temp i get.
this is abnormal right?
*
87c... great temp... change ur tx2 to something else @@... i get that temp when at 3.8, damn takut de T_T

thermal spec of 71.4c means that's the limit of recommended temp that your processor should be running...

tjmax is to calculate whats your core temp.. they dont really show u the actual core temp, they just c how near is ur proc's temp to the tjmax, and thus calculate the core temp from there...

hopefully my explanation makes sense,, i know what it is but dont really know how to explain hahaha

intel's thermal monitor monitors ur proc's distance to tjmax, and will auto shut down when it reaches it... this is a safety feature to make sure ur proc does not get fried @@... mine kicked in when my core temp reading was -24 hahahaha... going up from 50 to 90+, then reaching 99, all of a sudden i get a -ve value, after 1 minute, auto shut down biggrin.gif

guys, do you think it's possible to overclock a Q9650 to 4 GHz with a low-end PSU like CM Extreme Power Plus 500W?
*
why not... provided you didnt install some graphic cards that require huge amount of power when stressing like gtx295, 4870x2, gtx280 n so on... i managed to oc my proc 4.3ghz with just a normal raidmax 500w psu as well biggrin.gif

insufficient vnb perhaps? biggrin.gif, see u got 4 dimms, adding up to ur gc, could be insufficient vnb

Will adding a GC actually cause the voltages to be unstable?Or in other words, do I need to tweak the voltages everytime I add/remove hardware?

I will try adjusting the NB voltage as you suggested.

usually no la biggrin.gif, but they're linked together ma, so thats jz my 2 cents biggrin.gif

Want to ask, is it safe to run my Q9550 at 3ghz with FSB 353mhz and ram memory at 847mhz while maintain PCIE at 100mhz

or should i detune my ram frequency to 706mhz at 2.00 multiplex?

if ur ram can tahan 847mhz y not smile.gif

Erm, unless you're using Nvidia chipset, else I think is not possible to unlink your RAM with FSB. In short, your RAM Clock is strapped to the FSB. You raised your FSB to overclock your CPU, hence RAM clock will be go either higher or lower depends on how you set your multiplier.

Your RAM probably won't screwed at 847Mhz, instead if your RAM can't tolerate the additional 47Mhz, it'll cause your system become unstable. For a simple and effective test, run memtest86 for at least two passes, and see if any errors, else it's good to go smile.gif

If errors detected, you can either put more juice to your RAM (of course you should know where the safe limit is), or lower the clock to 706Mhz and tighten your timings. Which to do is up to you.

What RAMs you got btw ?

well power consumption is not my main concern... but the heat it produces for the speed i want, i remember when im still on q6600, my room is hotter than any other rooms in my house biggrin.gif... now at least its back to normal ahahahaha... wat price r u looking for? tongue.gif

bro... vFSB isnt the same as vNB... your mobo doesnt have vNB/vMCH adjustment....

what the hell is vFSB???? i have never heard of it @@ i only know vnb = vmch, vtt = termination voltage, pll, vcore, vdimm... vfsb = pll ka?

if u google abit... vFSB refers to VTT or FSB termination voltage...
@8tvt
lack of vNB/vMCH adjustment option...that's why your mobo is limited to 400MHz FSB... and no wonder your mobo can't reach high FSB...
the reason why u can reach 400MHz is your mobo officially support 400Mhz FSB...
i have a friend using ga-p31ds3 mobo... P31 chip... it has vMCH adjust... i overclocked it.. reached 480MHz easy...
*
OHHHHHH... now i get it biggrin.gif...

@8tvt, like wat campsol2k said, without vnb, it'll be a lil hard to reach high fsb... btw for quaddie, reaching high fsb is also a challenge, since u need to make sure all of the cores are stable at such fsb... dats y u rarely see quaddies doing high fsb, and most records of fsb reached is done with dual cores with high multi biggrin.gif

yup... thats normally ppl easily reach at 450FSB.... the problem is clocking the quad more than 450Mhz FSB is a challenge... despite low multiplier.
higher voltages, adequate cooling n numerous tweaks are needed to reach 500MHz FSB.
I'm not saying it will rock stable at 500MHz FSB... in my case.. not stable... pass few LinX run only...
*
for my case 500fsb is not really a challenge, if its 500fsb alone... trying 500fsb on max multi, for my case is 9, is a damn big challenge... just getting me 500x9 took me massive tweakings, and i was able to pass only several super pi benchmarks before getting bsod... but 500x6, 500x7, 500x8 is not really hard for me biggrin.gif... max fsb i've reached is 514fsb, either its my mobo fsb wall, or my proc fsb wall... need a dual core to find out @@
