What AVR are you using now?

As you get better speakers, quality of the amplification is important to bring out the best in the speaker. The high freq harshness you perceived could be from lack of juice or maybe the amp SQ is a bit harsh.
*
I'm using a NAD T775. I think should be enough to drive the Syncs as the harshness was from auditioning other AVRs, none from the NAD. To me the NAD sounds warm and smooth. The synergy with the Syncs and budget considerations was why I went for the NAD compared to a Japanese AVR or separates. Further, I don't listen loud, only from -28dbs to -15dbs. Not many ppl use the NAD, so might as well tumpang this thread to post some pics of the NAD.

Bro you using separates right? The syncs sound better with a more power amp?

I am using the same cable. That's why i can easily recognize it.
By the way, you have a nice system.
*
Thanks for your kind comments. Are you using in HT or Hifi setup? IMHO, overall they sound good but probably a bit laid back in my limited hifi playback. Any thoughts?

QUOTE(jchong @ Feb 20 2012, 12:40 PM)
NAD is a well regarded brand. So long as you like the pairing with your speakers then it's good.

Doesn't mean more power is better. Also depends on the characteristic of your amp.
*
Yeah, you right. I took some pains to ensure that I auditioned the Syncs together with the NAD and other AVRs and the Supra cables to get as close as possible to a full addition. Eventually took up the best sounding combo I heard and could afford.

Bro you mentioned the ports at the back of the Sync, how is ur arrangement? I plug the bottom port of the towers hoping to have a bit more control on the midbass. Haven't really tried plugging another port or more than one port. I also plug the only port in the 2C.

I plugged the middle port. You can try plugging the others to see which suits your room best.

Thanks. I couldn't find the individual crossovers of each driver online as was thinking to plug the lowest reaching driver, which should be the bottom port.

Wah Wkang bro, your setup looks very nice la  rclxms.gif

Guys, I am interested to upgrade beginner mix and match home theater set. Been looking for speaker brands which suit my peasant budgets and PSB looks nice.

Say, any mid level speakers from PSB (i think WKang bro's syncrony i sure cannot afford one) which I could consider? Who are the distributor for PSB and who can I contact for audition leh?
*
Thanks for your kind comments. The Image series are good value for money. If you like the PSB sound and budget permits, you can audition the Imagine Series to decide whether it is worth your extra moolah. I got my setup from A&L audio Bangsar but I'm sure you can audition PSBs at any A&L Branch (location from their website). Let your ears and wallet decide and shop around if you have time, that part of the fun of this hobby.

Thanks Boss Seong for the useful info. notworthy.gif If I understand correctly, probably need to block all ports for any effect on lower-mid bass. Would you have Sync plugs for sale? biggrin.gif

Btw, when will the Imagine T2 be available locally? The Syncs utilise the crossovers and subenclosures the same way as the new Imagine T2. Would be interesting to do a A/B versus the Sync 2T at your place? smile.gif

OT, not many in-ceiling/in wall pics shared on the HT forum but was mentioned in another thread, so here are mine. Nice job done by A&L.

Hi guy,

Need advice how to clean the dust that is stick to my PSB image B25 speaker cone which u can refer to the picture and any effect if i dont clean dust that is stick to my speaker cone?

Thanks
*
Not sure if this is the right way, but I use a vacuum cleaner fitted with a soft bristle head (kinda like a broom) to clean the dust on the drivers and bullet shaped excursion. As the suction power is not very strong, i just run the bristles softly on the driver surface.

Another way I use on really tough dust is to use a microfiber brush. I use the bristles to wipe off the tought dust directly, especially similar to your pic where the driver meets the excursion. You can get microfiber brushes real cheap at DIY stores, around MYR5 at HomeFix.

it cant damaged the speaker cone right.

Thanks

The cone should be all right as long you don't directly place the vacuum cleaner on the cone and pull it out. Using dry wiping method should be fine I guess. I think should also be careful not to poke the rubber gaskets on the side of the cone.

PSB Imagine Minis

Have not seen/heard them in person before but considering for desktop/pc setup with my old yamaha 665. Prolly need a small subseries 1 for lfe. Any other suggestions? KEF3005.1 and B&W Mini Theatre, but both quite expensive in comparison I guess.

Good deal, but still want to do an A/B between the imagine minis and image bookshelves. Besides, prefer the smaller and cooler outlook of the minis tongue.gif

Boss Seong managed to get 2 more plugs for me to plug the top port of my Sync 1 Towers. That tightened up the bass response based on current room interaction, hence I'm able to drive the overall volume up with less reflection.

Other Sync owners had experience blocking the rear ports? In stereophile's review that the reviewer also blocked bottom port only but prob will vary from person due to individual room interaction.

Awesome stuff now with clear midrange and better than expected LFE considering my setup from the simple tweak. Kudos to PSB for a nice design cue and boss seong for sourcing the plugs!

So now you've blocked the top and bottom ports?

I've blocked the middle ports, which reduces the boominess and cleans up the bass.
*
Yes, blocked top and bottom ports. Thanks for the info, I'll try your setup as well cos I have a reference point now.

I think which setup to choose mostly relates to each room interaction with the Syncs. In my case, I have a low ceiling and also not much absorption nearer the ceiling. Hence maybe thats why blocking the top and bottom port had more impact to me compared to mid and bottom which I tried as well.

However, I did lose some SPL from the Syncs and will need to rerun audyssey soon to level match the speakers again. Did you run audyssey before/after blocking the mid port?

Am currently on Image B6 front, Alpha C5 centre and Klipsch sub, hooked up to a basic entry Yamaha RX-V465 AV receiver.

What would be a good upgrade for receiver? Was thinking of getting a used unit that was mid-high range, with HDMI.

Saw a Denon 3310 (when new was RM4k) now going for RM2k+, but output is 165W and Image B6 output only 150W. Will it be damaging?

And saw a Yamaha RX-V1800 about RM2k+ also, 130W output.

Was recommended a NAD T748, but looks underpowered.

Budget about RM2k. Would appreciate some options from friends here...
*
I believe the Denon 3310 output is max output for a single channel. I don't think that figure will damage the speakers unless you run a source that demands sustained signal for that channel and played at high volumes.

Instead of a 2nd hand Yamaha RX-V1800, why not consider a new Yamaha A820 which is slightly above 3k? I believe the A820 and RXV1800 are pretty much the same level.

Regards to the NAD, NAD discloses its power ratings at full disclosure power, means all channels driven you still get 40W for all 7 channels. That should be more power than offered by similarly priced products from other brands which disclose max output for 1 channel driven.

I've heard both the A820 and T748 with the newer Image Series, IMHO both sound different but good to me. Again best to audition at outlets which preferably provide you an A/B test for whichever products you are planning to buy.

tbcheese, I didn't get the Image center speaker but instead its an Alpha centre (that time budget not enough). Actually its C1, not C5. Typo.
Needed the upgrade coz I felt the RX-V465 isn't driving the Image speakers enough. Meaning not enough power. Unfortunately can't advise the sound because its my 1st unit and no prior setup experience.

wkang, was thinking about the A820 Aventage but budget about RM2k+ for used 3-4 years unit. Thus V1800 looked like a good deal.
So what did you think about the difference in sound, space, depth when running from Yamaha A820 and NAD T748? Have not auditioned either but would like to hear some comments.
*
Actually the A820 can be bought for very slightly above 3k (no price talk rules). Personally I think the A820 is good buy, well its slightly above your budget, but since you like the yamaha sound, A820 has improved YPAO and jam packed with the latest features like Airplay. Btw, I think the T748 is above your budget.

I'm no golden ears and I honestly I didn't demo/try A/B between the A820 and T748. However, IMHO, yammys sound brighter than NADs, hence you should hear more details (some say bright) compared to a warm (some say lazy) sound of the NADs. In terms of soundstage and depth, I've only heard a difference only when auditioning different speakers and not really so much due to the receiver.

I guess a lot depends on the size of your listening area and also the volumes you listen at. At low volumes and small space, receivers wont really make much of a difference. Better for you to A/B audition both of the receivers at a vendor before purchase.

Yes, I agree ... it is just that the last 6 to 8 posts were discussing the amplifiers driving the PSBs, and the A820 and T748 was brought up in the last 4 to 5 posts.  In any case, I will open up a new thread if needed to avoid buts and lies.

I completed an audition with respect to the T748 and the A1020 ... the A820 had been sold, and was no longer available, so I chose to audition against the A1020, as a frame of reference.

Since this is a PSB speaker thread, the front speakers used were Image T6s, and Image B6s for the rear, center was also a PSB, but not Image series, and really looks high end, not sure if it was the Synchrony.  Subwoofer was a PSB SubSeries 300.

Overall, the T748's sound has more weight, and actually sounds louder than the A1020.  The sound was "warmer", and had more punch.

The good thing about the A1020 was the very good surround steering, the way the A1020 steered the sound effects from one corner to the diagonally opposite corner was really good, but the sound was a bit thin, and not as exciting as the T748.  For watching movies, I prefer a more dynamic sound.

The fact that the A1020 was about 1.5x more expensive than the T748, and the fact that I did not need the features present in the A1020, resulted in me putting my money down for the T748.  I have a HTPC, which takes care of all the "smart" stuff.

I heard the A820 is sometimes selected over the T748 due to connectivity to the internet and Apple devices.

I listened to stereo on the T748, and the sound is good, but not as good as dedicated hi-fi (would not expect it to, or maybe it was the fact that a BluRay player was used as source).
*
Thanks for the detailed update. Did you pull the trigger on the 748 or looking to find a 820 to audition?
