Must read about Wing Chun:

The 8 most dangerous mistakes of Wing Chun systems (Text Sifu K.Brand - GM IAW)

Basic facts:

If people need to mix few martial arts to get something "useable", it simply means that each of those martial arts are somehow incomplete.
(or the style is incomplete, or teachers are incompetent). As simple as these.

Regarding Wing Chun, in many case, it is the system itself that is corrupted (which is the worst case, because the more you train the wrong way, the worse you become, unable to defend yourself)

I started to learn some wing chun more than 13 years ago in Europe. I can guaranty you that majority of the so-called traditional wing chuns are among the weakest style of martial art.

A good advise:

Before you waste your time, be sure about what you are really looking for. Your target.

If Self-Defence is the only thing you want to develop, consider the International Academy of WingChun.
I do not call it a "family" (we are not orphans ;-) but a professional Academy, with high quality and qualified Instructors. (we are friendly, indeed)

Most important, IAW means, learning a realistic System of Self-Defence. 100% - pseudo-scientific theories - FREE.

WingChun Principles are logic and truly scientific. And yes, we train hard. There is no secret!

If someone need to mix few martial arts to get something usable for self-defence, it simply means that each of those martial arts are somehow incomplete; or the martial art style is deficient (lost its spirit), or teachers are incompetent. (one generates the other)

The truth is, MMA was created for the "showbiz" (competition/Tv-Channel) and has never been designed for Self-Defence. It has rules and regulations.

A MMA/UFC event has to last long enough for the People to enjoy it (Sponsors would never accept to cover a 3 seconds fight)

"Can you imagine a Samurai Competition?" No, of course not. The idea is absurd.

So, MMA is no Martial Art, but a mix of fighting techniques suitable for the show. It is opposed to martial spirit.

If your aim is to do fitness, practise some fragments of martial arts techniques, or play-play with friends and join some competitions (wear gloves and shine on the ring) go for MMA, if you are good at it, you can make few bucks (I mean, brake your teeth to buy... a Kancil). It's trendy and purely designed for show business (mma/combat sports belong to show-business)

If you are looking for One complete ( & functional) Self-Defence system Check> IAW-system (the Art of WingChun)

Hi
to be honest , I am not seeking for a MMA school , because I am trying to complete my martial art techniques by learning different styles
I have 10 years experience in TKD (GTF) , it is not like they don't teach us hand techniques or grappling , but they seldom apply it in sparring
We have a lots of patterns and most of the moves are performed using our hands , while kicks are trained by shadow boxing + sparring
When I am sparring with my mates, there's no chance for me to apply hand techniques because it is almost impossible to reach the distance where a punch can be executed
Thats why I am looking for some martial arts that accentuate on grappling / throwing / punching , to make my training more complete

For your information,

WingChun has /kicks/ they are specific techniques; rarely required for basic self-defence. Some of my students are coming from TKD. After the first class, they realized that kicks are not suitable for self-defence. They also grasped the radical difference between /combat sports/ and /Self-defence Discipline/.
During our trainings, we always assume that an opponent is a serious threat (non sporty). It is a totally different "World". For that reason, we do not spare.

TKD is taught as a Sport. You are basically trying to mix different combat sports elements to obtain a "mix of combat sports".

-"I am trying to complete my martial art techniques by learning different styles(?)"

>You recognize that your 10 years of TKD isn't enough (complete), and finally, you need to learn some other things to "feel confident" (able to defend yourself) Technically, what you learnt in TKD is is no more a Martial Art (traditional). It has totally switched to competitions (and merchandising).

Did you ever train without protections? I doubt. But you had to invest in equipments/protections/belts...

It is very simple> You must choose your definition of /Combat/:

If you like it "sporty" you should go for MMA. (a sport)

They will provide you exactly what you are looking for (a mix of combat-sport's training)

If your aim for a 100% Self-defence style, you are welcome to join one of the IAW Academies/Groups.
Learning the Art of Self-Defence is something special. If you have time, join a trial class. You are welcome.
Address and Schedules are available on my website:

International Academy of WingChun (Malaysia) Official Website

I am looking for self-defense classes around alor setar/sungai petani area.

for your information, i own a black belt in Taekwondo(ITF), i have been taught by my former tkd instructor about some grappling n take down techniques as he is a former policeman. I am looking for an instructor who teaches close-quarter combat techniques some sort like what will be taught in police school.

I'm a uni student, until now i still dont have the intention to join the police force. smile.gif smile.gif

Yes, i need to know where are u located now as easy for me to suggest which dojo u can join ..
But, i truly suggest, if u looking for self defence, please consider other discipline such as aikido or muay because karate is life time training .. u need to dedicate yourself to learn the essence of karate itself.
My dojo only teach you all the basic until you reach at least Shodan (1st time black belt), then you will join the sempai to learn karate ..
This is only my opinion ..
