Hi..its interesting to hear so much about t-amp here. I've a brief introduction by YC with his 2nd t-amp, Sansui CDP and Q-Acoustic speaker. It was superb considering the size and the cost of this lil amp. Anyway, I have order my t-amp from xtorm and would appreciate if you guys could help give some suggestion(s) to mod this lil fella. For me, vocals is much important and therefore after the tt session, anyone can let me know which is the best component/part to mod to achieve the best vocal sounding t-amp? since this thread is too long for me to check, has anyone tried using linear PSU instead of SMPS?

Welcome to the club, cyl1000!
The general concensus is that the stock input caps should be replaced.
If you're into vocals, a Vishay/ERO 2.2uF poly would be excellent! What set of speakers would you be using btw? Get a good bookshelve speakers for this. We've seen this being demonstrated by March's HB2.
Replacement of the SMDs are also recommended.. see/download pdf guide at beginning of this thread.

I was initially running the T-Amp with a linear PSU. My review/findings at earlier pages.. In a nutshell, with linear PSU, the low end definition is excellent. But the SMPS really matches the T-Amp for overall performance in terms of control and dynamics.. more biased towards midranges and an increase in the operating voltage from 12VDC to 13.6VDC which I am running, improves the bass quite a bit, in terms of refined definition, very subtle but definitive. Again this is more to personal preferences, either way, the T-Amp is still a great performer!

Anyone else wanna add? wink.gif

For speakers, I've just "adopted" the Epos M5 from YC (hence the brief intro to t-amp) and also a Polk Audio floorstander.

Earlier. there were some discussion bout adding an active preamp for this lil fella...particularly tube based...hmm...is this recommended? remember DIY a tube preamp long time ago and the unit must still be in the store room somewhere...what you guys say...t-amp with "tube" sound or bare naked t-amp sound?

Another thing got me curious. There are some capacitors that you guys mentioned here are not available from Farnell/RS. I know a DIY shop in PJ sell BGs, M-Cap..where else did you guys find them?

Wow, the reports with pictures of this afternoon’s t/t session sure come in fast this time around. And it looks like I have missed out a lot.

Cyl1000, welcome aboard.
Did I show you my T-amp at my house? If it is with the attenuator and Vishay/ERO MKT1813 as input caps and without casing, then it must be my 1st T-amp (exactly same configuration as Lai’s unit). My 2nd T-amp with the squarish Vishay MKT1822 as input caps was only completed last Wednesday. I have built it for our first t/t session last Saturday.

I think the attenuator is your passive preamp..right??? Well, thanks for showing me your lovely t-amp..actually i've wanted to attend saturday tt but was tied up with work. maybe in the next session. i'll be waiting for my t-amp to arrive and will definately test out its performance with my setup at home...

btw..yet to get a proper stand for M5. heard that can get customised from a shop in amcorp mall..

Most of us here try to keep our T-amps simple and costs low (with the hope of getting the biggest bang for every Ringgit spent into them), hence we have literally shunned the shop in PJ that you mentioned.

I am not going the pre and power route with my T-amps, hence the attenuator would be part of my 1st T-amp as integrated amp in the Rosewood jewellery casing.

As for speaker stands for m5, do try out The Hifi Shop in 1-U as they are also selling them; I am afraid custom made ones would be expensive. Do look into the used market as well.

So apart from JP, where can I find these quality components? Some of the caps mentioned is not available from Farnell/RS. I'm still figuring out to use linear or switch mode power supply...will linear sounded better???

Anyway, i'm waiting good news from xtorm for the new batch of t-amp smile.gif

dobias, nice advice from YC smile.gif if your are looking for plug and play the trend is ideal smile.gif, but i believe if you are a tweeker like most of us, then the bare board is the way to go wink.gif

Hi Y.C.,

You have recommended to use Vishay caps for the T-Amp. Since I just got mine yesterday and haven't got the time to check the capacitor values, can you let me know the the two capacitor value you have changed?? Thanks.

Guys,
For those who are seeking better-quality volume pots than JP's Alpha for their T-amps, please be informed that LittleGhost is organising a bulk order from hohodiy website. The ALPs VR50K Blue velvet costs between RM27 - RM33.75 or NT$225 and ALPS RK09 at RM6.50 - RM8.00 or NT$54 each. (NT$1 = RM0.12 / RM0.15)

You must remember to deposit cash or utilise Maybank2u.com to transfer funds into the bank account specified. Please pay the estimated costs you are ordering without the shipping & handling charges no later than midnight today.

Y.C., thanks for the reminder. Have just placed order for the pots with LittleGhost rclxms.gif

I’d say this thread is very alive.

A quick update from my end here: Since I have 2 T-amps but only 1 computer-notebook-style SMPS, I need to get another and had originally wanted to spend RM33 for a similar unit. However, Lai convinced and bought for me a Meanwell S-50-12 SMPS instead. The difference in sonic quality is very substantial and the additional RM22 spent is well-worth it.

Coincidentally, size (width and depth) of the Meanwell SMPS is identical to casing of my 1st T-amp and looks very much the PSU specially made for my T-amp.

A pix:

I'm using a 5Amp SMPS adaptor. Since it is still a stocked t-amp, can't comment much. For those using caged type SMPS, please be extra careful to avoid eletric shock smile.gif

Hi, I have bought 3 Alpha pots from JP but sad to say the QC is very bad. I got 1 faulty and 1 more with some cracking sound when adjusting the volume. I have a Alps RK27 in my other amp and its been working without any problem for the past 10 years.

Anyway, I have just assembled my t-amp and tested it withboth floorstander and bookshelf speaker. It can sure drives these speakers without much problem. I pit it against PM4001, except for the bass, overall the t-amp sound better with more details and livelier. This is even before the t-amp and the Vishay/Panasonic cap being run in...

Bro Jazzy, if you don't mind, where did you get your classy aluminum casing for your t-amp?Jazzy T-Amp Casing

cyl1000,
Some of the JP stuffs you can never know when it's gonna failed on you. Due to the 'cheapness' I normally bought extra 1-2 depending on the parts. For spare just in case! tongue.gif So it would be worthwhile then to fork out acquiring the real stuffs eventhough the price is 10X JP prices.. peace of mind for the next 10 years(?).. biggrin.gif

Bro, the super duper casing was bought by a friend in Bangkok and hand carried back to KL. Price? RM300. Don't ask me where he got it, as I have forgotten the place/website. I will try to find out though..
*
mad.gif I'm starting to get used to JP quality. Today I was soldering a toggle switch and the terminal came off even when I solder for less than 2sec! It is so much different when I shop for components there during my college time..

I saw a casing at Nixie...smaller than yours but I guess it should make to look like a decent amp for me to put in the living room smile.gif

hi all, may i know what cables you use for the tamp internal cables?  that connect to volume pot, RCA jacks etc...?

DIY braided CAT5 or just any generic cable as long as it thick enough?

thanks
*
In my CDP, I use silver cable for signal tongue.gif Anyway in t-amp, small signal, I use screen cable. speaker and power cable will be 26AWG. IMO, keep the signal cable as short as possible.
