I thought of going out with her on v day.  She has indirectly hinted about candle light dinner & I'm looking for options around pj/subang area. It does not need to be too expensive at this stage of r/ship.

How "not too expensive" are you looking at? Valentine's Day is the worst possible day to try to save money. Almost every "romantic" restaurant will be serving some variation of a V-Day dinner that costs double what a normal dinner would cost.

any recommended nice & quiet fine dining for lunch or dinner in KL? preferably with piano,  instrument band or nice instrument music playing in the background instead of pop musics.

It's been a long time since I last went, but Villa Danieli in Sheraton Imperial got a nice 3-piece "lounge music" (dunno how to explain lol) style band at nights, no idea about lunchtime, though.

Expensive, though sad.gif ... rm300/pax for the kaiseki can already compare to Takashi Kimura's degustation at Cilantro ... hmm.gif

I'm going UK for holiday/brother's wedding in Sept so I was just checking out some of the celebrity restaurants over there, and was amazed at just how cheap some of them are.

Example Gordon Ramsay's 3-star restaurant has a gbp45 3-course set lunch; his 2-star place has a gbp30 3-course set lunch. if you don't convert (earn gbp spend gbp kind of thing), this is so damn cheap! Over here you want anything comparable, it'll be like 2-3 times the price rclxub.gif

You are not comparing apples to apples.
If you eat in a decent Indian restaurant in the UK, it costs twice as much than here too. Try eating in Gordom Ramsay's for dinner.  Lunch is obviously cheaper as people in Europe generally have light lunches (sandwiches / salad / soup meals).
Additionally, it is obvious that western/continental cuisine in western/continental Europe will cost cheaper than in Asia.  This is due to prices of ingredients which can be sourced locally/regionally.

Explain it how you like, the fact remains that a UK fresh grad would need to pay "just" gbp 30/45 to sample 2/3mich star food, as compared to a Malaysia Fresh Grad who pays rm150 at Cilantro, or rm100 at Sage.

[edit] moving up the scale to the big $$ items, it's no different. dinner at gordon's 3-star joint is gbp125 for 7-course dinner, gbp155 for degustation. Cilantro, which probably wouldn't even get 3 stars, is rm260++ for 4 courses, rm320++ for degustation.

The fact also remains, that one can also sample award winning fine dining local / regional food at RM 30- RM 45 per person for lunch in KL. =)

where?

[edit] don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to argue or be hostile or whatever. neither am i saying omg malaysia no michelin stars so food is lousy; on the contrary there's tons of food that's awesome but which the gwailos would be all like "dafuq, this table is so dirty and i'm sitting next to a drain." But with respect to "fine dining" ... rm 30-rm50? is that really possible?

My point is, there is no such thing as as "5 star restaurant" or a "6 star restaurant." There is no "food authority" that reviews restaurants and gives them a "star" rating. Nor is there any 'generally accepted' criteria as to how a restaurant would qualify for X number of stars.

Find MIGF menu is a rip off, better to save for lunch or dinner at the Quay.

In Australia woh hmm.gif ...

Going to UK & Paris next week for brother's wedding, made a few reservations at 2- and 3-starred (lunch lol, dinner too expensive) joints there. Gonna see how they compare to our Cilantro and Sage icon_idea.gif ... considered doing the Tastings menu at The Fat Duck but gbp200+ a little steep plus they are fully booked for months anyway.

If you can't book The Fat Duck, 'Dinner by Heston Blumenthal' at Mandarin Oriental is an alternative else there is always 'Hinds Head'. Several of Gordon Ramsay restaurants lunch menu is value for money.

Thanks, made a booking for Dinner. I'd already made a booking earlier for Gordon's 2-star place Petrus ... set lunch is gbp30 so that's pretty cheap smile.gif couldn't get his flagship RGR cos already fully booked for the days I'll be in London sad.gif

dance as in slow dance where you dine and dance together

99% you will be the only couple dancing. You might be ON but is your partner also ON? Hehe. Anyway the last time I went to Vila Danieli (sheraton imperial) I remember in front of the bar area there is a small area that could be used as a dance floor, there was a 3 or 4 piece band playing lounge/slow music. Food is also decent, ambience is very nice. But this was like 3 years ago so I dunno whether anything's changed since then.

Anyone who been to Sage at the Garden, how's the food and dining experience in there, is it worth the visit?
*
my last visit there was like 4 years ago so it might not be relevant now, but for KL standards pretty good. Food was nice, environment quite nice, but like all KL restaurants service isn't up to par with fine dining places elsewhere
