I feel that this thread is not constructive.

People posting here mostly brag about their own schools and refuse to accept other schools being better or worse.
If that's so, what's the points doing it if the thread is flooded by a lot of 1-2 line posts.

Plus, I doubt if anyone would take this thread as a reference in selecting secondary school.

I'm behind wenchean all the way!

Most of the time people will just give a passing mention of MBSSKL ... Many people don't even know where is the building located. Neither do they know much about the school. So it has maintained a reputation as a "dark horse" or "hidden jewel".

Yes, I am saying this because I come from MBS. And I can say that if you're of the right character and mindset, your education in MBS will bring you far in life, no regrets.

It doesnt matter much where you study. Just put in your best effort, and Im sure you can excel regardless of which school you study. Make the best of what you've got.

Even the best student in public exams not necessarily come from the so-called "best school".

By looking at the results of PMR and SPM, Catholic High School PJ is da the best.

PMR 2009 - 220+ got 8As

this school also have very high curricular level with 65 clubs inside the school.

You're always a level higher then other school if you study in this school.

Well the best answer always derived from teachers or when attending seminars with inter-schools participation. I still remember when I went into a camp at Pahang Jungle for leadership training, few of the facilitators personally known some famous KL school teachers by name.

This is widely accepted (grudgingly too) as the best :
1) Best overall school in MYS : Alam Shah (residential). Considered top & i think no one can compete this fact. Name itself is self explanatory.

2) Best academic school : Amminuddin Baki. Teachers there really know how to grind students for perfection academicly. Just asked those who went for Yayasan Titiwangsa Anugerah Cemerlang. Of all the schools participating, SAB always take at least half of the honours. Sports so & so only.

3) Best sports school (apart from Bukit Jalil) : Victoria Institution. Almost dominate anything to do with sports in KL. Got large & beautiful compund too. Not to mention all the famous public figures coming out of there. Academic is very good too but slightly less compared SAB, VI prefers student who excels in sports & studies. No girls though until form 6.

There are of course many others but very few can deny this 3 school the right to "good school". They are "control school" or sekolah kawalan which means only straight A's can gain admittance. For UPSR, 5A, PMR > 7A. Any school in KL for UPSR, they will have a form for straight A scorer for their top choice. SAB & VI will always be at the top. They also belong to cluster schools (first batch).

Although I agree school itself is not everything as in the end it is you who will decide your own fate.

Waa...
I'm from WMS...
I think that our school is pretty okay lar...
In coco and in normal curriculum..

This year i think 70% of the F4's got 7A's and above in last years PMR and we're also in the top 10 list for percentage of SPM top scorers.

But they also kill us when it comes to exams la...
In internal exams sometimes got 50% of the class fail.... ENGLISH... yeat we can get 100% record for distinctions in SPM/ PMR...

ICAS see first la... this year first batch mar..

mind you..tat the excellent teachers there..all teach at putrajaya now..not in Bandar Tun Razak

and from newly added 'UJIAN APTITUD = IQ TEST' in recent UPSR exam
neway..a great school indeed with some geniuses in it
my fren got 100% in add math n tats in time when the book is like dictionary (not like todays add math = easier) tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

Best Private School
1. Garden International School
2. Alice Smith

Best Public School
1. Chong Kwok (If your kid is good enough, there's an afternoon session where they teach Singaporean syallubus in English)

Avoid Garden International School. The standard has dropped alot but the fees increase like never before. Alice Smith is the best if you want international school.

WesleyMethodist is the best private school. No other schools require you to take an entrance exam with their own standard(UPSR results is not taken into account). Only 180 students are taken in every year. Last year there were about 800 participants. You can rest assured that the students are top-notch.

Can a public school actually choose their prospective students??? Sounds crazy to me...

As for the school that actually chosses their students, why bother mention it here since not many ppl got in or even know the way to get in (you know what i mean). SAB has been very quite nowadays, the last time i heard them is all students got straight As in their PMR or SPM.

As for for the so called "famous school", their exam paper will be marked at the strictest level one can get from the marker. This is proven by a few of my friends' parents who are marker... They kind of get special treatment, so you make the call, study at a mediocre school or a "famous school". In the end, your result will be around the same, just your knowledge got difference. 1 more thing, if your school is dominated by chinese or indians, please dont put your hopes up to much for Matrix or IPTA(Hot courses).

Those old days, pre Hishamuddin tenure as Education Minister, the medias like TV & newspaper put heavy interest on the best schools like top 10 or something like that. So those great schools will get all the media exposure like the 3 I mentioned in KL. When I took my PRM results, TV3 reporters are there & Star & Berita harian's too. However (a senior teacher told me) that some parents are dissatisfired with all this hype & the govt dont really wants to promote schools like that (others may appear inferior or sort) so he starts promoting individual success rather than schools.
Then slowly back again after picking less popularity (with crying & screaming pictures all around) & introduce those cluster schools. Not surprising Alam Shah is No1 & others in top 10.

These are elite control schools, do not get straight A's + representing school in something, dont even bother of applying. Even those that did scored straight A's they still cannot get in (huge competition from everyone else). These schools take all the best students from all the primary schools & gather them in one place. Imagine the pressure, some can cope while others struggle badly. Even the worst student in entire school gets at least 5A in SPM.

There is actually no "official" ranking but there is an internal ranking but you must be really lucky to even glimpse it. When / If you participated in any inter-school event, just asked briefly around which is the best school, more or less you get the same response.

To answer your question, its quite simple. The strongest in the room is always the most silent one (why bother to tell when everybody already or should knows). Do you see McDonald or Starbucks advertisement anymore when they are already the world leader in their respective industry ?

I agree. The achievements of a student is not dependent on the school in which he/she studies - it depends on whether the student is willing to put time, effort and initiative in excelling.

I have had friends who transfer to so-called more "prestigious" schools with "better" facilities and teachers after failing to excel in their PMR exams, as they and their parents believe a better school=better education.. a couple of years later, in Form 5, their results remain mediocre at best - this time though, the parents blame it on the influence of friends. In the end, everyone except the student himself is to blame.

Knowing people from both well-known schools and also schools infamous for their disciplinary problems, I am confident in saying that there are cases where teachers in the latter are more experienced, and are even sought after for tuition by students from the renowned school.

Overall, there is no such thing as "the best secondary school". Yes, there are schools with the "best" facilities, but as schools are essentially institutes of education, the primary purpose of students attending a school is to gain education. In our country, our "education" comes from the same syllabus in the same textbooks - it all depends on whether the student is actually going to take the time to sit down and study smart.

Yes, there are schools famous for their many straight As scoring students - but don't forget, top students and their parents tend to obsess about getting into the "best" school. If all the academically-blessed students congregate in ONE school simply because of the name, wouldn't you think that this would naturally cause the school's academic achievements to improve? If you were an average student, I'm sorry to say that if you attend a "prestigious" school in hopes that the teachers will magically impart everything you need to know to you, without much effort on your part, you'll remain an average student - not one of the straight As scoring ones.

tl;dr: There is no such thing as a "best" school. It's up to the student to work hard, play hard, and make his/her secondary years memorable.

I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion.
I remember a saying of "It does not matter where you come from, but where you can go".
In these schools (from memory) most don't require motivation to study, they can do it on their own.
Most students are very independent & highly disciplined which requires less supervision & effort from teachers (even an average one will do).
Its like basic fundamentals of management, you don't need to super manager to supervise super employees (a bad one can also make the cut).
"There is always someone better than you" : this is what normally students believe in my old school.

We even have a ranking system to gauge the student's performance. Your position overall, pointers, grades are all displayed at the white board. Suffice to say some downright hated these, but others may like it. Contrary to popular belief, most control schools have mediocre facilities because the schools itself are really old. VI is more than 50 years old. SAB & AS are slightly less. I sat on a broken wooden chair for whole year & a dysfunctional fan for 6 months. What do you expect from a govt school ?

Now everyone can practically cheat to score in SPM. Copy & paste is the oldest form of cheating albeit that if you are doing it right you will be fine.
