The problem with my logic is that I dont have sufficient data to use as an example. And i dont know which of the plans Maxis would use, or even if they would stick to the current plans. If you check all the other countries launches, they've built specific plans for the iPhone, which more often than not, is more than any of their currently most expensive plans. If that is the case, talk time cost for a 24 months contract would be RM12,000! rclxub.gif

Maxis have to somehow revamp the current tiered plans to reflect and achieve parity with other country rates and costs. Basically, this is an uncharted territory since we dont ever have a contracted period while with a telco around here. In other words, I dont even know where to start from here!

You guys take a gander, I dont know where to begin.

Hmmmm RM4,000 to RM4,600. That would put it roughly in line with the other worldwide plans. That would mean that if talk or SMS quota exceeds the limit, you'd be charge extra, right?

The only thing we need here is the word from the horse's mouth. tongue.gif

If there are any news source that can be trusted, it is from Apple themselves. Once you see it plastered across Apple.com, then that is the truth and not naysay, hearsay, or speculation. I can say I call DiGi and say their rep say they're getting it, who's to say I'm right or wrong?

The level of hopefulness here have cross the boundary of being realistic to being "I refuse your reality and subsitute it with my own". It will be Apple themselves announcing the next batch of countries approved for launch, not DiGi, Celcom or Maxis. That Maxis rep probably got tired of answering the same question since that news "speculation" (I wont call it article since there is ZERO credible source in that article), and just say yes to appease the "overhopefuls".

I say again, and I said this since the iPhone 2G already, I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong on this. No need clamoring for iPhones in foreign land and calling stores in the middle of the night. Stop the speculating!

Which is the case of my younger brother. The very moment Maxis does verify the authenticity of that 3G iPhone rumor-mongering thing, he'll be the very first to know.

Good news if true. Heard nothing from my own brother's side, who is fairly in-the-know himself when it comes to this. He's technologically inclined as his older brother himself tongue.gif, so once the internal memo breaks, he's be breaking it to me and his close friends.

I'd love me some local warrantied iPhones, even if I have to sign my life off for it.

Chances of Apple caring how Maxis Data plans are is next to zero. We dont even have an actual Apple presence in Malaysia, only resellers. They probably dont even know or care about what's happening in these parts of the world.

If that is the case, I hope Maxis(or whoever snagged this) can follow Australia's move on bringing out those with "parallel imported" iPhones to sign up with their plans at much discounted rates, while still using their own BYO iPhones. Penalising early adopters ,especially those who would be major contributors and users of your offered bandwidth/data plans would not be wise.

They dont make money from the hardware, but from the subscription plans.

I've seen Gelaskin adds and banners in LYP showing iPhones since God knows when. That banner is bigger, does that mean that it is a much more "solid" proof of it coming here?

It's sad really that we are hanging and believe every little scrap of info tossed at us, and build our hopes from there on believing something. There is something called "pipe dream" and its opposing brother, "reality". I like to be friends with "Pipe dream"'s brother, "Reality" more than "Pipe Dream", because "Reality" keeps my feet on the ground, not flying on baseless hope.

Here's news from an insider, working midlevel in Maxis. My brother.

After the NST and television broadcasts onslaught of the coming of iPhone via Maxis, he went to get his facts straight, and came back with two interesting news:-

1. Maxis IS finalising the deal of bringing in the iPhones, the only thing is, if any of this is happening, it will not be soon. The oncoming Number Portability Scheme that is supposedly coming this November, MUST happen before you'll see any iPhones around. The reason why, is that with all the Big Three sharing their network into one, that would eliminated the issue of coverage, and the need to jump ship. IIANM, you can still keep whatever numbers you are using now, even if they are of different carriers, and still make use of Maxis's own data service, if you would like to.

2. They(Maxis) are trying to outsource sets from AT&T for their first launch. They are currently trying to figure out of the current 3G model have built-in carrier branding (APN stuck to AT&T only), or if those are editable and branding-free. This will likely come with the need for the addition of either a new lock to turn the AT&T iPhones into Maxis locked iPhones, or a universal unlock, if that is possible. Or they may scrap the entire stock from AT&T and get them someplace else.

It is close, and it is coming very soon, PROVIDED the Number Portability Scheme happens. That was what I was told. Take all this with huge grains of salt, I am not responsible for the spreading or legitimacy of this news.

What's most important is, we can finally get out own Malaysian iPhones, even if they are locked to a single carrier. Even when you think of it, it is not actually locked, when it comes to that Number Portability Scheme. With this happening, parallel import sets will be able to finally get some form of technical support, even if they have to pay for it, since it is bought outside local warranty coverage. All these things are the BIg IFs, so if you absolutely have to get excited, get excited cautiously.

Even if you're a Maxis user, and you're happy that your Maxis sim card can now be used with the iPhone, and if Maxis follows closely what AT&T is doing in regards to contracts and plans, you may be required to enter a term agreement to be binded for a set amount of months before they gave you the iPhone for use. At&T still have not released their no-commitment iPhones, that are supposedly sold on prepaid basis.

Which is why the Number Portability Scheme is important for this to happen. You can still on one carrier and maintain your numbers on the other. I'm not too sure how this will work with data, and in terms of coverage and speed, I'd rather stay with Celcom 3G. Imagine the already poor performance of Maxis' own 3G being bombarded with thousands of new 3G subscribers using their iPhones. The whole network could be congested to hell.
