I started off with 10-52s, never looked back since. Great thick lower strings for those chugging riffs, and thin higher strings for soloing. I cant use 9s, they just feel so weak and lifeless.

Yea, listen to trix. And since you're into metalcore, actives would be good. But what amp do you have? Actives don't sound too good through SS amps, but I heard the Blackouts are better than EMGs on SS amps. And don't get the Invader, it doesn't really sound good from clips I've heard.

Slash uses SD Alnico II Pro pickups, which are really low output. Again, these pickups sound dull through SS amps, they only shine when with a tube, a la Marshall JCM 800!!!

Active pickups have a built in pre-amp and are powered by 9V batteries.

Ok, based on your questions wreckens15, I strongly suggest you to take it to a tech to fix the pickups, haha. And as trix said, check for the cables, connectors and pots. Pots are really important because actives use 25k pots whereas passives like the one currently in your SG use 500k pots.
