I feel that upgrading is a very good step ( our engineers spent so much time doing R&D,for sure its to the better side ) upgrade both together not an issue also.
But if you really want, upgrade one at a time, and see whether you can differentiate the areas specified as,per upgrade....

question time, still haven't got a BD yet,

for those using sony 350, pana 60, 80, sharp, do you think you will upgrade to Pioneer BDP-52
Thank You
*
if already using these like panny 60/80, there is nothing much to squeeze out of PQ and AQ (if sound is bitstreaming to amp)... better spend the $$$ on the display side improvement..

yeah talking about bomb......the usb charger connected to avr power out running usb fan for the avr just exploded internally with very loud sound and bright blue explosion spark. everybody wakes up bcoz of the loud sound laugh.gif

everything went dead. avr, dvdp, bdp, tv, sub. scare the shit out of me. luckily it's just the fuse box that tripped and everything went ok after i reset the fuse box sweat.gif but the charger definitely toast....lucky for me its just the charger.

so dont simply buy cheap rm15 charger. i learnt my lesson blush.gif

good thing is now i know where is the fuse for all my av stuff at fuse db box there tongue.gif

depends on how you look at it, rm 2k for a player that does 10x more functions than a top of the range USD6k marantz BD player ..is probably cheap.. biggrin.gif

Even the universal adapter isn't really universal, you need to make sure the voltage first, otherwise you'll need a portable transformer. laugh.gif
*
yeah lor, universal means kepala can fit many, but if voltage range is not covered by that product, then poof.. asap biggrin.gif

I guess for universal players means more of universal disc formats but not universal region.. biggrin.gif

Oppo BD83 is USD499 and SGD999 (with region free mod).

Dune was USD499 (up till July31) and USD599 now. It can be bought in Spore as well.

When you say better, what do you mean? What are you looking for?

Dune is more of a Media Player with a BD drive. It uses Sigma Designs SOC. It plays almost all formats and supports E-sata. It is aimed at a different market.

Oppo is a BD player with limited media capabilities. It uses ABT VRS chip. It has superior deinterlacing and scaling.
*
deinterlacing and scaling -> more of a DVD feature.. as most commercial BD release is 1080p... smile.gif

For sure, but it depends on what the person needs. If it is used for only BD, then i think the Panny BD60 is good enuf.

ar188,
I have seen some BD players even mess up 1080p/24fps signals.

I left out some other stuff, but if you are interested there is a colour space conversion as well.

BD is encoded in YCbCr 4:2:0.

All BD players need to do some colour space conversion.

The signal needs to be converted and sent out in YCbCr 4:2:2 , 4:4:4, RGB 0-255 or RGB 16-235.

Some chips do this very badly. Some convert the signal to RGB then reconvert to YCbCr. Some do the other way.

Some of the other things that a BD player needs to do is chroma upscaling error detection/correction and if necessary frame rate conversion and progressive signal reprocessing.

As I said earlier, some BD players convert a 24Hz signal to a 60Hz signal and then reconvert it to 24Hz. I know fo 2 players that do this and they mess it up.

BD players are different. Its just that it will not be noticeable unless you look closely. It is more prominent in displays that exceed 60inches.

Thankfully, the PS3 is a very good BD player in terms of PQ. Most BD players get the stuff almost 90% right. The 10% wrong people don't normally see unless they look.

The Dune is one heck of a set, I would like to get my hands on one to test out its capabilities. If you are viewing media, one thing that is important is the ability to handle non standard cadences. The Oppo does this well even though it is not touted as a media player. I want to test the Dunes capabilites of handling odd cadences to see how if fares.

Will you see all this on a BD? No, so if all u need is a BD player, save ur money and get a Panny BD60! It will keep u satisfied for many years to come.
*
even though the above symptoms and video artifacts sounds bad like chroma bug etc, in most cases people don't really notice them.. they just show up when playing test discs or only on certain movie discs at certain parts of the movie. main upgrades like full HD TV or projector will bring more improvement to visual quality than nitpicking on the current crop of BD player's minor visual flaws..

hence why I said the oppo doesn't really bring much food to the table compared to a RM900 BD60... cos 90-95% of the time the image comes out just well (using BD-60 as reference compared to oppo) especially with people using 42-50 inch screens..
while a dune is totally different set of capabilities although it's within USD100 price range from this oppo while probably within the same 90-95% visual performance of standard BD players like BD-60..

We're early adopters bro, we have to know all these to feel good about it. Most of us learn about it the hard way, thanks for our LYN community here that we got to share our knowledge and experience.

Too bad you're no longer a serious BD supporter, as you're one of the earliest BD adopters really. nod.gif
*
what is there to "support" anymore? last time support cos there was format war, and BD won.. now just take own sweet time to get good deals... no need to rush anymore , but that's just me la.. biggrin.gif

speaking of display in HT, this tagline by Blu Ray association (i think its them who came up with this) is quite true as well..

"Without Blu Ray, your HDTV is JUST a TV"
*
but it is a TV.. biggrin.gif unless you gonna download blu-ray signales into your brain directly you still need your eyes to look at the TV right? biggrin.gif

no one denies that it is a tv or display, depends on how you perceive it.

think the idea of the tagline means that it wont utilize its full potential without blu ray.

thought that message is obvious enough.
*
not really, it's just a BD centric/biased message, anything other hi-def video media with 720p or 1080p or even computer source at XGA or more, would also have made a HDTV display feel more than just a TV... think about it.. smile.gif

HD satellite/cable broadcast with the ability to watch HDTV 24/7 would be more important than singlular event blu-ray discs..

and these hi-def media is available due to...?

isnt the HD sat/ca broadcast still limited to 720p?
*
these hi-def media is made available due to broadcast channels way before there is such a thing called BD la..

err.. HD standard and TVs with resolutions above NTSC/PAL (EDTVs and later HDTVs) came out years before blu-ray... so I think it's BS to think blu-ray made HDTV..

why limited to 720p?.. they first came out in 1080i.....

think they're just saying that blu ray bring the most of the HDTV.

by the way, you guys get HD TV broadcast nowadays?
*
no we don't (and I'm sure you are fully aware about that..malaysia don't have HD broadcast biggrin.gif ) but I'm sure that tagline which you mention from BD association isn't born from malaysia right?
most likely was coined in a country like USA where there is HDTV broadcast since 1998-99.. and where BD isn't the only source of HD materials.. while competing with video on demand and the likes.. smile.gif

anyway, your place got sky HD rite?.. how's the broadcast.. nice ar? 24/7 is HD rez? in 720p or 1080i? surely dem nice... switch on tv already HD.. thumbup.gif
