morning everyone~ anyone here have suggestion what kind of syrian hiding house to use?? i have been searching for house big enuf for syrians but cant really find it. either too small or too big...
*
You can get a mug or flower pot as a hideout for your syrian if you are on a budget.

We got this from Ikea under the Kitchen section for our duprasi. It cost under RM10. We also bought a small flower pot for our syrians for RM1.50 each.

Do not get plastic if your syrian is a chewer. You can also look for those wooden house they sell in PLC, Safari, Pet Shack for small animals.

That's the ASKER container rite? Is this the flower pot you bought for your syrian? Is it big enough? Isn't a flower pot too exposed (coz it has a big opening)?
*
I can't remember the name... tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif But that's them. Anyway I think I got the price wrong in the previous reply. Should be RM19.90 not RM10. sweat.gif sweat.gif sweat.gif

I do have living world house and toilet but I found that they like to pee, poo, store food all inside. Plus their fur will be all wet when they come out. Sauna inside I think. All the pee gets on my syrians' fur and it really smell bad. Currently Kiko is staying in the flower pot with timothy hay as bedding. SamSam sleeps behind it. JackJack is a clean boy and got his wooden bridge, wooden house (with the roof taken off) and living world house to hide in.

Now SamSam and Kiko have made the wodent wheels their home where they sleep, pee and poo in it doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif And they smell again.

Our new mink banded, TimTim, we need to tamed him first so we took out the hideout and the wheel so that he won't be afraid of us. Now he is climbing our hands and can be picked up without scooping. But he only half tamed. We only take the stuffs when we are around him so he can see us all the time. Learned this taming method from Nezu and its working.

Thanks Jayniel. Any idea how long can the smoothie last uneaten in the cage? I've read that you can leave it overnight and that's like about 12 hours? I've also read some people saying that it can only last for a few hours in room temperature so I'm kinda confused? 12 hours or few hours? Where's nezuuu, I need answers!  smile.gif
*
You can leave it out for almost 1 day. Sangels mostly feed them 2 spoonfuls at night with the smoothie and by morning or afternoon it will be all gone.

Good news ! I was able to touch Jilly just now, following Nezu's guide by disassembling everything in the cage which left an open area for my finger to approach her.

She tried to run away at first but then i gave her a slice of apple, then i slowly stroke her back. After eating she went to sleep, curled up near the wall while im stroking her, then she was asleep already O_O

I will repeat this tomorrow's night, hopefully she will get to know me biggrin.gif

Congrats! Hopefully she will climb your hand on her own rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

You can get those from Hagen (Habitrail) if you can still find them. Or you can get those from Sanko Wild brand. They do have smaller size silent wheel for dwarves.

Syrians should use the Wodent Wheel Jr or Sanko Wild 21cm Silent Wheel.

thanks everyone, wanted to post some pics but don't dare to snap with flash on....and those without flash, it's either he's moving too fast so the pic is blurry....
*
Try to use more lighting instead of flash. If your camera have those sports mode, can capture fast motions. Also use macro mode if want to take close-up pics.

May be westerns feed hammies with greater portion of meat in their daily diet, while we feed hammies with 'healthy' food - fruits and vegies, all the time. so that's why they're smaller in our country. that's IMO though  laugh.gif
*
Actually if you read those British hamster breeders, they do feed cooked meat and also lots of veges and fruits. They also have something that looks like Foo's smoothie.

Plus you must also know that the hamsters they have their are of good genetic line compared to those here.

I like this hamstery in Leichester UK, called Chocolate Hams. Just look at the size of their syrians and also those rare colors they have there drool.gif drool.gif drool.gif drool.gif

Hi Guys,

Im new here and probably have a few noob question on hamster. Hope you guys can clear my doubts.

Q1. Is Syrian hamster the chubbiest, fattest looking hamster among the 5 species? If not which species is that?

Q2. Correct me if im wrong, i read on the 1st page stating 2 Syrian hamster shall not be placed in the same cage. But i was wondering how come those petshop able to place groups of the same species under the same cage?

Q3. How much lifespan is an average Hamster? Or they varies between species?

Q4. I still have doubts placing a SINGLE Syrian hamster in a cage will not bored it to death. I always thought the more the merrier.
Thx
*
1. Syrians are the biggest in the hamster family.
2. Petshops don't really care if they fight to death when they stay in the same cage. Hamsters will fight when they get older and more territorial. You think petshops will spend money to give each syrian a cage? Of course not.
3. Syrians can live 2+ years.
4. Syrians are solitary animals. How can it be bored? Please don't mix human emotions with syrian's. It's totally different.

I'm new here too...
was thinking to get my new hampster around this week, but got few question here...

at previous ur reply to Waachaa, u mention not to simply buy hamster at any petshop..then where should i buy them from?
Any shop suggest me to get all the stuff for the hamster? example: cages, food and etc
among all the species of hamster, which type is more sociable?
*
We will suggest you try Pet Shack in Mentari Park, Sunway. You can also check out JTL's thread for started kits. Also JTL's syrian hamsters are quite tame.

Better to get from home breeder than those mass breeders that supply to big pet shops.

Syrians are recommended for first time hamster owner.

Breeder Celect bedding mentioned by all of you, is it this ?

Breeder Celect Cat Litter 6L
http://www.petshack.com.my/webshaper/store...ProductItem=383

If this is the one, about how long can it last ?
Delikate is out of stock sad.gif
*
Yes that's BC. It's cats litter.

6L is too little. Get the biggest pack (35L) which can last about 2-3+ months and more economical. The big pack cost about RM90-100.

That's Pets Family. There have lots of syrians. Sometimes they have rare color syrians but need to look carefully. Last time we was there, there were 3 big tanks filled with syrians.

But do note that their syrians might not be as tamed as those in Pet Shack or from Nezu. tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

sometime hamster love bite the metal bar if keep in wire cages.

coltrain,

just get a 2ft tank for your syrian lah. easy to clean, and bigger size also. biggrin.gif
*
Yes they do because the metal got a taste when they bite on it. Also the wire will get rusted and that will be bad for the hamster's health in long term wire biting.

oh yah, those roller so expensive one ?!! The petShack owner recommend me one roller from US and is cost about RM60++ ...I was shock that the roller is the most expensive among all the things.....is it like that ?
*
If you don't want to get the Wodent Wheel Jr, you can opt for the Sanko 21cm Silent Wheel which cost about RM10 cheaper. There is also those cheaper wheels but from past experience some will be noisy after some hammy marathons.

Remember that syrian hamsters requires at least 8" wheel or long term use of smaller wheels will have bad effect on their back and neck.

I'm not sure outisde ppl sell how much for Satin....
But i know that helmet is over price already, with that price i can buy a much better one....

Added on July 3, 2008, 5:43 pmIs there any pet shop in KL selling Satin or Rex Syrian ?
I think the one I saw in Pet Family is Satin, cos its color everything looks same....
*
I don't think we can easily find satin or rex syrians in KL unless you are willing to hamster hunting around. Not just in KL only but around Malaysia.

But I think we can find them in Singapore but very troublesome to bring them back over. Smuggling in is dangerous for you and the hamster. So not really worth it. If declare, its very expensive plus the hamster might get quarantine in customs for some time.

Anyway the satin syrian that passo loco is selling, we are not sure is the fella is healthy or not. Also how old s/he is and all. So it's gamble to get the fella.
