My parents use to own a Sportage 2.0L (older model), and they thought (at first) it would be a good cheap SUV for mild off-road use (on kampung earth/grassy roads, slight hills, etc). Much to their regret, they found the car to be very thirsty, problematic, hassle to switch to 4WD mode (car is 2WD until manually switch to 4WD), and generally underpowered.

I concurred with their view as I drove the car many times. Very very thirsty, and really underpowered (I thought it was 1.3L or 1.5L until my parents proved to me it was 2.0L).

After that experience, my parents couldn't wait to sell the car and replace it with a much better alternative. Since then, we've sworn off all Kia cars. No more for us. Sticking to continentals and Japs.

But I do have to admit, the new Kia designs look good (but I still don't trust it).

Saw in Giant, Kota Damansara just last weekend. Sticker said RM89,000.

Really can't argue at this price!

The biggest problem with this car is perception (and thus, resale value). It is not the most frugal cars around, but hey... tell me which decently sized SUV doesn't drink a bit more than the average passenger car? And it doesn't help that some people are not even comparing apples with apples when it comes to FC... come on.. even the overrated and overpriced CRV can't beat an 850cc Kancil in town.

For what it's worth, the Sportage has a very decent cabin that doesn't feel cheap, lots of legroom, is well insulated, has rear seats that can even recline (kids will love it on long journeys). Nicely sized trunk too.

What else can you buy brand new that can beat all that at under RM90,000?

If you don't like kimchi, the nearest priced sushi SUV is the Grand Vitara. Again, nit-pickers still b!tch about its resale value (there is no pleasing these Honda fanboys).
Just to inform you, the next generation Kia Sportage will be released next year. How long before it makes it here, nobody knows. Usually, it'll take quite a while to replace a CKD model...

...the next generation Kia Sportage is expected to arrive in Korea during the second quarter of 2010. Following its Korean debut, the new Sportage will arrive in the United States towards the middle of 2010, likely as a 2011 model. Sauce

Korean marques are value for money if bought as 2nd hand. U save on the taxes and depreciations.

A 2002 Kia Carnival is around RM 35k now. Previously, it was RM 170k. And many are well kept (mostly 2nd or 3rd car in the house).

I used to owned the 1997 Kia Sportage 2.0 A/T for about 5 years before selling it off. Man, parts are expensive, a full tank goes for 280km, slow and everything rattles after 5 years.

The newer Kia Sportage is based on the Hyundai Tucson or Santa Fe and built quality is a lot better. Engine is much more refined. However, it is still a fuel guzzler when compared to Xtrail or CRV but they cost more.
