miragers...
my family pure..both grandparents are from haikou...
and i have the family book to prove u so...
u may be right, about the generation depth...but i'm only 2nd gen in msia.
it may be up there somewhere some ancestor got lost on the way to msia...thats why maybe picked up some hakka or two.

anyways, no hardfeelings, we are all learning....
*
muahhahaha,

it doesn't matter whether your family is pure or not.

i oso got the family book, but dowan show to you la... nanti u see edi u pengsan.. wahahah

i was saying that the possibility is that your ancestor is Hakka/teochew, but migrated to hainan island thus, the later generations are known as hainanese but incorporated some of the hakka/teochew words into hainanese.

mind telling me the village/district u live in?

i was on a trip there during chinese new year, my uncle (born there) was a ''tu kee''.(test your knowledge, find out what it means)
so i went out with him to his office in a district named boon sio sui/boon sio kui.

while walking around the street with people staring at me like im an alien, i heard smatterings of hakka/teochew in the conversation.

that when they told me that their ancestors originate from mainland but migrated here.

thats y they mixed a bit.

and take note that hainanese is a verbal language, no written form

some chinese word are NOT readable in hainanese

BUT, Generally nobody calls each other kakinang in hainan, unless in malaysia, where ppl have the ability to curse in more than 3 dialects mixed together

Besides, if ur ancestor learn a word or two in hakka, doesn't mean it is hainanese.

so, what fruitie says was right. then you shouldn't go ask her tell ur parents or grandparents.... it is very rude, i think u should apologize to her

you make her lose her identity and reputation as a hainanese
