First of all, what amp are you using? A pedal is only as good as your amp.
And secondly, define "80s Tube Lead"..... As in Metallica-ish sound? Van Halen Sound? Poison Sound? Slash sound? Too many different sounds wei. This post has been edited by blacktrix: Jun 19 2008, 06:17 PM |

yes, 80's sound is marshall sound ! Blacktrix, all the bands you're talking about were playing on Marshall JCM800 / Superlead at that time (as far as i know) : EVH, Slash, Metallica, etc...
And you're in big trouble if you want that sound : warn your bank officer Added on June 19, 2008, 6:57 pmget an amp modeller, such as Line 6 POD xt (there is a very convincing JCM800 sound) or POD 3, or Pandora stuff (never tried that). But that's good for recording or playing on headphones. If you put that through your amp, the sound is different (your amp is going to alterate the original sound). Might be better through a PA system. Added on June 19, 2008, 7:01 pmand there is a bible about guitar tone : http://www.amptone.com/ This post has been edited by Pix: Jun 19 2008, 07:01 PM |

Yup...... the only way to get those sounds will be via a good amp modeller like the POD XT or the VOX tonelab (Which I used before my Marshall and still has the best Tube-Based crunch emulation in my book).
But if you're hoping for a magical pedal that will instantly turn your Cube into a Marshall JCM800? Sorry mate. And yes Pix.... I'm well aware that they all used Marshall, mostly because any metal/rock band loved the Marshall stack.... it's just the various models that I'm referring to.... The infamous Plexis, EVH's #1, or Metallica's early Boogies........ |

I suggest an Ibanez Tube Screamer or the Malaysian favourite (seriously, every guitarist in Malaysia seems to have one) - the Boss Metalzone. Enough tweaking could get you a decent 80s lead tone/sound.
As for getting a Marshall, you probably wouldn't be able to enjoy it. Getting a decent tone out of your stack with a volume set at a "neighbour friendly" volume? I don't think so. Unless you are a serious gear collector, a tone hound or a gigging/recording musician, a tube stack/halfstack is just a waste*. *It is however, not a waste if you let fellow forum members use it. I have a basement and rock-loving neighbours. you can store your stack here! This post has been edited by monosyllabic: Jun 20 2008, 12:26 AM |

Again, what's your budget?
And even a Metal Zone will just make your cube just gainy and fuzzy....... totally opposite of JP... |

Monkeyflier89 : There's alot of things to consider actually.. From amp, to pickups, pedal, and guitar. Not to mention his.. Fingers. Cut them off and glue them onto your own. Don't forget to cut yours off first.
If you want as close to Paul Gilbert as you can, u gotta find out his exact rig n get it all or something as close as possible.. |

Oooh. Whoops. PG not JP. Got it.
But same thing....... the metal zone will break up the sound too much. The only thing I can think of that's in a single pedal that has that British tube sound, would be the Damage Control Liquid Blues or the Vox Bulldog Distortion pedals....... both is around the RM900 Mark mind you (Tonezone selling the Liquid Blues for RM950, while you might find the Bulldog Distortion at CK Music). These two are unique in the sense that it's a complete modulator rather then a pedal. Both uses a tube to get the response and they both sound really good on it's own........ although it could end up a bit thinny due to your small amp. http://www.damagecontrolusa.com/pedals_ind.php?pedal=4 http://www.voxamps.co.uk/pedals/cooltron.asp This post has been edited by blacktrix: Jun 20 2008, 10:11 PM |

Cube15 has limited amp modelling right?MicroCube has "Classic Stack" ... which is kinda 80's rock distortion sound. I think larger Cube has this setting. |

Hmm have you tried using a software amp ? You need to find those connector thingees that can let you connect your electric guitar to the pc ( sorry am a noob dont know what they are called) , Get a copy of Ableton Live 7 (leave it up to you to find out how heh) , And then get Ampitube Metal , Once you hear the distortion you will be utterly flabbergasted... heh , I can vouch for Amplitube HANDS DOWN SUPER PROGRAM ! , Havent used Native Instruments GUITAR RIG.

i'd say a mahogany / humbucker guitar into fender amp shall do the trick. Goal is to push mids and treble, get a crunchy attack, but still keep it smooth sounding. A compressor might help. A bit of reverb / delay also perhaps. Anyway, the sound is in the attitude, there. NY spirit ! |
