the sting ray that killed steve is the big one, and live in sea water.
if I am not mistaken the largest of all stingray is the manta ray and grow up to 5 - 6 meters in wing span.
the size is very big and so wide the way it swims it's like flying or gliding through water.

look at the size of that thing compare to the diver

dude, if im not mistaken that's a mantaray --, they're harmless

biggrin.gif Hi All,
I am a new member from India. I am an aquarium hobbyist. I want to know few things about fresh water sting rays. I have been keeping one sting ray for almost 6 months. He ( or she !) is doing well. Last week I got one more.

Can any body help me to identify these two rays. I am feeding them with pealed prones, nothing else is acceptable for them. Is there any other food which is accepted by sting rays. What all things that I have to take care to provide them a good enviornment and health.

Regards

Ajay

wow....finally there some feedback coming in..thankz everyone!!!!
motoro is the most basic or so called stingray for beginner....it is more easier to rare compare to other type of stingray...... for that size of motoro stingray, especially its a female....it will cost alot more expensive than the male.....it cost rm1k and above.....for a male at that size...u can get it below rm1k.....
motoro baby or small motoro is cost about rm300 for a male and rm380 for a female.....so u can roughly see the idea what the price about......
there are few kind of stingray you can get in malaysia......they are namely:-
motoro
pearl
henlei
tiger
leopoldi
& etc......
crocodile hunter is killed by a wild stingray and its a salted version of stingray.....
this stingray is freshwater.....anyway, its the same......jus that this is freshwater another is saltwater version...
Will update more pic about this freshwater stingray sooN!!!

I have a good friend in Malaysia, his name is Mr.Jason of Flower horn consortium.I had purchased flower horns and discus from him last year. Do you know him ? Regarding the price for Leopoldi, Is it RM 20000?!!!.

Hi,
Ornamental fish import is not allowed in India. But if you hand carry one or two fishes when you come from abroad normally customs wont trouble you but some times they seize that also. There are some carriers who brings all sorts of ornamental fishes from Singapore and there are some traders who purchases it from them and sell it to the local shops.

I got both the rays like that. Getting rare varieties in Indian market is very very difficult. Carriers bring only items that can be sold immedietly.

Being an expert in Sting ray could you pls help me out to provide my sting rays a better enviornment in the tank. I am a begginer in Sting ray.I have the following doubts,I hope you will clarify those.

1) How big the aquarium should be ( They are 4-5" in diameter ),What type of subsrate is suitable, and what type of filteration is ideal.

2) What all feeds do they take.(At present I am feeding them with only peeled prowns, they are not taking any thing else)

3) Is it possible to diferentiate the sex at this size.

I hope you will not hesitate to give your advice.

Thank you

Regards

Ajay

Ajay, i would try my best to answer as much as i know from what i learn.....im not a pro yet...still a student learning about the nature of this freshwater stingray....so i hope every1 out there can share their experience here....n correct me if im wrong....smile.gif

the rule for keeping stingray is , keep it in a tank as big as possible....rays like big tank....for example like yours, a 4 feet tank would be enough at this moment...but will need a bigger one when they grow bigger....
a tank dats big as 6 x 3 x 3 would probably able to keep 4 adult stingray......

foods that they take would be shrimp, live fish, earth worm ....etc.....more to things that is soft or not too hard as well as things that can be fit in its mouth!.....so if you are thinking to comm tank ur stingrays with other fish, try to get the fish that not easily fit into rays mouth as they will clean up everything dat the tank have....

the sex diffenrentiation can be found in this thread somewhere in the pages 2....i have post up the topic on how to differentiate the sex there....wink.gif
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=18054337

anyway, im not hesitate to share!! i love sharing!!...smile.gif

by the way, nice to know u n get some new info that india is hard to get ornamental fish...wat a sad thing....
any reason that the govenrment do not allow ornamental fish to be import to india???

Hi
Thank you so much for your reply.I have checked the link which tells about deferentiating sex of sting rays.Regading the govt restriction on import.govt of India has included these items in restricted species category. If somebody wants to bring some fishes they have to get a special permit from DGFT ( Director general of foreign trade) and its a Herculian task. You have to provide a huge documents including the photos of fishes at different ages, even then there is no gurentee that you will be permitted.Just imagin the compersome procedures involved to get a fish, that is why no body is trying to import the fish to India, rather they smuggle it.

Please let me know what will be the cost of a Chilly red arowana there (size- 6").It should be taged and guarenteed for color.

Ajay

Hi
Why I said guarantee is that, I have seen big Red arowans,18-20"size( There will be a light red color on the fins, nothing else) purchased by people by spending good amount for a small one (4-5"). From the LFS you will get certificate with tag no and everything but once they grow up ,you cant find any red coloration on the body inspite giving good food and water condition. So I have a strong feeling that what we get here is not an A grade(Best quality)Arowanas, the reason is very simple since the carriers are bringing it,they do not take a chance by spending lot of money on a juvanile red arowanas as there is no guarentee that they they can come out of the Airport, without being caught, with the fish.

Regarding my Sting ray,I paid aproximately US $ 140 ( I do not know the conversion rate for RM,that is why I mentioned in dollors) for each (3.5-4"dia). that too after waiting for two months after placing an order with a bigger wholesaler who normally gets the fishes from the carriers. As I mentioned early these carriers normally do not bring sting rays and some african cichlids which are not fast moving in the trade, unless there is a special order for that variety.

So I do not know whether I have paid a lot more than the price in Malaysia. Regarding the sex,one guy is a male today I checked it when he was climbing the walls of the aquarium the other one was always on the bottom so I could not check it. Pls let me know the price of same size Sting ray at Malaysia.(If possible pls convert it in to US $)

Regards

Ajay
