is a 4 feet tank size big enough to conduct captive breeding of stingray?
and another thing is most stingray are wild collected from rivers such as Amazon, am i right to say captive bred stingrays are more suitable and adaptive in aquariums & water composition? i have read it before in books, that freshwater stingray have ancestry decent from their saltwater cousins. During the earth continental drift (tectonic drift) movement of the earth continents, has causing sub-divided oceans and rivers are formed from it, and water gradually looses it salinity level in waters further inland farther away from the ocean, some stingrays are trapped and become adapted to freshwater rivers over thousands of years in its evolution and survival capability. Some can even survive in brackish water, the area which the river meets the sea. Research has findings shows that bacteria that live in the digestive system of a freshwater stingray are the same ones that are found in those stingrays that live in sea water. Guess that will answer why freshwater stingrays are sensitive to changes in the water in terms of salinity and chemicals. This post has been edited by blitzboy: Jun 14 2008, 02:41 AM |

Hi blitzboy, you r absolutely correct...what u say i true....and another thing is most stingray are wild collected from rivers such as Amazon, am i right to say captive bred stingrays are more suitable and adaptive in aquariums & water composition? i have read it before in books, that freshwater stingray have ancestry decent from their saltwater cousins. Guess that will answer why freshwater stingrays are sensitive to changes in the water in terms of salinity and chemicals. dats y sometime u will see ppl saying that having a stingray or raring a stingray is difficult while some say no.... there are few tactics or secret recipe that we need to know.... i learn from mistake....i have lost alot of money in this stingray, but i also do learn alot of thing..... im glad that you brought up this issue.... 1st of all, stingray are definitely from amazon which is Brazil, Peru, Mexico and etc..... 4year ago, when i rare this stingray, most of the people have failed so do i, but some ppl survive .... 1 have a bunch of fren rare this stingray 4 years ago...so we learn from here n there to find out the reason 4 years ago, our main source are from brazil, so when the ray's arrive malaysia, they need times to get use to our malaysia waterquality and environment......sme survive some no.... after these time we have learn n keep it survive, we manage to captive breed it... for now, if you wan to buy a stingray from a LFS, the most important Question that you need to ask the LFS is where the ray's come from..... you need to very sure where the ray's come from, if it s not captive breed then think twice...if captive breed, then the chances of survival is higher.. but if the LFS say import from somewhere else or he brought from someone who import from somewhere else....then becareful... beside this, when u deicde to buy the ray's... ask the LFS to feed the ray....to check whether they eat or not....is they eat...then add another point in ur buying chances..... many other thing that you need to look into before you buy a ray..... will put in more information sooon!!! nice to meet u blitzboy QUOTE(FlamingIT @ Jun 14 2008, 01:53 PM) my location is Sunway.....we may make a plan to meet up if possible.... |

QUOTE(yscagro @ Jun 17 2008, 05:36 PM) It's not a good sign if you see your rays breath like this.... Few problem might have cause this.. Water condition, ammonia level too high Worst if the rays already being affected with virus internally.... i am considering keeping rays, and looking for those captive bred ones. If you manage to breed them i don't mind to buy a male and female sting ray from you. I think a 4 feet tank would be sufficient to breed them. I am from subang jaya. LOL. you mean sting ray do attack when you handle it? you mean it bites your fingers? This post has been edited by blitzboy: Jun 17 2008, 10:53 PM |

QUOTE(HolyCross @ Jun 18 2008, 07:46 PM) the sting ray that killed steve is the big one, and live in sea water. if I am not mistaken the largest of all stingray is the manta ray and grow up to 5 - 6 meters in wing span. the size is very big and so wide the way it swims it's like flying or gliding through water. ![]() look at the size of that thing compare to the diver |
