what a pity the big team is taking an advantage of the loophole in the law..... but most of the promising young players are already snapped up at very early ages, anyway.
perhaps, the african and sa streets offer more unpolished gems.
then, we could not just take 'em away from their parents.

btw, never really heard of fabrice muamba. at 5mil, the bpl's rate is overrated!

Real Madrid awaits Ronaldo's declaration of intent

Make no mistake about it: Real Madrid wants Cristiano Ronaldo.

But the Spanish club said Thursday it is waiting for the Portuguese winger to make some sort of public declaration of intent before it tries to sign him away from English Premier League champions Manchester United.

Ronaldo, regarded as the best player in the world, has in the past few weeks become the subject of a possible big-money transfer between the two clubs. The 23-year-old star is currently playing for the Portuguese national team at Euro 2008 and although he has hinted that he'd like to play for Madrid, he told reporters earlier this week he won't comment on his future until the end of tournament on June 29.

As a result, the Spanish outfit is playing the waiting game.

"We're waiting for Cristiano to make a statement. Whenever he says he wants to play for Real Madrid, there would be conversations between the two clubs," Madrid spokesman and general director Miguel Angel Arroyo told radio station Onda Madrid.

"We would be delighted to reach an agreement with Manchester if the possibility exists, that is, if they want to sell and the price were reasonable," Arroyo added.

Recent Spanish media reports suggested Real Madrid would consider tabling a $158.7-million Cdn offer to United for the services of Ronaldo, who joined the English club from Sporting Lisbon in 2003.

Madrid holds the record for the biggest transfer fee in soccer history, paying Italian team Juventus $71.5 million for the services of Zinedine Zidane in 2001.

Reports also suggest Real would be willing to pay Ronaldo $30 million a season, a contract that would make him the highest-paid soccer player in the world.

Ronaldo signed a five-year contract extension with Manchester United last April, tying him to the club until the end of the 2011-12 season. For Ronaldo to join Real Madrid, United would first have to agree to sell him, but the English club has publicly and repeatedly said it has no intention of doing that.

United filed an official complaint to FIFA over Real Madrid's attempts to sign the Portuguese star but soccer's world governing body decided to take no action because it said no regulations had been broken.

Real Madrid have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Manchester United has plenty of reasons for wanting to keep Ronaldo. He scored 42 goals in all competitions for United this season, helping the Red Devils claim their second consecutive Premier League title and win the Champions League final.

He's also the top candidate to win the FIFA world player of the year award that will be handed out by soccer's world governing body in December.

I don't think 'anyone' can simply score 42 goals for Man UTD...

it will take another ruud, perhaps.
but considering that ronaldo is operating from the wing, yet he still managed to bang in 42,
it's kinda hard to be replaced. anyway, mu is not all about ronaldo.
real madrid better tabled an offer of 80 million pounds.
