Spurs agree deal for keeper Gomes
QUOTE Tottenham have agreed a deal with PSV Eindhoven to sign goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, subject to personal terms, a medical and a work permit. Gomes, 27, has played for Brazil and helped PSV to the Dutch title last season conceding only 24 league goals. His arrival will alarm Paul Robinson who was dropped from the Spurs side last season by boss Juande Ramos. Gomes made his name at Cruzeiro in Brazil before moving to PSV in 2004 where he has won four Dutch titles. He will be a familiar face to Tottenham fans as he played a part in Spurs exiting the Uefa Cup last season when he saved a Jermain Jenas penalty in a shootout PSV won 6-5 in the last 16 of the competition. Robinson had a torrid time last season not only losing his place in the Spurs team but also missing out to David James in the England goal. The 27-year-old, who has also played for Leeds, has been linked with Aston Villa during the summer. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/t...pur/7476574.stm |

The 30-year-old was recently told by Barca's new coach Pep Guardiola that he did not feature in their future plans. "It is good for me to be here and first of all I am very happy to be here," Deco told Chelsea's official website. Deco becomes the Blues' first signing since Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was appointed manager earlier this month. However, his signing is Chelsea's second of the summer after international team-mate Jose Bosingwa. Brazil-born Deco joined Barcelona from Porto in 2004 after helping the Portuguese side win the Uefa Cup, Champions League and domestic league titles under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. He won two league championships with the Catalan giants, and was part of the team that beat Arsenal in the Champions League final in Paris in 2006. However, a series of injuries hampered him during the 2007-08 season, and he made just 14 starts in Barcelona's La Liga campaign. "I am sure I have come at the right time to do great things and be able to help Chelsea go back to the way it was and come back to being the first one, not only in England but also to win the Champions League that has been their dream for so long," added Deco. "The Premier League is a great league and it is getting better and you can see that with the Champions League final, where you had two English teams." Deco's arrival significantly boosts a midfield line-up already featuring the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien, Jon Mikel Obi and Claude Makelele. "It is great that we have so many great players here at Chelsea and it is great that there is the competition which is healthy for everybody and this just makes the team better," he added. "To have great players in any position of the club just enhances the club. I know it is a new challenge but I am looking forward to it." BBC Radio 5 Live football correspondent Jonathan Legard said that Deco caught the eye in Scolari's midfield during Euro 2008 more than team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo. "A two-year deal suggests he is not a long-term building block. He will be 31 in August but his winners' pedigree, Champions League triumphs with Barcelona and Porto will balance recent fears about fitness and consistency," said Legard. And Legard believes Deco's arrival makes Lampard's possible exit to Inter Milan even more likely. "Deco's arrival looks like hastening the departure of Frank Lampard, who has done little to quell long-term speculation that he is bound for a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan. "Barring a last-minute change of heart on both sides it's a question of when he signs in Italy, not if." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/t...sea/7482359.stm |

Barca seal £23.5m deal for Alves
QUOTE Barcelona have completed the signing of Brazilian defender Daniel Alves from La Liga rivals Sevilla for about £23.5m. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/7485815.stmThe 25-year-old becomes the world's most expensive right-back after ending his six-year spell with Sevilla. "Barcelona want a return to the success of two years ago and it's an honour that they are counting on me," he said. Alves is Barca coach Pep Guardiola's fourth signing of the summer after defenders Gerard Pique and Martin Caceres and midfielder Seydou Keita. Guardiola believes Alves could form a devastating partnership down the right flank with Barca's Argentine winger Lionel Messi. "They are the two best players on the right flank and if they play well we'll have the best right side," said Guardiola. "He's a player that needs space. I hope to get the most out of him and we hope he feels good here." Guardiola has already sold Giovani dos Santos to Tottenham and Deco to Chelsea since taking charge, while saying Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o can leave the Nou Camp. Man City complete record Jo deal QUOTE Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Brazilian striker Jo for an undisclosed club record fee. The 21-year-old CSKA Moscow star is the first signing by City boss Mark Hughes since his arrival at Eastlands. Jo, who helped CSKA win four trophies during a three-year spell in Russia, has agreed a four-year deal. "I decided to come to Manchester City because it is one of the clubs who showed more interest in me, although I had other offers as well," said Jo. He added: "After I spoke to the manager (Hughes) I was very pleased. "I was told Manchester City is a club going forward at the moment. We can go places, that is our objective. We thought about it and I decided to come to Manchester City for that reason." Jo also revealed that Spanish outfit Valencia were one of the clubs that were interested in the striker. "The club who showed interest officially was Valencia," he said. "I know from the press there were other clubs who showed interest." "He's a big guy, in stature and ability, so I think everybody will enjoy watching him play," Hughes added on the club's website. "A lot has been said about him and there was an expectation on him coming out of Brazil, so with the success he's had, I think it's a real coup that we've been able to bring him to the club." The transfer, thought to be worth about £18m - beating the £13m the club spent to sign Nicolas Anelka from Paris Saint-Germain in 2002 - was first mooted several weeks ago and City will be delighted to have finally got their man. Jo is advised by Kia Joorabchian, who was involved in the saga concerning Carlos Tevez's move to West Ham in August 2006 and later switch to Manchester United. The 6ft 3in forward, whose full name is Joao Alves de Assis Silva, scored 44 goals in 77 games for CSKA Moscow. He also helped them to a Russian league and cup double in 2006 and has Champions League experience, notably scoring home and away against Italian champions Inter Milan last season. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/t...ity/7442429.stm |

Keegan nets Spiderman
QUOTE Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan has made his first signing of the summer with the acquisition of Argentina international Jonas Gutierrez. The right-side forward arrives at St James' Park on a five-year deal after Newcastle concurred on an undisclosed fee with Real Mallorca. Nicknamed 'Spiderman' for his elaborate goal celebrations, Gutierrez had previously been linked with a move to Portsmouth. Keegan is confident Gutierrez, who turns 25 on Saturday, will quickly establish himself as a favourite in the North East. "Jonas is a wonderful signing for us," he told the club's official website. "I know a lot of other clubs have been interested in him. He'll be a terrific addition to the squad. "He's an exciting player and I'm sure our fans will enjoy watching him." Exciting prospect Gutierrez admits he had no doubts about making the move to England once Newcastle made their interest known. "I cannot tell you how excited I am to be joining Newcastle United. "The Premier League is a great place to play and I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and prove myself to the Newcastle United fans." Gutierrez's signing could well heighten speculation that reported Liverpool and Aston Villa target James Milner will be allowed to leave the club. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_3766030,00.html Tigers wrap up Fagan swoop QUOTE Hull City have completed the permanent signing of Craig Fagan from Derby County. The Tigers were granted permission to speak to the 26-year-old after agreeing a £750,000 fee with The Rams for his services last month. Hull are fully aware of the striker's capabilities after he finished the end of last season back at the KC Stadium after re-joining the club on loan. Three-year deal Fagan, who has signed a three-year deal with the East Yorkshire outfit, becomes the club's first signing this summer in the process. "Craig leaves with our best wishes and thanks for the hard work he put in at Derby," Rams boss Paul Jewell told the club's official website. "I don't think it's any secret that Craig wanted to make his deal permanent and I believe it's a deal that benefits all parties involved - both clubs and the player." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_3767393,00.html |
