I did just that click on the upgrade button in 7.10, it screws up my display. I had to do a clean reinstall with Linux Mint Daryna and lost all my torrents in progress..

aha 8.04 works for me.. the cd arrived yesterday.. lol but i long installed it even b4 that...

anyway the most significant change i found is better driver support,
eg in my case it recognized my USB Wifi Dongle without any third party installs (a standard Broadcom chipset, previously required to manually compile the driver from source)

PS: I'm using and old gc ATi9200SE no probs there

My desktop can't be enabled after upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. Luckily i reinstalled the latest binary driver from nvidia and it works again.

It boots up much faster than the previous gutsy 7.10. smile.gif

Ubuntu 8.04 rockz. Tested for about 5- 6 days. System stability way better than my expectation (better than beta as I heard). Next plan is to test FC9. Heard it is much better now.

synaptic package manager gui for beginners...

wget, apt-get or equivalent command line tools for advanced users...

For beginners: Linux programs are distributed as "packages" (or " software installers" in Windows). There are a few "package" formats. Common formats are ".RPM", ".DEB". These formats contain installation scripts, compilation scripts, configuration scripts and sometimes binary or zipped files encapsulated inside a package.

there's lot of features come with 8.04 LTS compared to 7.10 version.Those who interested to use Ubuntu,better get Hardy Heron because it have wubi application where you can install into your windows and you may remove it without leaving any problem.

Just tested Fedora 9 (from DVD installer), results: Amazing, 4.5 stars out of 5. Compared with Ubuntu 8.04, I have encountered several bugs before, like the screen turned dotted, and I need to find a wireless driver for my Compaq laptop to be used. Whereas, Fedora 9 is beyond my expectations, the KDE GUI turns out very cool, wireless driver ready, automatic softwares updates are also available. Thumbs up for Fedora 9

Installed 8.04 for one week... it is better than my previous opensuse 10.3.

- easier ati driver and compiz configuration
- finally can adjust the screen brightness
- wireless connects flawlessly (intel 3945)

the downside is, not very familiar with gnome interface/tools. Dislike the power management tool also, which do not provide any option to change the power option to powersave. need to manually install KDE's kpowersave. video playback on gstreamer is jerky, and my built-in memory card reader still cannot be used though lspci shows the correct driver, after plugging in memory card still no effect.

overall, i give this ubuntu 7/10, is better than previous ubuntu's (which can't even install on my lappie and old pc). Waiting for opensuse 11 rclxms.gif

during ubuntu 5.04, i apply 25 cd, they give 25 cd,
now i apply 25 cd, they give me 5 only...

hey guys.. new ubuntu user here..
i installed ubuntu last night as i was getting pretty pissed with vista (bugs and some driver issues)

anyways after i installed the latest ubuntu 8.04 LTS my pc was fine the desktop everything was fine.. .
then i went to SYSTEM >> ADMINISTRATION >> HARDWARE DRIVERS and i installed what it told me to install.. after i installed the recommended display card driver.. and restarted the pc... my screen became pixelated and crappy.. with like some boxes in the middle and here and there... sort of like the screen became blur la.. so then i uninstalled the driver and restarted the pc.. .after that its all back to normal..

what happened?

EDIT: using NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

ubuntu may not have all the supported drivers especially for Graphic Card...
thus, the best option is just let ubuntu to auto-detect the card and it will do the rest of the job nicely for u... smile.gif

My suggestion, download the driver from Nvidia. http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_169.12.html
There are some steps that you need to follow before and during installation. You can find more info here...

It's great to see so many users are trying Linux especially Ubuntu. Help to save cost and keep pirated stuffs away. Bravo! Long live Ubuntu. For developers, you may try Fedora core. May be time consuming to update those codec stuffs, but you may learn another different curves. Good luck!

having problems installing my canon pixma ip1880 driver.... searched online but to no avail... tried many instructions online but still cant get it to print..

any ideas?

EDIT:
Its ok i found a solution.. so well, anyone here new to ubuntu and are also using any canon pixma 1800 series printers can use this guide

HOW TO GUIDE

but for ubuntu 8.04 users.. in step 4 under configure CUPS, you dont have to select 'USB Printer #1 with status readback for Canon IJ' under which device do you wanna use... just select which ever it recommends.. thats how it all worked for me..

pcm.pulse {
type pulse

ctl.pulse {

}
pcm.!default {

My question is, the 2nd hdd 160GB contains most of my personal data, i wonder what impact will be if i boot ubuntu and try to use the 2nd hdd?

i understand it's a stupid question, but it's my first in ubuntu, please advise. thanks!

So here it comes, since i am new for Ubuntu. I chose the 1 that boot from CD for DEMO in Full installation.
After i boot it from CD then it keep running those code..... like DOS....for a period of time...
I thought it wont be too long since it just a DEMO right, but it like WONT stop.
How long does it takes to INSTALL ??
And the situations happened to me is it normal ???
