Hi Everyone

I'm gonna need some advice here. I just recently arrived to KL,Malaysia for my degree course. Soon as I arrived here, I started to subscribe one  to one of the ISP. As I'm not a Malaysian, No Streamyx.

My room mate(he's a foreigner too) suggests me to subscribe with Celcom. Then I subscribed with Celcom, the story begins  blush.gif .

Before I sign up, I did ask the lousy dealer like 3 times "is there any data or bandwidth limit for each month?" and he said "No, No Limit". I even stated to him clearly that I'm a heavy downloader (though I don't use Torrent or Lime Wire), his answer is "No Problem".

He recommends me for D68 Package and there's a great network coverage at the hostel I live (Vista Komanwel). But I chose D98 as I want faster and better speed (that what i expect tongue.gif ). I was just activated last week on Tuesday.

Yes as he said, I got a good signal. Never goes down below 3 bars. But HSDPA is not very consistent.

Now, I'm a bit disappointed especially with their unstable connection. Disconnected, Disconnected ,Disconnected.... And what's more? I just read here that D98 plans are also eligible to be capped. I even haven't download large files as my rapidshare account has expired already.

I came from a country which still don't have a well and proper infrastructure of internet system. I thought it would be much better in here.

So, I would like to get your's opinions on what should I do? Terminate from Celcom and subscribe to another provider ? (may be Maxis or U Mobile ? )
or should I just wait a little bit longer for the time they might improve their service?  hmm.gif

and Off Topic, my modem is 3M Mobile's H10 HSDPA Modem. If I subscribe to another provider can I still use it?
psst..!

Set network mode to GPRS/EDGE Only and you won't be disconnected from net.  brows.gif

you live there eh. You got more options , you may want to try JARING Wireless. They don't cap your bandwidth. but you'll have to pay something up front and you'll be tied to a 12-month contract. Maxis isn't recommended since you are a heavy downlaoder and they'll cap your bandwidth to 256Kbps once you have reached your 20GB limit

But remember there is a data limit cap. They'll cap you to 64kbps once you have reached your download limit. now if tmnet does that , it would be great !

Go directly to the Celcom Centre and not the agent, I have very bitter experience with the agent. Please avoid them of whatever means, trust me. biggrin.gif
Blur your IP address, not good to show it here. smile.gif
I didn't check the location all this while. blush.gif

It is a shared IP Address. you dont have to worry. Celcom blocks incoming connection , hence it is impossible for you to get hacked. Even I can post my maxis bb ip publicly , the reason why i am not posting is because of maxis cybertroopers that are out here in the wild

Maxis® Cybertroopers , will do just about anything. I've noticed , after posting SSH bypass trick , it doesn't work anymore with maxis. It seems they are keeping track what we are doing here. Thats about it. Trust me , now my SSH trick doesn't work anymore with Maxis , however it works with Celcom.

Anyway,

Back to the SSH stuff. as we all know that We are behind one big IP Address. (for celcom users) and you can't use services such as rapidshare , etc etc etc. Plus you can never be a host (to host games , services and even use remote access). SSH Tunnelling bypasses this. Heck , it even bypasses the transparent proxy that you guys are using to surf the web. So pretty much your speed/throughput would be much better then say using their proxy. This is why your speed test results aren't accurate.

Actually TM is a rich company but I still don't know why they can't provide good facilities. shakehead.gif
I rather hope for other ISPs to give more competition to TM, they are seriously monopolising the country's Internet broadband service, they need stiff competition to improve. laugh.gif

Other ISPs. TM knows that no other ISP comes to TM. Pretty much its a win-win situation for TM. TM wins it all !

some questions to ask all the celcom broadband sifu...

1) For the advance plan that cost rm98/mth(3.6mbps), wat is the average upload and download speed??
2) Software such as BT or limewire possible to use thru celcom broadband??
3) Possible to play dota or online game with the speed? (3G ping is higher?? so maybe cant??)
4) Is it compulsory to buy the celcom usb modem?? (that cost rm899 without 12 months contract) i jz wan the celcom sim card.
5) Is there any other modem such as the Maxis ZTE Modem (MF600)?? as i wanna use the celcom sim card on it. (don wan to use the usb modem that need plug to my lappy)
6) Is there possible to use the sim card on a 3G phone oso?? to hv the unlimited 3G or act like a modem for lappy.
7) Coverage, kedah hv?
thx...

1) Thats Maxis' PLAN. Celcom doesn't have a RM 98 package. They do have RM 99 package which is their 7.2Mbps package (only in certain areas). You can't say what is the average upload and download. Let me tell you this , for wireless there is no such thing as consistent speed. today you might get 3Mbps , tomorrow you might get like 500Kbps or so

2) Works fine. According to the folks here. All p2p application just works fine. Just keep in mind that there is a 5GB cap

3) *sigh*. Speed and latency two different things. Look at the speed tests , notice their speed is much more higher then say a Streamyx connection. But their latency is well higher compared to a streamyx connection. you might able to pay dota , but just keep in mind of the latency. Its not going to be as smooth as streamyx and at time there will be lag spikes as its caused by packet losses (this usually happens). So if you are thinking about FPS , then think again

4) No

5) Well if you can get hands on the crappy ZTE MF600 , why not. It will work as long maxis didn't SIM LOCK it or do any sort of funny stuff (they are capable for doing such things)

6) you may use it as a modem. But keep in mind , you might not able to send SMS or make calls . i am not too sure about that as they'll just activate data services. You'll have to consult telekom

1) Jz tell me ur average speed.
3) Dota oso cant?? garena
4) The usb modem is so expensive, that mean no choice, i hv to buy it.
5) So any other brand modem that is same as the maxis ZTE modem?? nop??

i don wan to use the usb modem, any other suggestion?? coz my room got no signal.. i wanna place the modem on the living room. and then connect it to my pc using lan cable or wireless.

2)You can play online games. But latency is going to be the killer. You'll have to be on HSDPA area to enjoy lower latencies (around 90-110ms for local connection)

3) Its up to you

4) There are some out there. 3G Modem + router. There are tons of combination. You'll have to get D-link 3G router and a PCMCIA 3G Card/USB Modem

It happens sometimes when there are too many users in your area. a tower can hold up to 10 HSDPA sessions at a time. The other reason could be is that they are doing some maintenance (maybe they are adding more cell towers ?)

Celcom is good. I heard they might be shaping maxis' postpaid services also. If there is more demand in broadband then chances are it might get shaped eventually and i heard that there is a 20GB data limit for postpaid users. I am not sure how far it is true

Your upload seems to be pretty good

fruite , try to download a very large file and test your speed. see how high it goes

Added on June 15, 2008, 7:25 pmNotice your latency , as the signal gets better the latency will get better....That is the key indicator

You will have to get the Dlink modem which costs you around RM 600+. Combine that and Huawei E220 and you're set

You can't share using a normal router. you'll have to get a special 3G-enabled router or so that allows you to share connection using that.

Hi digilife,
thanks for your infor. However, could you please comment on the few queries that i mentioned in my initial post? I know most people is Celcom broadband user, however, i hope to get unbiase comment as i'm in the midst of making decision and hope that LowYat is the place that could provide me with the kind of infor that i want.

I could get the HSDPA cell station infor from the promoter themselve. what i want is real life experience.

You can't. Pretty much there will be mixed review just like streamyx. For example , I find streamyx to be okay and it gets its job done (minus slow downs on international link and slow speeds on p2p). I don't mind slow p2p speeds and other stuff but some people do take that seriously and they start to rant. Same goes for celcom. If you ask person A , he might say Celcom sucks as the speed is low , 5gb cap and if you ask the same question again to lets say uh person b , maybe he/she will say that celcom package is superior

Here is my suggestion

you can try celcom if its meant for you or not by using a 3g phone and a celcom prepaid sim card and do a couple of tests to see if its okay or not. You'll get a general picture on how wireless connection works and other things.

guys, i just upgraded my simcard to XPAX 3G. i want to ask, if i subscribe to daily unlimited package RM8 broadband with my N73, will the speed be same with D68 in N73?

another question is, either i use XPAX 3G simcard or the CELCOM D68 simcard in my N73. when there is 3G coverage in my area the symbol above signal bar will display 3G right? if it doesnt display 3G (either XPAX 3G sim or celcom broadband sim) that means in my current area there is no 3G service right?
*
1) No , not really. Celcom separates prepaid and postpaid users into two different APNs. Chances are your speed will be slower then D68 package users even if you're connected to cell tower. Prepaid uses get less speed compared to a normal postpaid users. they have tweaked and tuned couple of stuff so that prepaid users dont hog up the bandwidth.

2) Your phone will show if you're under 3G Coverage or 2G Coverage. If there is no 3G Coverage , your phone automatically connects to the internet via GPRS !

i saw at the agent place i subscribed my D68 package this morning u can buy the modem from 399 to 599 depends on the model u want.
bro, IF 3G bar only has 1 or sometime no bars at all, the phone/modem will automatically changes to normal mode eh? because for me i live in kampung right now (tomorrow going to bangi), i got FULL bar for normal mode and someitme 1 bar for 3G mode.

Don't worry. It will fall back to GPRS or EDGE. Your connection might be interrupted for a second or two !

Just now called Celcom Careline regarding this 5Gb limit. The Cust Exec said that it was just temporary. They are upgrading the system coz current system just unable to cater overwhelming no of customer. She later added that the limit will be stopped when they finished upgrading (After June 30). Well...well...well..I'm very curious to wait n see whether what that had been said is true....

Good news for celcom users eh ?. I hope it is for you guys !

Maybe...who knows. Just pray....But I wonder if they will block p2p after this as they will be offering unlimited unmetered bandwidth. Let us just wait and see
