Hehe.... blush.gif I chicken out and got a friend who does Touch Screen to install for me... he will be doing that tomorrow. But JKK Mobile Web has a 45 min video in flash that guides from opening the 901... all the way to completetion. Very detail and impressive, it looks not complicated, the video file is about 90MB you can use some kind of utube downloader to capture and view a few time before you start your mod.

blush.gif mad.gif Reason I chicken is that I broke the ZIF cable when I tried to do the 30GB 1.8" ZIF upgrade. I am not as patience as most people. So now I am looking for a replacement ZIF cable... anyone got a spare. brows.gif

Tak boleh tahan....... cannot wait until tomorrow. So went and pick up some double sided tape. A new cutter blade and with JKK Mobile 901 Touchscreen tutorial. I proceed to open up my 901 and was supprise that my soldering skill is still there biggrin.gif

... after a good 2 hours I am happy to inform that my Touchscreen 901 is successfull rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

It works great, I cannot see any buldge on the screen panel but when I fold the notebook to close there seems to be a small gap between the screen and the touchpad end. Well I can live with that. So far the touch screen works great and I am searching right now for the utility for grab and drag and then it would be so COOL cool2.gif

rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif I am sure it would help when I am using it on my lap without the mouse. Screen clarity looks pretty OK and after a while I am sure you would not notice it. Well I have to test it out in daylight.

It is pretty scarry opening up the screen side plastic panel and the soldering of the +D -D is actually pretty tiny, so I would suggest that one must have some soldering skill before trying to do this upgrade.

Well lets see how it goes in the next few day.

Congratulations. You might just be the first person in Malaysia to have done this. So you hide the PCB between the zif connector and twin USB port like JKK?
*
techhuan,

Yup as what you see in JKK video tutorial, I am still trying to find how JKK does the grab and drag in Internet Explorer as it is so COOL. I have not manage to get it working on IE, Firefox or Opera. I was told that mouseimp pro now support Firefox and Opera no can do right now rclxub.gif .

It definitely helps a lot when I am on the move and the respond is much better than the touchpad it self. The only drawback is that it actually introduce a little bit of a glare on the screen and brightness may have drop by 5%. Overall it is not a bad upgrade for the total cost of RM300/=

And it works SO WELL with Gramin MobilePC.

Shady,

I bought my unit when it was launch in Hong Kong and I am in Malaysia so to me warranty not applicable in Malaysia. I am one of those "crazy" or "mad" old nerd with no other hobbies. biggrin.gif

Haha, true also. Yeah respect u cos take the risk to do that. Mthoto in EEE forum killed his 901 after doing touch screen mod but lucky your 901 survived smile.gif
I think 901 will be too slow for Vista. The 4GB SSD will be not enough even for nlited install.
*
mtotho in eeeuser killed his eeepc was not due to the initial modding. It was when he was rearranging his modding to be neater that he kill his eeepc due to an overload of certain line. I think he draw more that 500mA thus killing one of the power regulator making it unable to charge his battery. It can still work on battery power as he said.

He was actually success in modding a Touch Screen, an internal 3G and an internal USB hub. hehe... he now has a new 901 and did everything again. blink.gif so I am just a noob compare to him tongue.gif

Surprisingly he was able to sell most of the eeePC like the screen, case, power supply on ebay so I believe his loss is not that much.

I was too planning to mod an internal 3G but I think I will give that a rain check for the time being because I might have use for the 3G on other pc and on and off.

jackdon

P.S

WOW... just configure Mouseimp Pro to activate on Left Button Activate and now I can scroll up down and sideway in Opera..... thumbup.gif performs just like the iphone scroll except the bounce effect. rclxms.gif biggrin.gif

Hi,

Here I am sitting in the car waiting for my son's gym class. The Eee PC 901 on my lap, Maxis broadband surfing the net. The touch screen really helps with screen navigation. I must say this RM300/= and 2 hours of work upgrade is really worth it.

TOUCH SCREEN ROCKS rclxms.gif biggrin.gif

Now my weekly boring waits is no more BORING any more with this Eee PC 901.

Recoil,

I find that Garmin Mobile PC works well with any Bluetooth Device. If you want to use Garmin Nroute then you will need to install a GPSGate or GPS Proxy. Check out www.malsingmaps.com and read their Wiki very informative.

hmm.. if such small squeaking or whinning noise is ok,, then i'm fine lor.. hehe.. just worried on any overvoltage/heat that might lead to explosion...

as for AV, you're right.. i personally dont like AV running on my system.. it just slows down everything.

Hi Recoil,

I hardly use my charger because I made a cable and tap the +12 volt from my PC and it had been charging mine since. I would send the charge back for a replacement if I were you because it might be a fire hazard. I had charge mine a couple of times and do not hear any whinning noise. Yes it is pretty warm but no noise, we do not want a fire starter in the middle of the night when you leave it overnight. After all it should be still under warranty.

Better safe than sorry

Gosh, few subversions on the same motherboard revision? Now that misleading. Guess we'll have to open up the casing to find the answer. I think the 1.8" HDD solution is a better alternative if the price is not near RM350. Otherwise the 32GB for RM450 sounds reasonable because it also have 30GB of space and the performance is most likely faster including the advantages of a SSD. But I agree with you, SD cards are cheap and the non-invasive way of having more storage.

However, if users are using the Eee PC as designed I don't think upgrading the storage is ever required. Given internet/communication program does not require a lot of space and also the advent of Web2.0 applications, the default storage is actually pretty ok. User files can be saved on the SD card for utmost portability.
Well the Eee PC 701's resolution is lesser so you'll be doing a lot of horizontal left right scrolling. Not an enjoyable experience. Better aim for the Eee PC 901 or other alternatives with at least 1024 x 600 resolutions. The 1024 horizontal pixels is required because most web pages are designed to be viewed on a standard 15-17" 1024x768 resolution monitor.
*
Hi,

For those that want to do the ZIF HDD upgrade I would suggest that you find those 1.8" drive that are tested and confirm to run on the 901. I purchase a 30GB Hitachi 1.8" external drive that is ZIF base. I however was unable to install in to the 901 because the drive is fix as the master and the internal 4GB SSD is also the master. I have to take it out and put back the 8GB SSD and settle with a small external 30GB Storage which after a while is not too bad and I find it rather useful because I intend to store video files so that way I can copy from my main PC and just plug it in when needed plus the 1.8" external HDD is so small. So I think I will settle with that.

On another matter for those that is looking to install the touch screen I would suggest that you wait a while until the touch screen manufacturer update their drivers. It seems that the touch screen install on the 901 needs to be recalibrate very often. My installation looks fine and I am still investigating if it is the Bezel (the side LCD panel) are putting uneven pressure on the touch screen. Other than this issue the touch screen is a joy to work with.

Sorry to hear that. I thought 1.8" drives are cable-select.

Shady,

Actually I am not too sure because I went to upgrade the BIOS to version 1202 before I try to do the upgrade. I suspect this maybe the issue but I dare not downgrade it back to 901 which was about the time JKKmobile did the video on the ZIF upgrade.

May I know which version of BIOS you Eeepc was on before you send back for RMA.

if it requires pixel shader model 3 (DX9.0c) then no cos GMA950 supports up to PS2.0. Other than that everything looks good.

I was using 1101. Didnt know ASUS disable the IDE3 socket with BIOS 1202. Did u checkout EEEUser forum on bios 1202?

thanks bro. gonna wait for your good news then. Am so excited to have that cool thing put on my screen. So out standing with that FBI logo. Has anybody join your league to have a piece of that too?
Far better than that ISA, where got BOLEH? ...LoLz...

@ other bros

Come to KL to buy lah~ or ask trusted members to buy lah~ KL also not enough stocks so maybe due to this. Other area or states will be a bit late. If you guys buy at PC Fair now sure pricing is RM1749,the price so rigid due to high demand. 901 worth every of your penny. But you need time to adapt to its cramp keyboard or take Eee1000. 1000H can hear spinning sound one, same as MSI. Mayb jus a few unlucky one got d not so perfect machine. By d way, do not upgrade Bios if your machine is ok. Hahaha~
*
Yup dun fix it if it is not broken. I am now on BIOS ver 1202 for my 901. Thinking of downgrading to the one that came but forgot. Can u let me know what is the original BIOS version. I have some small issue on the ZIF HDD upgrade on my 901.

Hi,

Being a EeePC 901 owner I am very sure most of us are frustrated with the small keyboard but also how the keyboard felt like very flimsy when you type. The keyboard especially the middle of the keyboard seems to bounce up and down as we type and that makes us miss some character as we type.

Well I had come across a few fix from the eeeuser forum and tried and it actually works. Now my keyboard is solid as I type all this thanks to a small sheet of kitchen aluminium foil. The aluminium was choosen because the keyboard is also part of the cooling part and aluminium do fine. Just cut out a small sheet of foil and I fold it 3 times and just place it under the keyboard in the middle part and that just does the job.

Hico,

It should not, to open the keyboard there are 3 clips you push and the keyboard can be lifted up. Of cause unless you break something. Now the keyboard felt so SOLID.
