Anyone have any idea on what is a LSD gearbox? Coz recently when I wanna change gear oil and come across this terms. What is the kind of gear box for proton iswara LMST?

Also what is the difference between gear oil and manual transmission fluid?

LSD - limited slip differential

looks like this
user posted image

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_slip_differential

technically, it is jz a device installed inside ur gearbox/differential to limit the slip difference between left wheel n right wheel.... limiting the slip difference will hence increase traction out of a corner without spinning all ur power away...
LSD plays an important part in drifting (for FR cars)... LSD also works in FF cars, especially for those who frequent GRA or trackdays...

4g13/4g15 gearboxes doesnt come with LSD... but powerzone has custom LSD unit for these gearbox...

Thanks for the info. icon_idea.gif Do you mean that my iswara LMST is non LSD gearbox? and do my manual iswara LMST has differential fluid? coz I read an article stating that diffential fluid is found in rear-wheel car.

I see smile.gif Then I'll use the appropriate gear oil. Do you have idea about rear differential oil? Do you think Iswara got rear diffential oil? If yes, izit similar to gear oil?

not necessarily true. yes theres such a thing as LSD oil. BUT.....

my old B16A LSD gearbox have always used those cheapo generic gearbox oils from them big barrels. never had any issue whatsoever even with my almost nightly drag sessions and a few track sessions.

but keep in mind i change my gearbox oil every 10k km. and even then the oil still comes out clean.. always kena screw from mechanic for wasting money on the gearbox oil

iswara is front wheel drive....so no...u dont have to use the rear differential oil (mainly because u dont have a rear differential). just go to workshop and tell them u wanna change the gearbox oil and kowtim.

I found something. Have a look on it:

Transfer cases are found on four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. This gearbox divides the transmission power output between the rear differential and the front differential. Most transfer cases allow the front wheels to be disengaged and spin freely during normal driving conditions. When desired, power is transferred to all four wheels.
Transfer case fluid provides lubrication to gears, bearings, shafts, and other internal components. Heat, pressure and friction slowly breakdown the additives in the transfer case fluid. In addition, small particles of metal may come off the gears as they wear; these metal particles can mix with the fluid. Fluids can also become contaminated with water.

I think you better list down what oils you want to know about. You seem to be jumping from one oil to another.
If you actually took the initiative to at least Google it, you would've known within minutes.

Hopefully you don't come to "What is Gamat oil?" laugh.gif

there's some difference in oil grade.

yes, u can enter the tracks n play a few session, but any more den that, normal oil u will start to feel the gear starting to get jam.

higher grade oil can tahan heat better and let u go further without feeling of tat stiffness.

but again if u dont go tracking den u dont have to invest in those oil, they are quite exp..

standard LSD oil will do

sorry..I mean how much volume needed for the brake fluid and power steering fluid if change. Got people say need up to 5 liters just for the power steering fluid if flushing. Do you think flushing is neccessary or just usual change? My car is iswara 1.3.

just normal change is fine...

flushing is just to ensure that the fluids are new...do it like once a year or something...

ive had my kelisa for 4 years and ive never flushed any of my fluids (except radiator) before....and theyre all still running fine.

as for volume....usually sold per bottle for those fluids...so theyll charge u price per bottle. prices vary from shop to shop and brand to brand

I intend to change my iswara gear oil. When I came the shop they only sale GL 5 LSD gear oil 75w90. I wonder whether it fit into my gear box or not since iswara is a non LSD gear box, and I'm not sure about the GL requirement. I need your comment on this please!

This might be an old thread but I need to ask a few more question on Mitsu LSD:

(1) What are 1-way, 1.5-way, full-lock, semi-lock LSD?
(2) Does a full-lock LSD requires special drive shaft like a semi-lock (on F5M222 gearbox), or can we re-use normal drive shaft for F5M222

1 way lsd only engage during accelerating
1.5 way lsd, full engage during accelerating, 1/2 engage for braking
full lock lsd aka 2-way is engage all the time.

i'm not too familiar on mitshu GB. But for honda you need the LSD to be able fit into the final drive, thats all.

Would like to know how to tell if the LSD needs to be replaced since it's designed to wear & tear? What happens if the LSD starts to wear will it affect normal driving?

Also how to tell if the LSD is 1, 1.5 or Full Lock without looking at spec and opening up the gearbox?

Most cars like 350Z comes with how many ways?

FWD cars like iswara, wira have thier LSDs inside their gearboxes. technically speaking they gearboxes in FWD cars are called transaxles. vehicles with RWD have transmissions which has a shaft called propeller shaft linking it to the rear axle.

for FWDs the axle is built in, there for they use ATF.
but for RWDs they use two diff types of oils. ATF for transmission and axle oil for the rear axle.

The rear axle has different type of gears in it compared to the transmission. the gears are angled at a certain degree. this is called a hypoid gear. this ensure better contact and less wear between gears. but has produces a lot of heat. therefore the oil used for rear axles ar much thicker in viscosity to the ATF. the rear axle oil is actually called 'hypoid gear oil'

as for 'WHAT IS LSD'
the wikipedia tell u everything really. but for more info u shud check out howstuffworks.com. it has some nice animations there that will help u understand.
then u'll be able to tell the difference detween LSD 1.0/1.5 & 2.0

hope this helps. hit me back if u have any questions

So Proton cars have limited slip differentials huh? So high tech...

I think even new Hondas don't have them.

BTW wiki do they tell you how to tell between 1,1.5,full by checking the car? I mean i know what is 1, 1.5, full but possible to check without looking at spec or opening up the gear?

not all FWD cars have LSD... but most cars have open differential fitted to allow difference in left/right wheel movement.... for FWD, open differential is fitted inside the gearbox, linked directly to the final drive... but for RWD, open diff is located at the rear axle, driven by the main shaft dat runs thru the center of the car...

LSD is fitted in the open differential itself... what it does is it limits the slip difference between left n right shaft, depending types of LSD fitted...

ATF is automatic transmission fluid... manual gearbox dont use ATF... we use normal gear oil... there are special gear oil for LSD gearbox/axle....

correct me if wrong

Sry for bumping old thread.

My brother wanted to put LSD on his Honda Integra DA6 with B16A but his friend(also a mechanic) said that LSD will make his car heavier thus slower.

Not really. An LSD does add a slight penalty for weight and engagement time, but this is extremely negligible when compared to the same you save from being able to take corners far faster

LSD makes your car way faster in the corner, plus the negligible weight penalty is nothing. On the B series it does help acceleration in corners, although you must be vigilant in maintaining it too.

yes and no.... drive slowly around town and neighbourhood is abit of a headache... tyres refuses to spin or interlocks each other... slow drive will have annoying sound and free gear gliding thru corners are hard...

but in another view... if u drive ur car hard through corners, ur front end tuck in better compare to no LSD... LSD limits the slip of inner wheel by continuously tracking the outer wheel and gaining enough grip to exit a corner... hence, u get a faster time lap....

the noisy krak krak krak sounds only hapens when u install a 1.5 - 2 way lsd.

if u use a 1 way lsd it wont have tat noise; plus when u are making a u-turn; it feels exactly like a normal car with no lsd; it doesnt have the violent behaviour of a 1.5-2way lsd where ur steering auto counter pull itself n tat forceful KRAK KRAK noise and jerking ur whole entire dashboard cabin sweat.gif

One way L.S.D. specially suited for front wheel drive cars and 4WD car front axles.
Activates under acceleration, and acts as a true LSD when the throttle is off. A great chance for improved lap times.

1.5 way LSD
Activates under acceleration while the understeer is less than on the 2 way LSD.Recommended for drivers having difficulty with 2 way LSD understeer and one way LSD braking.

Two way LSD
Recommended on the rear axle for rear drive cars. Activates on both acceleration and deceleration. Recommended for those who
prefer hot driving action and big angle drift.

Guys,
I just installed a Mira L502 Auto JB-JL engine that came with a LSD gearbox in my kancil
During corners it does make the klunking sound. Mech says it'll eventually go off.
I'm kinda sceptical. How can this be solved?

Basically there's 3 settings for LSD.

1.Initial Torque
2.Acceleration
3.Deceleration

Play around with these 3 settings will improve you car cornering ability. Tuning them too high will result in Understeer characteristic though.

bump...

hi guys, i am using a L5 gearbox with LSD. the problem is when i move at low speed or corner at low speed, my car have the krak-krak noise, it is shaking my whole dashboard and i can feel the vibration through the steering wheel.

i wanna ask, what is the type of LSD used in L5 ? 1 way or 1.5 way or 2 way ? is it clutch-type lsd ?

thanks

Kinda normal for some LSD
Should be clutch plated one since it does this
You can improve this by adding in some friction modifier into your fluid
