Maybe u should take this to the winpwn 2.0.0.4 thread. What i suggest u do:

1. Re-download the stock ipsw from the link provided in sleepers.net.
2. Redo the custom ipsw. This time only pick this option .. Cydia+Installer(optional)+Youtube+Activate phone only(no need bootneuter).
3. Set the root partition to 550mb if you have cydia+installer. Set to 500mb if u only use cydia.
4. Remember to tick only activate phone in advance tab.

I would recommend Files than MobileFinder. To use Datacase, we need the desktop version to transfer files and it's only for Mac (sorry windows users). With Files, u can access the iphone thru wifi with FTP like transfer. U can turn on/off the features and it will remember the document state (zoom in or out or at a particular page) even after u close the app. For me MobileFinder is the cripple version from the one in 1.1.4 last time. This is because it have to adhere to the strict guidelines imposed by apple.

Just my 2 cents.

You've made a good point there BUT there's a few flaw in it.

1. The guys n gals at Genius bars do know more than us. Its THEIR JOB to know those stuff. They are PAID to face all those newbies with their silly questions. This is not the Genius bars and we are not paid to answer those silly questions. U can find the answers in the FAQ, Tips n Tricks, Read this first and many more.

2. Now the trends that get to our nerves (especially String) is dat those newbies are a hit-n-run type. They come, they ask (some stupid n silly Q) and they run away with no courtesy to close or reply back to the thread. This will make the forum so messy with repeated n open forum (targets for flames n spam). A forum is a place for knowledge sharing ... not knowledge leeching. Suddently there's an influx of new users in iphone forum asking the same question again n again. I think those sellers in LYP or other place knew about this forum and just ask their buyer to come here for the support so they can 'cuci tangan' when their customer got problem.

3. If they don't even read the "READ ME FIRST" stickied by mods, what makes you think they will read the rules n regulations.

Like yourself, i'm also not perfect but there's a level of tolerance that each one of us have. Strings is an outspoken person, he'll speak what he think is wrong and sometimes emotions do get to the best of us. We just need to forgive n forget. If the mods here could be more pro-active in weeding out the newbies that did not read or follow the rules then this situation can be avoided.

I understand what string feels, this forum is getting messy with question that should not be posted again n again. This forum is like a home to some of us and seeing it being flooded with those kind of question will surely get to our nerves. A lot of effort are put to stop this but its just being ignored by ignorant newbies.

Again lailaikatong ... this is not an attack towards u or the mods. This is just my personal views n opinion.

First you need US iTunes account then some store credit. U can get the credit from ebay, garage sales or if you want the physical gift card, u can go to Giant Kelana Jaya 1st floor Nokia booth. They sell itunes gift cards USD15 for RM50 there. I myself already bought 2 from the nice chap.

Sorry to hear about your phone. India's iPhone 3G is locked to the telco. They have a specially made firmware from Apple in the phone and even challenge hackers to crack their phone protection.

@Superman7
iPhone 3G from HK are unlocked OTB (Out of The Box). No need unlocking or anything. Just plugged in to itunes and activate.

Don't need serial no, IMEI or anything. Just the phone and iTunes. When plug in to iTunes, an activation screen will pop up and just click activate.

@fuiyo
The special firmware that i meant was only for iPhone from India. Its not the firmware that we download, its built in into the phone. The firmware that we download is the IPSW file.

What is your understanding of unlock, activate and jailbreaking? Maybe that will help in clearing things up. Seems like you are abit confuse with this.

Your understanding of the 3 term are almost correct.

Unlock - to enable the phone to use other that the intended telco.
Jailbreak - to open/hack the system so users can modify or access the filesystem.
Activate - to enable the phone from a 'locked' state i.e emergency call only to the springboard (where all the icons are). This 'locked' state is not the same as sim lock. Only after you activate that you can go to springboard.

Why we need to activate?

So that the phone will check whether we are using an authorize sim with the phone or not. If we are not using an authorize sim (lock phones), then we can get to the springboard and cant use the phone. We can only get to the emergency call part only.

OTB (Out of The Box) unlock iPhone still need to be activated so it can check the sim card if its valid. You might ask "Why it still need to check the sim if its already unlock and can accept any sim?". Well this is just a process that all iphone need to go thru, locked or unlocked.

This goes the same with locked phones. We need to jailbreak the phone first so that we can access the filesystem. Then we 'hacktivate' or activate the phone by tricking it with a spoof activation. This bypass the itunes checking and let us gain access to the springboard. Only after that we can unlock the phone (if a software unlock is available). So to a locked phone, the most important process to do is jailbreaking. With it we can do the activating and unlocking.

So in a nutshell

Unlock phone need to:
1. Activate thru iTunes only
2. Jailbreaking is optional if user want to use 3rd party apps
3. No need to unlock

Locked phone need to:
1. Jailbreak so we can gain access to the phone (mandatory)
2. Activate the phone thru 'hacktivation' or activation spoof (also mandatory)
3. Unlock the phone with a software unlocking sollution to use with other sim (also mandatory)

Added on September 7, 2008, 3:22 pmAnother thing that i missed out

Unlock phone can update/upgrade to any firmware without worry because it will remain unlock whereas locked phones have to wait for it to be able to jailbreak and if there is a baseband update, an unlock sollution must be present.

Hope you can understand my explanation.
