Apparently there is a version 2 for this cooler. Which has thinner seperators for the heatsink.
If u buy one, hopefully get the revised edition.
Personally i think i bought the old version. Which wasn't meant to be sold at all.
check out the contact surface for the ver2 achilles here.
Version 2 Achilles

Or i juz upload it here la. I hope the new version beats the copper pipes out of those other coolers.

imo althought the seperators are thinner, i dont think the performance will improve alot. maybe it will benefit AMD proc but i dont think this change much for Intel proc.

According to reviews, the new "s1284" is 2'c cooler. Not a whole lot more cooler and not worth the extra money over the s1283. If u overclock get s1284, it does better at higher temperatures. If not overclocking the s1283 is fine. The non-red scorpion got faster fan i heard, but louder.
IMO, all high end cooler not much different for normal end user.

imo normal user doesnt need cooler like this. before i started to overclock my proc, i find my intel HSF is more than enough to keep my proc cool. so i think cooler like s1283 is meant for overclocker. smile.gif

indeed the non-RS has higher RPM but it has been proven that higher cfm doesnt contribute much.

hi guys, I am using AMD platform. I'm facing a problem with this cooler now.
my cooler is installed to be pushing the heat upward. on top of it is my PSU, there is a top case fan but which's not located directly upward from my xigmatek achilles.

Then the problem now is when i am idle at default clock speed 2.5GHZ, my temp will get sometimes 52 for idle. If I overclock it to 2.8ghz, then the idle temp will be 53~55, then full load will up to 60 sometimes. Do u think there is anything wrong?

I tried remove the cooler, clean the grease and reapply again, ( this time I applied 4 lines of grease on the pipe instead of a dot on the CPU ), and turn around the fan, means the fan right now is pulling the heat down ward.. and my temp at default (2.5ghz) is 47~50, and full load can go to 55.. If I oc it, It'll be 50 at idle...

I've read other 9850BE users who's this cooler installed and they just got better result..

I need your opinion and solution, guys, please help..

my machine setup is like below:

AMD phenom 9850BE
Asus m3a32-mvp deluxe
mushkin 4gb ddr2 800mhz
sapphire 3870x2
acbel true power 550w with panel
lian li PC-007AIM with side fan full aluminum casing.

i think mayb its becoz of the hot air is trapped inside ur casing since ur cooler is facing ur psu..... sweat.gif

from wht i knw, if u installed ur cooler horizontally, it is better if u hv a casing with psu at the bottom n fan at the top of the casing for better air flow..... sweat.gif u cnt installed ur cooler vertically eh?

why not. if u cant put it vertically then u can put it horizontally so i dont see any problem with ur board.

try open case and see if ur temp improve. btw, are u using the the stock TIM?? if u are using stock TIM maybe its consider normal coz the stock TIM sucks but maybe they provide better now.

anyways there is lots of consideration that lead to high temp.
1. ambient temp
2. trap hot air
3. check ur HSF fan speed
4. did u screw the HSF tight enough? (if u are using SS kits)
5. so on.....

ps: i think ur temp is quite normal if there is less ventilation in ur casing

ham> Yup, ur right, with 88cfm fan the difference only 1'c.
haha... i think all of this is normal user heatsink. i personally think i'm pretty normal.
if really enthusiast, should go water cooling or n2o. hohoho. sounds fun tho.
now many people(those ppl who have interest in PC) with a decent computer will want to overclock. even i last time dun overclock, but if read processor review, sure got overclock segment already. alot of reviews for my processor say change the stock heatsink.
My pentium4 run heatsink is like aeroplane turbine. ppl come my house thot got aeroplane inside one. sighs.

Anyway, maybe some of u have already read this, the original s1283 is still the most "value for money" cooler.

If I could I would love to.
Yes,, my fan does has a back fan.
the problem is, this cooler put on
AMD platform could only face up or down. can't face backward..

how u apply the thermal paste is also a big factor..when i first bought this achilles 1284, i apply the stock thermal paste all around the cpu (my first time tongue.gif ) mayb the layer too thick or the stock thermal paste sucks...my cpu temperature becomes even higher than using the stock cpu cooler (around 45c idle)...i took it out yesterday..clean it and apply tx-2 compound just a dot (i mean quite a big dot tongue.gif ) on the cpu..and now my idle temperature is just around 37c..so damn big difference..

yes how u apply thermal paste is important but i think what kind of thermal paste more important. this actually has been proven here. on post 518

no matter how u apply the thermal paste just make sure that it is equally spread throughout the base surface.
