ok some of you already using a 7.1 receiver or planning to get one.

my question is will you really set up two pairs of surrounds? placement of current surround speakers is already pain in the butt so are you planning to add two more or already have added?

It's good to have a 7.1 system if you have a dedicated room for your home theater but if you like me using your living room than yeah its quite messy with all those speakers (especially the cables).

I'm getting the 7.1 Yamaha 663 once its here but I will keep my existing 5.1 setup. At least until I got myself a bluray player or maybe PS3 tongue.gif

It also depends on your software too. If say u did have plenty of dolby digital ex or dts ex software then better go for 7.1 hardware. I agree with arrimie that you shall consider for dedicated ht room to get the optimum effects. blush.gif

size of room is important too i guess...for small a room, how to make the sound spread rite with a 7.1

to me better stick to a good 5.1 than go for a lacklustre 7.1...

Well, 7.1 movies might be limited for the time being but the list will grow in the future. I have enough speakers to do 7.1, guess I need to shift my rear surrounds to the front a little, then put my surround backs to the back. I'm waiting for my new amp end of this month so I guess I can shift the speakers around first.

The difference is quite stunning with 7.1 material really. In Black Hawk Down BD you really feel like your in a war when the helicopter or bullets fly from the front to the middle, to the back in suck a way.

Love it, I was once doing 5.1, and with 7.1 gthere is a difference

fellas please read the question nicely and reply. i not asking good or not good. im asking do you have 7.1 speakers set up now or plan to in the future? or continue with 5.1 even if you have a 7.1 AVR

its a simple yes or no answer. no need give me grandmother stories about software availability, room size, rims w/o tires analogy, got difference or no difference, etc

thank you

Black Hawk Down BD is actually in PCM 5.1 so are you using Dolby Pro Logic IIx to get 7.1 (matrixed)?

If you need to setup a new HT, might as well get it ready for 7.1. Most receiver will be able to matrix 5.1 to 7.1 to provide more ambience surround sound. If you have 2 rows of seat, it is compulsory to get good surround sound.

I'm currently on 6.1, the 7th speaker is on its way!

Hope to have 7.1 by this weekend. biggrin.gif

Well, about the room size, I think it's more about the speaker size, not the speaker count.

You can still enjoy 7.1 in small room, just use small ones for the surrounds and calibrate correctly.

not suitable for high-power AVR and speakers cause difficult to position sound movement

actually if using powerful AVR and speakers ... 5.1 setup already unspeakable ... don't need 7.1 ... unless you have a very big room

I tried Pioneer most advanced EX Speaker series with AVR LX-70 ... 5.1 setup only ... in around 20'x25' room ... the sound quality unbelievable ... the speaker itself cost >100k and front speaker each weight around 45kg ... so I don't think need 7.1 in this case

If I had the 100k, I would rather buy top model B&W 800 series than Pioneer.

With all due respect, the words Pioneer and High End don't go together in my mind. Now I don't doubt they have some serious shit, but the problem is they have too much mass market stuff around.

I think 801D should still be less than 100k.

800D should be in the region of 100k or slightly above.

What I meant was no matter what high end products they produce, their mass market products bearing their same brand name cheapens their appeal somewhat.

For the same price, I can go for true high end brands, even if for no other reason than snob appeal. Which sounds better?

Go to Monsoon on Jalan Maarof Bangsar and try speakers like the B&W800D. But beware, they're quite a LCLY bunch.

But I must admit that B&W also have some lower end stuff, so they also cannot be considered exclusively high end. Brands like Wilson Audio not so easy to check out here. Megatron may like their stuff... their speakers look like Transformers.

To YAMAHA owners..

Some Yammy AV amp has front presence speaker output.. But if u use presence speaker jack, then u cant use side surround speaker..

So, which one will u choose to use?
*
not side surrounds. but rear surrounds.

presence speaker output is in conjunction of yamaha DSP program. yamaha DSP program ranging from movie watching, sports, entertainment, concert listening, hall, and so forth. the main idea is to get listener to 'feel' the scene when DSP program is activated. you could read more in google.

so to further enhance this DSP program, here comes the presence speaker into place. but lower end yamaha cant output presence channel + actual surrounds all together in one time.

so to answer your question, to use front or surround back, it depends on the media itself. i oftenly use front presence if i listen to music and concerts, coz i could use the dialog lift effects. Also when listening to music, u could use the theater program whereby it will somehow makes the sound like u in this particular theater. e.g roxy theater and so forth. And also, all the reverb, echos, surround effect can be further exploit if u use presence.

for movie playback, i always use rear surround for full motion effects. dont wanna alter anything coz u might end up losing some effects from the actual studio master.

only RX-Z11 able in outputting all 11.2 discrete, including front presence & rear presence. so u got mind blowing true 11.2 surround around ur asses! smile.gif

As per question in the thread.

I will not go for 7.1, too many speakers and a b*tch to setup. Unless can sufficiently hide all the wires.

In addition, not much support for it be it for PC or for a hometheatre setup.

I'll stick with either my Logitech Z5500 and my dad's Klipsch 5.1 system at home.

Cheers

taken from yamaha website:

QUOTE
Quad-Field and Tri-Field CINEMA DSP
Tri-Field CINEMA DSP projects three sound fields into the home theater: a Presence sound field in the front and two Surround sound fields in the left surround and right surround, resulting in a powerfully realistic three-dimensional soundscape. And now Yamaha also offers Quad-Field CINEMA DSP. It adds an additional surround back sound field to the Tri-Field system, in order to enjoy the new 6.1-channel formats, Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES.

If like the way Yamaha explains it, I wouldn't consider it 11.2 discrete. In my opinion, discrete means every one of those 11 channels gets a unique signal.

i dunno abt unique, but its add some effects on the channel. how to say, like when helicopter scene, where the sound is from front to back, this presence will act as continuation after front channel before surround channel. tested it myself.

means not discrete?

Perhaps it's like delay the signal then. I'm no expert also but discrete means unique, whereas this receiver seems to be doing is using one of the original 5 or 7 channels, and manipulating it somewhat before sending it to the additional channels. That is not discrete. Those 11 channels can't be discrete unless the disc's audio is recorded with 11 discrete channels, and we all know that there is no such thing.

Ya, I think it won't be night and day difference also. Just fill in the gaps intelligently only, so to speak. Not unlike how an upscaler fills in the blanks by looking at the original pixels beside it, and then making a best guess as to what it should be.

hm, speaking of an upscaler,

when i play a scene e.g beach scene, my front presence speaker adds somehing like the water splashing sound into the surrounds. when compare to presence speaker off, with presence channel, the beach scene gets more fuller and deeper.

is it consider discrete as well?

Every record shop also can buy SACDs. Usually they place them in the Audiophile section.

Really? Never saw any before, maybe have to look harder.

The only SACD I have is "Greatest Film Fantasies" by Erich Kunzel. Hybrid one, and got both stereo and multi-channel audio. thumbup.gif

Thanks to my 80GB PS3, I never listened to SACD before. Sound really nice. Any recommended SACDs? But I'm not into jazz maybe symphony orchestra will do, or any pop artist.

just remember when ripping SACD to your PS3... it'll only rip the CD section (if hybrid disc)..

No offense. Saying it is easy when you have the moolah to splurge on it. For average Joe, it takes a lot of months or years of saving to get a 'decent' setup from there. sweat.gif

Years back, I was so impressed with the B&W 600 series speakers package that went for a song. But, due to peasant's income, just could only dream of it

It's not 30k for the 600 series lah. Siao ah?

30k can buy 2 pairs of 805s plus the center speaker already. But not enough for the sub.

Smallest of the 800 series range is the 805s bookshelf speakers. About RM10k per pair. Add another pair for the rear makes it RM20k. The HTM3S center is also about RM10k, if I'm not mistaken. So RM30k for the 5 speakers.

You can confirm that at Monsoon if you go there this weekend.

http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/display.aspx?infid=818&sc=ht

If you don't want to spend so much, the Dali Ikon 6 speaker package is also very good. That one should be able to get 5.1 for about RM15k. Can check them out in City Square.

KEF iQ series is quite good but thanks to (u know who lah), the price is rather high here.

If elite speakers, try ATC, Wilson Benesch speakers, and mbl.

Just now went to Desa HT at Lowyat, just asking the fella on the Yamaha 3800 pricing. He mentioned better get Marantz 8002. The Marantz is 1k more exp than Yamaha 3800 and way better.

Anyone experienced using Marantz before? I though they are only good in hifi and not AV amp.

Before I just put on a stand at about sitting ear height, but I just kept wondering about why the 1800 manual saying I should put the surround speakers at 1.8 meters.

So I tried, all my 4 surround and surround back speakers are now mounted on the wall at 1.8 meters. Only the front speakers around at the TV height, and the centre speaker at it's usual place. Make sure the sub is not facing directly to the wall, must have some angle to allow the sound to travel around the room.

You guys should try it. The surround effect is much much more lively & realistic, sound image more accurate. It's really a lot more enveloping, which is also really good when you listen to music, especially those 5.1 concerts.

Well, I would not say "should not be" at ear level, it's still up to everyone's own listening taste, but you can try it.

It's just that I read it on my receiver's manual, so I tried it, and now I'm loving it. thumbup.gif

My living room is small, I only use small satellite speakers for the surround and surround back so I can still have 7.1 setup without crowding it too much with big speakers. I'm not much into powerful setup, I only use Diamond 9.1 as my fronts. I also like listening to stereo music too, and the 9.1 is just simply superb. thumbup.gif

When it sounds good on music, it will be good on movies too, but not necessarily the other way around I think.

i think my small room is getting high surround treatment soon. planning to go for 7.1 / Surround speaker should not be at the eye level lah. it should be slightly above your head. u going to be pekak if u put it at ear level. also depending on the distance. satellite speaker adjust high above the ear height.

do u guys think its alright to put my Neo(side) and Wharfedale (rear)as surround together? im afraid the mixture will spoil the Neo accoustic.

speaker air port at the back ... you need to do sound acoustic treatment on the wall behind it ... otherwise the whole HT setup 75% failed already smile.gif

My living room is only 16x12'. Yet I have 7.1 setup.

If you can hear each directional sound from all different 4 surround speakers, then your room should be qualified to have 7.1. I've been watching 3:10 to Yuma twice since I have the 7.1 setup, and I can hear gunshots and ricochets from every single speakers in the back.

Room size rule is true for ambience, effects, etc. For that, with small room, 5.1 is enough. But for 7.1 discrete directional track, increasingly provided in blu-ray movies/concerts lately, try to have 7.1, maybe using small satellite speakers. If not, the 7.1 will be downmixed to 5.1, and you won't be listening as intended by the filmmaker.

Anyway, my own rules still means my own opinion, everyone has their own preference.

This is my current setup:

user posted image

Except my LFE is on the right. The distance between my surround back channels is 5'.

What I meant was, if you have a rectangular room, it is up to you to place your system with speakers firing down the longer length of the room. It is no drama if your "length" is actually shorter than your "width", because then you just consider your "width" as the "length" lah.

But if you have windows or doors on the shorter wall, then you're going to run into some difficulties placing your speakers or projector screen there.

IMHO, if you have your front/side/rear speakers placed so near to each other, you just have all these sounds clashing with each other. Sort of one big jumble/rojak of sound, so to speak. So perhaps you'll have even more difficulty hearing the steering and panning effects.

I feel that there should not be too much overlapping of the range of each speaker. So where the sound of one speaker ends should be where the sound from the next speaker begins, with only a slight overlap, if you get what I mean.

Imagine if you had Digitalkl's 20ft length, then when a spaceship flies from front to the back, you should clearly hear the sound go from front speaker, then side speaker, then rear speaker, with a large enough delay between each speaker for it to make sense.

But if you have 10ft length only, due to the proximity of the speakers, you'll almost be hearing the sound come from all the speakers at the same time, so yeah, it's gonna be abit messed up as you say. At least if you only have front and rear speakers, you'll have a bigger distance between the speakers to better simulate the movement of the spaceship from front to back.

Hope that didn't confuse you more.

I never have that problem. Never. Any of you guys already tried or not? To me if your room lentgh is too big, it won't be realistic already. The most important is that the sound image travels to your back surround, meaning just behind you, not all the way to the kitchen!

I don't have a dedicated room, so doors will have to be compromised. Here's my actual layout:

The white box is where I lie down to watch movies (I like to lie down). The door in the back actually just an opening with curtains that I closes when I watch movies.

my room is small 15ft x 7ft..

i able to enjoy full 7.1 surrounds with no clashing what so ever... it depends on your amp avr configuration smile.gif

calibrate your speakers level using SPL meter.. and u r set.

and another thing, your room acoustics play important role. if got quite diffuser and bass trap to level the sound in the room. gonna add more absorbent later on.

in my case, smaller room, the sound gets more focus.

Ya, with Theta Casablanca MK III and Six-Shooter, plus Klipsch reference speakers, individual tweeters, as well as 8 subs, like Kipnis Home theater, Don't forget the 16 Macintosh Monoblocks.

Of course you need the 16' wide SmX 2.35 with a Sim2 HT5000 dual lamp setup, you'll get around 20-22fl! Only the best lens, so we use ISCO III

Damn son, that's gotta be one heck of a room.

When there are movies encoded in 7.1 format, then the urge to have 7.1 kicks in (if have ample space). For me, will go for 7.1 straight after I upgrade my AVR.
