Intel inside Green Packet for RM50 million QUOTE KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 World chip giant Intel will ink a deal in Kuala Lumpur today to provide RM50 million in its latest WiMax-capable Montevina chips and accessories to Malaysia's wireless technology solutions provider Green Packet Berhad. Green Packet, listed in on the Bursa Malaysia, will be among the first to launch WiMax, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, in Malaysia next month through subsidiary Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1). Intel chairman Datuk Craig Barret will sign the agreement this afternoon at the World Congress of Information Technology (WCIT) which began at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. The Malaysian Insider learnt that under the deal, Intel will provide Green Packet with the Montevina chips - which has optional embedded dual-mode Wi-Fi and WiMax connections. The chip's processors will have speeds ranging between 2.26GHz and 2.8GHz and are officially due in next month. A slew of manufacturers have already announced WiMax-capable devices, including Nokia with its N810 Tablet, Kyocera with a WiMax dongle and Motorola with WiMax-enabled handsets using chips from Texas Instruments. WiMax, also known as IEEE 802.16, is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks". WiMax can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3-10 miles (5-15 km) for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 wireless local area network standard is limited in most cases to only 100-300 feet (30-100m). P1 is set to deploy 1,500 WiFi hotspots in Kuala Lumpur by end May 2008 to mark the start of Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and Suruhanjaya Komunikasi Multimedia Malaysia's (SKMM) "KL Wireless Metropolitan Project" aimed at making Kuala Lumpur a world class wireless city by 2009. Aside from offering free 512Kbps broadband connectivity for KLites and tourists for 2 years when fully deployed, the project hopes to help boost tourism, economic capabilities and social and education opportunities for the city. Source So, the wireless kl project is not WIMAX. |

Yes, Wimax will be officially launch in June according to an article in Starbiz today. Here some info that I got from there.
1) GP (Green Packet) target to cover more than 25% of the population by the end of this year. 2) They will start offering Wimax service start at 1 to 2Mbps but can go up to 6/7 Mbps. 3) When they launch in June, connectivity would likely come with voice. 4) Wimax to mobile phones is projected to be launch in two or three years. 5) Target to have 50,000 to 80,000 subscriber by year end. 200,000 by end of 2009. 6) ARPU (average revenue per user) of RM70 because its comprise of both enterprise and home user. That is for connectivity. Expect extra RM30 ARPU for voice communication. |

google: wimax
Disadvantages WIMAX: 1) Line of site is needed for longer connections 2) Weather conditions like rain could interrupt the signal. 3) 0ther wireless equipment could cause interference. 4) Multiplied frequencies are used. 5) WiMAX is very power intensive technology and requires strong electrical support. 6) Big installation and operational coast. |

QUOTE(Calvin871989 @ May 19 2008, 11:37 PM) basically u could call it wireless broadband. the speed is impressive at least could rival what streamyx could offer or more. the other advantage are mobility. the disadvantage is the cost for user setup (maybe for average user) and there's issue on QoS during transmission. Since it is wireless, the bandwidth quality may suffer. For Download and Surfing its okay but i doubt its okay for online game such as DOTA. . but i may be wrong, finger cross. |

QUOTE(tolong_saye @ May 19 2008, 10:20 PM) They will start with 1/2Mbps package. If needed, in the future, there will be packages up to 7MbpsQUOTE(yangxi @ May 19 2008, 11:28 PM) Where is that? As far as I know, they claimed they will be able to cover 25% of the population which is main cities from Perlis/Kedah to Johor Bharu.QUOTE(yangxi @ May 19 2008, 11:38 PM) google: wimax From what I read, they claim that the whole cost for Wimax is still cheaper than 3G. But I guess that is wimax and 3G going to cover the whole population.Disadvantages WIMAX: 1) Line of site is needed for longer connections 2) Weather conditions like rain could interrupt the signal. 3) 0ther wireless equipment could cause interference. 4) Multiplied frequencies are used. 5) WiMAX is very power intensive technology and requires strong electrical support. 6) Big installation and operational coast. Since their ARPU is rm70, I guess their initial pricing will be more or less the same as normal Streamyx pricing (Not the combo package) |

here are some shots of the WiMAX devices that P1 will offer.
(First Generation WiMAX 2.3 Ghz modem) (USB WiMAX 2.3 Ghz modem) The first device above is slightly big, but it looks nice, and requires power to operate. The USB modem is very small, as small as the Vodafone Mobile Connect USB Stick launched by Celcom recently for enterprise users. Speed offering will be somewhere between 1Mbps to 2Mbps where it will be priced below RM100 around RM80 per month. Lower speed packages are also expected to be available. As you guys may have known, rumors says P1 will launch WiMAX by end of this month. |
