exactly my point. even for a simple Windows XP update (upon fresh install) takes over 250MB, and that is only the first update. consequent updates are easily around 50MB.The last L4D update was 120 megs, TF2 had a 140 meg update.

simply put, Maxis is actually BS-ing you when they claim that have conducted a survey and the average usage is 3GB. loads of bull crap in this IT age, when everything is available online, but with Maxis, they expect you to only know about, but dont touch it, click it, or use it. see only, no touchy touchy.
the average user (in Maxis term) are ppl from stone age who just gotten a pc.
