yeah! i thought that was the scariest scene too... if you like Guillermo del Toro, try checking out Devil's Backbone. I got hooked on his stuff ever since Blade II. haha. yeah, love that movie. I think Pan's Labyrinth's his best work yet. it's like this.... » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « accidental. he kept banging on the door (the noise his mom heard at night), slipped, crashed over the side down to the floor... yup, steel bars fell when she opened the door, she picked it up n pushed it back and that somehow blocked/jammed the door. it's all there in the movie. no hidden plot or anything. No lah.. El Orfanato is not directed by Guilermo Del Toro. He's the producer. I guess the unofficial/un-related trilogy would be Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth and 3993 (2009 release) since their all set sometime around the Spanish civil war(?). I agree, Devil's Backbone is not that creepy but still entertaining.  There's always Amazon.com brader! Plan to order Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth..
