Hello, I have the first Gen Xbox and I thik it might be a good idea just to keep it as a DVD player or something.
So here it is, I only have the standard composite cables that came with it. So I was thinking in what way can I maximise the picture quality out of the Xbox, is there a HD pack somewhere I can buy for it? I'm using an LCD TV BTW.

Microsoft released the HD AV pack for the Xbox, along with the advanced AV pack during its lifetime. The advanced AV pack was basically an S-Video cable. The HD AV pack was probably an industry first. From day one, gamers with HD ready televisions could make use of the increased picture quality. The pack supports 480p, 720p and 1080i.
Although the PS2 also had a component AV cable, not many games supported progressive scan. Though some gamers might poo-poo the idea at the time, there's no denying the impact good visuals can have on gaming. I know I enjoyed it! I don't think you can find the official Microsoft pack anymore, but you can still find 3rd party brands around. Although even they're not common anymore.

I actually bought my Microsoft HD AV pack from Singapore a long time ago. And yes, it did make the difference when playing on a hi-def LCD.
You might still be able to find it in Singapore, as Microsoft's presence there was very strong.

I'll try and find it here, I think i still see the old Xbox on sale here, I'll see if they have the cable for it. Also, that HD AV pack, how much did they cost in Singapore dollars? EDIT: Scratch that(not the above question), can it even play HD DVD movie? This post has been edited by tunertoobe: Mar 7 2008, 10:29 PM

I'm still using the Xbox for my media player, modded of course, to install XBMC. I'm using the Advanced AV Pack (Component + Optical), and if you couple it with an LCD TV, if I'm not mistaken, XBMC upscales video to 1080i. Anyhow, the xbox is not capable of playing HD rips, let alone HD DVD

Seems like so much work. Modding my ori Xbox, installing XMBC, getting the HD AV pack. But would be a lot cheaper than buying a RM400+ DVD player which does the same thing.

Yups, will consider an HD-DVD player. Just that the Xbox has some kinda sentimental value to it. I love it. I won't be at my home for very long, studying and all that, and it would be good to leave it to my parents to watch DVDs. And my cousins love the games and if they come over, I got something to entertain them with. I won't leave a 360 in the house without me around.

Yeah I got mine for my 2nd box from ebay also (3rd party knock-off). Been searching hi-lo for the item locally and on this forum. I use both the old xboxes exclusively as media players, it plays everything under the sun except for HD content (sadly). The irony is that I bought the 2nd xbox for RM200 and the HD cables costs me about RM60 (it's not even an original from MS or from branded names)- that's more than 1/4 of the price I paid for the box iteself This post has been edited by zainframe: Mar 9 2008, 09:20 PM
