I've got a Norman Acoustic that I've been playing for about a year now. Hoping to get an electric this time around. Been playing off and on, for the past 10 years, only started playing consistently for the past year.

I'm looking to get a new Electric guitar (together with Amp) and everything. My Budget is 2k (although I'm looking to spend 1.8k ONLY) haha smile.gif

Wonder what guitar/amp setup I should, I want something higher than entry level, but can't afford the really good stuff. So I guess Low to Mid-Range would be my best bet.

I'll probably be playing mostly bluesy stuff, but want my setup to rock when I need it to. So I want my amp to be able to produce bluesy-rock kinda sounds. Not performing , so a small wattage is all I require.

I'm looking at Godins, I think SD retail for aroun 1.6k which make it out of my budget. What would be a good Ibanez in that price range?

Input would be greatly appreciated.

Bluesy? Warm? Vox AD series best bet.
Shouldn't be too steep, I don't know the exact prices though, I guess the AD30VT should go bout 500?
Leaves you bout 1.3k for the guitar

And with that 1.3k, get an Ibanez SA..... Very versatile and of good quality.
Or, you could just buy a Yamaha Pacifica for around 650 if you prefer the Strat sound.

Alright, seems like Ibanez SA and Samick Avion has votes:

Just 2 questions bout the Avion:

1) Where do I buy one? I checked out and only Do re Mi and Rhapsody have them..anywhere else?

2) How come the reviews have the Samick Avion retailing for 300USD, but they sell here for about Rm700? ....that sounds a bit dodgy to me...

Not dodgy, maybe because AV3 from Indonesia, so we save on the shipping rates.

Do try one at Doremi. Rhapsody is more expensive, I believe. The Avion will have a chunkier neck than the Ibanez, so it really depends on whether you're a blues player or a shredder...

the A is a tremolo bar...
which enable the player to quickly vary the tension and sometimes the length of the strings temporarily, changing the pitch to create a vibrato, portamento or pitch bend effect.(copied frm wiki tongue.gif)

and the B is a pickup selector..

Personally, I think whammy bars are overrated, and they're not advisable on lower end guitars since they go out of tune easily after use, from what I heard lah.

My friend said if wanna get a guitar with a whammy bar, get one with a locking system, like a floyd-rose or something, yes a b**** to tune but it stays in tune better when you use it.

But the problem is, a guitar with a properly working whammy bar system that stays in tune costs way more, in the 4 figure range. Those bridges alone cost more than my whole guitar, almost twice the price!

My cheap squier's whammy, I seldom use, and even then I've already messed it up and caused the screws to strip inside, but luckily managed to get it out. If it breaks inside, I would have to spend a lot of money to get a new bridge, maybe 3 figure sums.

A slight 'bent' with the whammy bar when you use it enough of times, would cause it to strip the screw holes inside and you might never be able take the whammy bar out again, without grinding and getting stuck halfway out. At least get one that does not screw in like the typical strat, it really sucks!

For simplicity sake, I think I should've bought a guitar with a fixed bridge instead.

But never mind, I locked down my bridge already, so all's fine there.

but then again there's a great advantage in getting a guitar with a whammy bar. you can remove it and achieve shredding speed!!!!!!!11

It's funny. I started off with a crappy vintage trem, decided I had enough of it and then progressed to 2 fixed bridge Les Pauls. Then I decided I WANTED a FR system and got a RR3 with a Licenced FR, and now the guitar I'm lusting after (The Egen) has another trem......

My Fixed bridge guitars are probably going to be LPs only from now on...... I find although hard to change strings, you get used to it and find that the whammy can Really pull off some killer tricks.

I'm always afraid of whammy bar. Scared my hand got jam between the bridge or something silly like that. lol.

To TS, like dilin said, you can't go wrong with the av3 if you like blues. They have good pickups but with your budget you can install better ones from Dimarzios or SDs. They're pretty shred-able too, for a les paul copy it has one of the thinnest neck.

Floating means that the bridge is not screwed down to the body of the guitar. Instead it is held floating/balanced/pivots at the bridge studs. It balances the tension of the string with the springs it has underneath.

A strat synronized tremolo is not actually floating per se because it only allows diving but not pull-ups. A true floating bridge will allow you to do both - floyd-rose trems typically.

Of course, a true floating bridge system will also come with the locking-nut set so that you can clamp down the strings after tuning to keep them in tune.

That's quite true. Tuning a floyd rose can be a real chore esp when the strings are new and you have to spend at least an hour or so to stretch them out, retune, stretch retune until you get it. Even then intonating them is tough also give nthe floating nature ofthe bridge. Also some say floating bridges kill sustain; not sure about this. Playing unison bends is also a challenge, you will need to really use your ears because the bridge will angle forward whenever you bend a string; and when you are in a gig/performance, just pray that your strings dun break midway or something happens that throw your tuning out of whack. It's gonna take a while to retune them back smile.gif

Somethigns that one would need to consider before purchasing a floyd-rose guitar.

Not sure about the different trems out there, so far Ive only tried the LoTRS on my RG. I'm sure the higher-end Edges, Edge-Pro trems would be way a lot better than mine. smile.gif

^+1

edge III tends to break easily if you abused them too much.. go for a prestige model if you're into floyd rose guitars... any guitars which is rg550 and above will do..

I know this thread has been dead for a while.

But since I started it, just want to update that I bought the Samick Avion Av3, it's not the best guitar in the world, but for the price, it's hard to find a anything better.

It's WAAAY better than the cheap Epis. Much better than the 1K + epiphone I tried anyway.

Thanks, now all I need to setup this thing.

Maybe change the pickups and buy a new cable, cause I'm already getting some background noise.

Do Re Mi, in Jalan Ipoh KL.

It's listed for RM795, I didn't really bargain, got it only slightly cheaper.

In the end, all I got was a cable and some picks for the list price.

In the end though, I recommend the shop, the service was good. The pickguard on the guitar was loose, the fixed it backed nicely. No complains about the service , plus the atmosphere and stock in the shop make it really nice place to get a guitar. I manage to test it with the microcube, which is the same amp I got at home.

There is a guy selling this on ebay, pm me if you want the contact. He's selling for RM690, but I needed to test the guitar before I bought it.

Now I'm getting a soft hum when the guitar is plugged in, I don't know if it's the cable/guitar or amp. BUt it's getting annoying, especially with the gain set to higher settings, the HUM is REALLY annoying.

I'm not that good a guitarist, or know much. But I liked the AV3 Microcube combination, altogether you can get them for around RM1.1K.
