no more competition in HD
isnt this a bad news for us?

Huh? It's good for us consumers. Now all the studios will produce only on Blu-ray and this will certainly lower their production cost and ultimately, the discs themselves. Also, more hardware manufacturers will not have a headache of which way they should go, and now that they are certain, they can ramp up production knowing that consumers that want HD will go for Blu-ray no matter what.

This solve a hell lot of headache than create them...and the headache would only be: will I want a 40GB PS3 or a 80GB PS3? Or wait for future SKUs? Sony wins this time...their strategy finally pays off. Ken Kutaragi should be really proud.

maybe microsoft would come up with Blu-Ray drive for XBOX laugh.gif

Also, note that since PS3 helped them win this war, Sony is going to have a jolly good time selling PS3 since it is the cheapest Blu-ray player. So...thing's going good for Sony this year?

It's the cheapest right now because it's mad subsidized. Once things reach a steady state, standalone players will be cheaper.

it's good that the format war ended up much earlier
there's never been good to consumers to have format war
btw this time, Sony 2 : 0 DVD consortium tongue.gif

they sort of lose up when Sony founded the DVD RW association, that DVD+R format has deemed better than the original DVD-R

I read somewhere in the news yesterday that Sony sold Blu-Ray factories to Toshiba.

Also that the DVD format wars caused both parties a lot of funds.

Anyway, hopefully BluRay will be standardized soon enough. Frankly, I don't even mind the quality of the old DVD9, as I still watch them on my old 39 inch CRT TV and my 19inch LCD monitor which will be 22-24inch LCD monitor 2009 or 2010.

Cheers

Well, so will this be the end of Xbox 360 as well?

My opinion, Sony killed three birds with one stone
1) format war (BluRay vs HD DVD)
2) console war (PS3 vs Xbox 360)
3) revenge (they lost previously, Betamax vs VHS)

The 360 is already been long in production to be killed off that easily. Gaming studios has committed to making games for it, thus it won't die, not in a long shot. Heck, I'd see it still outsells the PS3 for a while as the HD-DVD is not a standard for it, just as an Add On.ah well, sad to see bluegay won, and I doubt we will use it for the PC in the next 4 years unless softwares starts to sell in that format, which I doubt as not many uses that much space anyways, and ppl are nao being comfortable with just downloading the software you want and just buy the serial key online

And in another news, Sony gives Toshiba something in return for its trouble: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=10826

No wonder Sony didn't comment on HD-DVD's defeat...
