How long does it take for your computer to load windows (after it's completely shut down)?
From the moment you push the power button until every startup program/process is loaded.

Also, post your computer specifications.

Mine takes like 50 seconds.

Can you tell me what affects the boot time?
Do the processor speed and the amount of RAM affect it?

ur computer spec will not affect much. The increase of loading time is mainly due to the number of startup program that u set to load. Load program as min as possible and ur load time will be fine.

Yup, agree with u...

The startup program determine the boot up speed...

having additional RAM and fast processors do help, my bro's PC can boot into Vista within seconds

Anything more than 2GB no difference after that. I dun believe ur bro's VISTA is faster, it's probably just doesn't have much startup srvices and program install. I've dual boot VISTA and XP on my PC.

I say this is all quite pointless coz you'll never know how many startup services or programs everyone has to do an actual comparison.

IMO, the best bet is to wait for those SSD HDD. The HDD is the greatest bottleneck now.

kekeke..you might be right about that as some of those softwares you mentioned are indeed bloated and heavy which could slow down your boot time like zonealarm and vmware..

i dont have these 2 programs in my windows actualy. i just use xp's built in firewall but note that it's will not filter out your outbound traffic though (your pc to network/internet) since it's been designed to only block/allow inbound/incoming traffic (network/internet to your pc) blehh..i dont really care. laugh.gif

and about virtual machine, my choice is virtualbox since it doesnt install so many services that have to be always running in the background. Tried vmware before but didnt like it much because of dozens of services it installed but this program undeniabley one of the great vm machine programs out there *thumbs up*

(when it comes to free vm machine, virtualbox is always the winner) *wink*

Decrease you mean?

Well, if you have tons of it, Windows have to search for the folder Desktop and show it on Desktop (duh!). If there's nothing to show then there is some spare time for something else to load.

It's not obvious, but it's there.

Just disable those unwanted startups like what i do.Many softwares inject startups that are very unnecessary.Take for example "adobe photoshop picture detection",runs in the background but eats up lots of ram.

if i'm not mistaken, ms office takes quite a bit or processor juice..

Desktop icons eat ur RAM,so it took a time for ur ram to be respond.why?Icons is based on GUI.

U can try some tweaks for fast boot, faster shutdown, increase startup time by referring on other sites.

Disable prefecth can give some performance. If u using WinXP,u could use XP tool/XP tweak and etc..
which can give whatever u want, but not at all. biggrin.gif

There are many factors that affect loading time:

Operating System: Vista generally boots faster than XP because Vista has some new technologies that help decrease boot time.

Startup Programs: If you have plenty of startup programs, this will definitely slow down your pc as it needs to load all those programs. Ask yourself honestly, are you going to use the program frequently? If not, just disable the programs that you don't want to use. Another note: Norton AV = Resource Hog

BIOS: Depending on which BIOS you use and it's version, the load time of your pc may vary.

Fragmentation of Files: Quote from Wikipedia

QUOTE
files in a file system are usually managed in units called blocks or clusters. When a file system is created, there is free space to store file blocks together contiguously. This allows for rapid sequential file reads and writes. However, as files are added, removed, and changed in size, the free space becomes externally fragmented, leaving only small holes in which to place new data. When a new file is written, or when an existing file is extended, the new data blocks are necessarily scattered, slowing access due to seek time and rotational delay of the read/write head, and incurring additional overhead to manage additional locations. This is called file system fragmentation.

File fragmentation will affect the speed of which the pc boots. Be sure to use a defragmentation utility from time to time in order to speed up your pc boot times. Do not use the built in disk defragmenter as it is quite unreliable in my opinion.

Viruses: Naturally, viruses can cause damages in many aspects such as internet connection speed and disabling certain programs. Some viruses can also slow down pc boot time because it needs to load in order to perform malicious tasks.

Care to rephrase that as it doesn't make sense? rclxub.gif It takes me 1 minute from cold boot for XP. Cold boot:
Power off -> Power on -> Login (Automatic login).

my recommendations...
just let a daily program use to be load at startup,
if u hav a prog that u didnt use much, just disable it from startup...

u know ur comp better than others...
just do what u think is right...

1-2minutes i guess...need to detect 1 ide hdd, 1 sata hdd, memory card reader and webcam. the ide makes it boot really slow, previously less than 1minutes.

it seems dat if i'm using vista inspirat 2, the boot time will be much faster.
and if i'm going to shutdown, it's also faster than using normal xp.
i'm not doing any timing but i have the feeling it's way faster than xp.

mine only 15-20 seconds..
for fast boot time need to do some tweak at registry... change the enable prefetcher of boot time to 5 hexadecimel...tongue.gif
also untick useless startup at msconfig and unused services..
also manually assign the ip adress...smile.gif

if u enable prefetcher on xp/vista,ure boot up times will decrese but when ure running other software does it take a long time to load?

i have tried it on xpsp2 about 2 years ago and i notice it takes 2 as long to open office,winamp,maya...

does it happen to u?for xp or vista?cos i see vista's prefetching is better due to the file seeking..
