Why Demigod matters to Sinnners
A unified match making system and more
By Frogboy Posted April 7, 2008 17:03:33

Today Stardock and Gas Powered Games announced their partnership to develop and publish the much anticipated PC strategy/RPG game Demigod. Demigod is going to be a milestone PC game for a lot of reasons that will be made clear in the coming months.

So why should players of Sins of a Solar Empire care?  For one thing, it means that a sophisticated ladder, match making, account system will become a reality in the near future.  You see, Stardock, Ironclad, and Gas Powered Games are doing something that, to my knowledge, has never been done before. We three are combining our experiences and talents to build a unified multiplayer architecture.

That means your Sins of a Solar Empire achievements will become part of your account. Your wins, losses, and ranking (for those who choose to play ranked games) will be part of your account. You'll be able to find available games in Sins, Demigod, or The Political Machine (for starters) right from Impulse.  You'll be able to have a unified friends list, unified clan support, and much more that is supported by 3 games immediately and designed by 3 companies with a great deal of experience in this area.

Stay tuned, this is all going to happen a lot quicker than one might expect.

Sins of a Solar Empire v1.04 planned for this week
We're getting close
By Frogboy Posted April 7, 2008 23:33:32

While we're not making any promises, we plan to have Sins of a Solar Empire v1.04 ready this week.  v1.04 is the first serious attempt to user-requested game balancing.

We've gotten a lot of feedback in the past few weeks with some great ideas on tweaks to each of the different sides to make the game more enjoyable to players.  Obviously a lot of time has had to be spent play testing (and yes, we get paid to do this, so there, mom!) these changes to make sure the result truly is a more satisfactory experience.

Often times, what seems balanced (or unbalanced) on paper does not work out quite that way on-line. There are a lot of factors that just have to be played to be seen.  Moreover, a player's skill level along with strategy can completely alter one's perspective on balancing which has been both a challenge and quite enjoyable to observe.

Both Stardock and Ironclad play multiplayer games pretty regularly (we don't usually advertise who we are) and it's really quite refreshing seeing new strategies being developed over time that we never would have considered.  This is one of the reasons why updates such as v1.04 will continue to be needed -- as players come up with new, innovative strategies, we will have to continue to update the game to ensure that no single strategy becomes too dominant -- this is what you pay us for, after all.

If all goes well, we hope to arrange a game night with the entire community.

Im not so sure but i think you need to download the previous patches. You will be able to update the game with the launcher....you'll understand when you get the game trust me.

I know i hate Dota too...but its not about that...imagine the single multiplayer platform and GPGnet working together as one common platform. It will be easier for match making and as they say the more the merrier.

but but but,it's DotA with some polish. doh.gif I dont like it and i dont want that to have anything to do with Sins.I could say it's one of the best game i ever played from what i see from the demo.

I dont care if it's C&C3,RA3,DoW2 or anything else BUT not commercial version of DotA.

How good is GPGnet? Is it stable?

Maybe that could be the reason that patch 1.1 implement new network codes. They might be using GPGnet.

hmm.gif Hmmm yeah maybe 1.1 could be for that...GPGnet is pretty good...its a more robust multiplayer lobby compared to what Sins has now.

I don't know. I dont care either. But its GPG a big company. Its a business thing. And the most interesting thing is....Chris Taylor and his statements about the state of PC gaming. Now that they are gonna use stardock...no DRM...I wonder how Chris Taylor feels about the no DRM thing...Dont forget this guys dissed PC gaming because of piracy.

Aiyah you dont care about Demigods lah! tongue.gif Frankly I'm not interested in it and wont get it but its about GPG sharing multiplayer technology with stardock and a new online platform.

It's hard to not to think about Demigod cause it's a commercial version of DotA.Ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 tongue.gif

If Sins expansion uses DRM,im gonna blame it on Chris Taylor since he diss PC for piracy.Never really like his game since Dungeon Siege.

This is what i could find about Chris Taylors comment about the latest news:

QUOTE
"The PC business has changed over the past 10 years," he adds, "and we need to keep changing with it. Whether it's creating new ways to play, new ways to deliver the game, or new ways to interact with the community...." Pausing for a half-second to catch his breath, Taylor smiles. "This is the kind of stuff that gets me up in the morning!"

From 1up. It seems he has conceeded that PC gaming has to move on.

At gamespy an interview with Brad Wardell CEO of Stardock. Interesting Answer:
QUOTE
GameSpy: Does this deal mean you'd like to take a more active role in the gaming industry, perhaps working toward becoming a major publisher?

Wardell: Our goal isn't to become a traditional publisher but rather to help establish an alliance of game developers who work together to create awesome games that benefit developers, publishers, and gamers. I realize that probably sounds like pie-in-the-sky stuff, but the current PC game model doesn't work very well. It consumes game studios and leaves publishers with dead IPs and gamers without continuing advances in their favorite games. Look at all those great PC strategy games from years ago -- Star Control, X-Com, Master of Magic, Falcon, Total Annihilation. The studios die and their IP ends up in the hands of a publisher that has little interest in continuing them.

The question then, is how do we change things? Stardock's model is to turn PC games into assets for the developers through a combination of innovative publishing agreements and digital distribution. That means the people who actually create awesome games will benefit from their success for the long-term and hence have an incentive to keep working on them. Look at Ironclad, the development team on Sins of a Solar Empire. They'll be receiving income from their game for many years to come. That's pretty atypical in this industry. Normally, PC game studios see little to nothing in revenue after the game is released because of advance recouping and games dying off after an expansion pack. Gas Powered Games and Stardock are setting out to change the basis in which PC games are developed and published building on what was started with Sins of a Solar Empire. Even this early on, Ironclad, the developers of Sins of a Solar Empire have been involved in this project.

Do you guys realise that Sins beta didnt have a NDA. No non disclosure agreement that meant beta testers were posting picture and videos on youtube essentially marketing the game for them hmm.gif

digital distribution platform...Stardock style! No DRM! And you dont need to back up your games...if your copy get screwed you can redownload it even if you bought a hard copy! That mean no need to back up original DVD's anymore. Well i guess since you dont need to use CD's in their games i guess most peopl wont need to worry about it getting spoilt...but anyway its cool. Unlike the Bioshock crap(great game bad DRM mad.gif )

Its not jack sparrow anymore after you have bought it imho since the most important thing in a game is still the key withough the key its pointless.

Talk about my redundancy and inefficiency. BTW where can I download sin's 1.04 patch when it comes out on sinsofasolarempire.com I cant even find the 1.03 patch on sinsofasolarempire.com .

Well no reason for a Stardock game...Because as long as you have a cd key(purchased) you can always redownload it unlimited number of times.
