I hope they'll show the encounter between Gandalf and Thorin in Bree...."a chance encounter" indeed. Wished there was more of the Dwarven history, especially on the impact of the War between the Dwarfs and Orcs. Overall, quite a number of details included but will mostly be known to fans of the books....

QUOTE(BeastX @ Dec 17 2012, 07:49 PM) Some spoiler regarding Azog and Bolg (his son) a possible future of the 3rd movie I think PJ will put them both together (tag team?) as the Dwarven/Goblin wars was fought earlier and as you just stated, » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

QUOTE(shootkk @ Dec 17 2012, 04:06 PM) Ok. I'm going to do a little analysis here with regards to the movie and Tolkien's book. Actually, to be fair, The Fellowship does start off light as well, with the long expected party and it's related events...and only become progressively darker as the books move along.Don't get me wrong. The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey is not a bad movie by far. Great production values and special effects. I'm just a little bummed out that they dragged it out like they did but that's just me. As always, analysis cannot be made without revealing details of the movie so spoilers are ahead. I do agree on some of your points though...some parts were certainly unnecessary. Example, I thought the stone giants, while being well done, was really just for eye candy's sake. Added on December 17, 2012, 9:36 pm QUOTE(defaultname365 @ Dec 17 2012, 04:32 PM) It's based on the books. A film should never punish it's viewers for not knowing the source material. Oddly, it seems now that knowing the source material is what the problem is right now. I didn't even know "The Hobbit" was more of a children's story until recently. Hmm, however from my view, there were many references that people NOT knowing the source material would simply get overwhelmed with too. I appreciated it since I read all the books, but most non-readers would simply be wondering what that was all about perhaps? And some of those are incidental stuff that relates to LOTR but doesn't directly impact on it. The tie-in factor with LOTR was present because the film is an adaptation of the book and I'm confident it was seen an opportunity to have the references in it. Had the film been done just like books, the question would then be on why make the less menacing and the lack of coherence with the LOTR plot would come into questioning. Perhaps if I did read the book, I would have a different opinion altogether but I didn't. I didn't find much issues with the film at all except for the darn IMAX. I think my viewing experience would be even better in 48fps. On another note, the film has grossed over $220 million. I'm more worried about the tone of the movies...overall, The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey is pretty respectful of the books. I hope PJ doesn't screw around much like he did for Two Towers and Return of the King. Thranduil, abandoning the Dwarves? I haven't read the Hobbit for a couple of years, but I certainly don't remember this issue. Thorin's father getting killed in battle? I seem to remember he was captured and tortured rather than falling in battle. This post has been edited by axoloke: Dec 17 2012, 09:40 PM |

QUOTE(shootkk @ Dec 18 2012, 05:02 PM) Thank you! Finally! Someone who feels the same as I did. It's too long! No, the White Council meeting is by Tolkien himself. It was mentioned by Gandalf either in LOTR or in the appendices, in relation to the corruption of Saruman. (Saruman was leading the Council, and decided not to act against Dol Guldur while also trying to find the One Ring himself.)I think the scene with Galadriel, Saruman, Elrond & Gandalf is all Peter Jackson and not Tolkien. As with the meme: Padding! Padding everywhere! Added on December 18, 2012, 9:21 pm QUOTE(Mov_freak @ Dec 18 2012, 07:12 PM) Hi shootkk/soitsuagain If the 2 blue wizards appear besides just Radagast, then it'll totally be a new characterisation, as PJ will have to create them from scratch. Tolkien did not elaborate much on their fates, just a small throwaway line.Nice to know there are people out there that kinda/sorta feel the same way about the movie. Thanks you soitsuagain for bringing up Randergast, the brown wizard. Would be interesting if the two blues make an appearance in the 2nd and 3rd (ala Peter Jackson, tempering) Would be nice if things pick up a bit in the 2nd and 3rd... I think I had expressed myself poorly in my review in a sense that when I was watching LOTR, 1, 2 and 3, there were alot of thing I haven't seen in movies before, and it was like, one wow after the next. While watching The Hobbit, I keep getting the "been there" and "done that" feeling!! The sense of "wonderment" in a sense was gone... That, in essence was what I miss, in The Hobbit... My Addendum... Maybe for you, some parts are familiar because they pass through the same locales? Added on December 18, 2012, 9:52 pmRandom likes, dislikes and thoughts : Likes : Christopher Lee and Sir Ian back as Saruman and Gandalf! Scenes of how Thorin's Oakenshield nickname came about, and the Dwarven/Goblin war. Glamdring/Orcrist! Sting! Riddles in the Dark! Great scene between Bilbo and Gollum. Seeing The Shire and Rivendell again. Elrond being jolly! LOL, I didn't really like Hugo Weaving in LOTR, too much like Agent Smith. The Dwarven Company, nice camaderie there. Small references that reinforce the feel of the movie/world; the Witch-King of Angmar, Swords from Gondolin, the Istari. Dislikes : Stone giants...what was the point? Radagast going round and round with the Wargs...the scene felt draggy. Azog popping up and yelling....Chase Chase them! After a while, it felt like the Coyote and Road Runner. QUOTE(tonYe @ Dec 19 2012, 10:54 PM) The first half. All that talking without thorough explanation. Two of the biggest questions I have is... why can't Gandalf get the birds to fetch them all the way to the destination from the beginning? Why does he use Bilbo's house as meeting point without his consent? He also disappears for no reason and predictably appears at the right time. Why doesn't he use his magic as much as he obviously needed to anyway? Also, what is with the rocks that started fighting each other? Seems like this movie is made purely for the fans of the book. Still good to watch, given that I was ignoring these gaps. The Eagles are not "taxis"...this is one part I wish PJ had elaborated on in LOTR and now in the Hobbit. They are intelligent and even have a king of their own. But they also don't interfere if possible with the goings of the world. I agree that PJ didn't flesh out this aspect properly. As for the other questions, CNN covers some of it http://us.cnn.com/2012/12/18/showbiz/movie...html?hpt=hp_bn9 Added on December 19, 2012, 11:15 pm QUOTE(shootkk @ Dec 19 2012, 03:58 PM) Yes. This movie is made for the fans. Peter Jackson's fans to be precise. Tolkien fans? Not so much. Well...a bit of both I would say This post has been edited by axoloke: Dec 19 2012, 11:15 PM |

QUOTE(shootkk @ Dec 20 2012, 09:57 AM) Now that someone brought it up... I kinda wondered how fast the moth could fly!! Even the scene in LOTR was not following the book if i remember correctly. Radagast was passing along a message to this particular eagle for Gandalf, and he arrived at Saruman's tower and Gandalf asked him for help. I could be remembering it wrong though, need to consult the books In LOTR it made some sense as the eagle did not arrive to save Gandalf from Saruman's tower until quite some time had passed. In The Hobbit, it seemed like the moth could do supersonic speed and alerted the eagles and had them come to the rescue in just a few minutes. Taking into consideration that it tool some time for the eagles to get to where Gandalf and company were, that moth could have been flying faster than our modern jets could!! Meaning again, Gandalf doesn't go around summoning the eagles on a whim |

QUOTE(shootkk @ Dec 20 2012, 02:34 PM) You are right, of course. In the books, there were no moths. I was referring to Peter Jackson's version which was inconsistent. The time it took the moth to relay the message varied greatly. Thus I was wondering if moths on Jackson's Middle Earth could break the sound barrier in flight. Wouldn't it have been cool to see the little moth make a tiny cone shaped cloud and hear the sonic boom as it broke through the sound barrier? Haha..then it becomes another genre movie already...Top Gun Moth? Anyway, just good to have some discussions here on the movie. I always try to treat the movies as just another interpretation as movies and books are very different mediums. Some parts of LOTR also greatly annoyed me....but it is what it is. |

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Agreed for the most part....lots and lots of changes from the book and the tone of the movie seemed off. Not as consistent as the LOTR Trilogy. I might watch it again to see if my feel for it changes. Just some random thoughts : 1.) Beorn appeared in just a blink, a glorified cameo?? 2.) Tauriel/Kili/Legolas story....undercooked and the elves appeared like superheroes. 3.) The Bard background story with his ancestor knocking off one of the scales....I thought that was a good change, made it streamlined and linked nicely. 4.) Azog - annoying character change in Part 1 and still somewhat annoying in Part 2. 5.) Smaug chasing dwarves - Totally made up. If I remember correctly, Bilbo managed to escape, Smaug was cunning enough to realize Barrel-rider meant he got help from Laketown, hence he got angry and went to smack them. |
