Best forum is to get to know your juniors and seniors well, and if possible, architects from the outside world. Go have lunch or dinner or something after crits or on weekends. Try to talk about architecture as a whole, and not just bombing the school lecturers, for example...

Added on May 21, 2008, 11:39 pmBTW, azarimy, any contacts in UK that may want to hire a fresh grad through TWES? TWES is the only possible way for me to get to UK... Or maybe Ireland? biggrin.gif

I just started working in an architecture firm doing 3d design, photoshop stuff n working drawings (masterplaning, zoning, detailed drawing and etc) . And after a few months i find it extremely boring doing the same thing over n over again everyday. Is this normal? Do u really do this till u finish your part 3 and open up your own firm?

sounds like u're stuck doing desk jobs. looking at the stuffs u're doing, those are part 1 jobs. what's ur highest qualification?

personally, i find part 2 jobs are as exciting and satisfying as doing ur own thesis (final year) as well as working as a part 3 architect.
*
AHhh i see. That's y i think. to be honest i have no qualifications yet. I'm just in 2nd year diploma. currently on semester break. So i decided to try my luck n get a job for experience n knowledge sake. got the job using my portfolio.

Em, do you mind explaining a lil bit more on the jobs which u said are exciting? what do we get to do after getting part 2?

Oh okay. I get the picture now. Thank you so much for the explanations smile.gif

One more thing i would like to ask is about teaching architecture. How do u managed to find the time to work and still have time to teach? What are the minimum requirements before u are allowed to teach?

I'm almost done with my diploma programme and i can't make up my mind on which uni to further my studies. I would prefer a school which emphasize on sustainability and green design. Any recommendations? Local or overseas, doesn't matter.

Only god knows. i think they randomly picked who gets the interview. Seriously, my friends who failed their spm can even get it. While those with straight a's didn't. While some use "orang dalam". I will not comment further on this >.<

I would like to know, does our local authority accept the drawings standard produced by BIM softwares such as archicad and revit? so far I've only seen drawings from autocad. I'm thinking of learning these 2 softwares. Anyone have any experience using these softwares in practise? is it any faster?

it's not about the software. it's about the drawing standards. local authorities have specific drawing conventions, so regardless of whatever software u use, u must abide to these conventions. if u are required to submit digital copy, all those software can export to dwg, dont it?

Yup, that's what i asked. The drawing standards. It's similar but in some way it's not the same. Glad to know the softwares doesn't matter. And yes, both these softwares can export to dwg. Thanks for the quick reply smile.gif

Mr.Azarimy.. I just got my diploma with 2.0 cgpa. Extremely low. I know. Wasn't a genius at the time i entered college but is slowly picking things up right now. I do have a good portfolio though.

Just would like to know what are the chances of me getting into UTM for 1st degree program?

or perhaps any other local uni?

If i did not receive any offer, what other choices do i have?

but to be less dependent of chance, u should get a few years of working experience under ur belt before applying. 2-3 years should be good enough to boost ur merit. reason is, some people are not good at the learning, but very good at doing. so show them what u can do, and i'm pretty sure u can land a place somewhere.
*
I do realized that actually, i can't depend on my cgpa. If only i can show what i can do. The problem is how can i do that? Selections are done based on cgpa. Infact now registration are done online. Are there any walk-in interview or something? Really need your advice. I'll die for architecture. No matter what, this is what i want to do.

P/S: I did work during each and every semester break. Did freelance when school starts. And My cgpa actually never ever went down, just started with a very bad one biggrin.gif

I have some question to ask in terms of $$$ smile.gif

I've been working for around 2 years in this field and I've yet to take my part 2. All the shitty jobs which are thrown at me at the moment certainly ain't giving much $$$

Paying loans, car, house and other expenses is no joke especially when you're living in cities. My lecturer had to pay back 1.5k every month for his degree fees (bank loan) up to this day.

1. My question is, if i were to take my part 2, will i be able to earn at least 5k?
2. How long does it take?
3. What position should i be?
4. Any part time job related to this field for extra income?
5. Or any other business that we can do while still in an architectural firm?

I'm thinking of teaching/lecturing(once i fulfilled the requirements) and/or becoming a design director at the moment. This was the plan since i started taking architecture.

Would really appreciate if anyone can help or enlighten me in this matter as I don't really have anyone to ask.

Thanks a lot; I really appreciate your informative reply.

Personally when I design, I always bring into consideration the aspect of the building construction method and the buildable factor. Unlike the rest who always come up with their ultra cool, sleek, curvy, smooth, flashy, & flamboyant designs that would definitely give the building construction team a really big headache, plus give themselves a really big headache too when it comes to producing the detailed-construction & measured working drawings.  brows.gif  I just do not know why, but I am always very good & talented in creating & then working on my highly logical, technical, detailed, and complex designs that would be save to be submitted to the building construction team for actual construction.  cool2.gif  But sometimes, so-called subtle aspects of architectural design can end up making the project amazingly complex... For example, a relatively simple building design with a straightforward spatial layout will turn out looking incredibly complex after adding in the curtain-wall details, stairs, balustrades & the details, attaching columns & beams to floor slabs, and then adding in the fixtures & the furniture layout. (But in the end, lecturers just don't care or just don't want to give a darn about all this painful & time consuming details, instead, they would look & pick-on the big picture, which is the "Design-Concept", site-integration & response. At least from my experience at the institution I'm currently in.) Nonetheless, I am always very well prepared in justifying, defending, & giving "sugar-coated" reasons for my design! wink.gif

Regards.

I know how u feel man, happens to me too. But u have to think for yourself as well, who are you studying for? For yourself or for your lecturer. It's good that u have that knowledge which you yourself know that its gonna be used later on when you're working. The other thing is that since you already know what they are seeking for, why not emphasize on that area.

Last of all, i don't think your lecturers ignored your details, lecturers are like that.. they won't give you the face that they give a damn about your work but the truth is they evaluate you in every way they can.

Just my 2 cents.. Cheers~

what impossible requirements? why do u insist to see it your way?

like i've said time and time again, the problem is limited places. hence we select based on all applicants and put them on equal grounds. those who dont fit the minimum requirement wont get called for the interview. and we have indeed interviewed a number of IPTS candidates. in the end, it boils down to who were competing with them.

mind u, the highest IPTS candidate CGPA ever to apply to UTM is 3.30. compare this to IPTA candidates averaging around 3.50-3.65. are u saying that we should open a quota for IPTS students, regardless how weak they are?
*
If possible, YES!

My college is near impossible to get cgpa of 4.0. As far as i know none has ever got it. 3.8+ are gods, 3.0+ are those hardworking students..

It doesn't mean they're stupid, just that the standard are higher. Lower CGPA does not mean they're weak..

Local universities are recognized my LAM. Other than that, in general i think no one school is better than the other.
