QUOTE(mooze @ Feb 20 2008, 03:27 PM)
hey guys, i'll be flying to adelaide on 25th feb(next monday), i'm concerned about stuff thats prohibited for bring-with-me cabin luggage or check-in cargo luggage items..

first, about food product.. these are what i bought and plan to bring, do you think they will be confiscated or its okay with KLIA and adelaide airport?
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

i refered the website, but not sure if the items i shown above are listed..
http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/mail/cant-mail

also, anyone have more tips on legal/illegal items for luggage to australia?
this is kind of my first time going oversea alone, last time i went to London but i was 5years old at the time.... haha

ya, i know the food products kind of makes me look noobish but i want to make effort to save money thru budget eating for the 1st semester..
my financial aid AKA mara or shell sponsor will be approved(if it does) by end of my 1st sem.. so that means now i'm being funded by my parents, i really feel sad holding their life savings money but i promise to them that i would make the best use of it and succeed!! smile.gif
p/s 1 : other stuff preparing to pack into luggage bag(cargo); lots of clothes, sleeping bag, stationery(A4 paper and test pad, 500sheets each), hygiene products(usual stuff, but can i bring a oral-b mouthwash 300ml?)

p/s 2 : what about my laptop? bring in as cabin or cargo luggage? does the officer want me to turn it on or something and check files?? i have no idea
*
blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif sweat.gif shocking.gif

boleh tahan also your baggages, just bring wat you need, not all you needto buy just to save cost
yes oral B mouth wash is OK: wont be problem
your laptop hand carry
no, they dont have rights to check up your laptop content

and one more thing; while you are in KL, hardly you will go screen except for the 100ml liquids until you reach adelaide; you will be screen tightly in quarantine zone whistling.gif
good luck bringing lotsa stuff over thumbup.gif

KVReninem, its called "enforcement of standards", a concept very alien to Malaysians. In this postof mine, I made it very clear since we had the chance for a fresh start, let's at least lay down some ground rules for this thread (and I'm okay if you don't want to type properly, just don't ask stupid questions which can be anwsered in a FAQ in the 1st page), and some enforcement.
Don't forget the JPA students coming into UQ. biggrin.gif
*
okay haya; do you want to be one?

QUOTE(chris_c28 @ Feb 20 2008, 09:06 PM)
You really have to be here early to get a place. There is a severe shortage right now, so it is very difficult to get a place, even more so when you are a student, without income and no previous rental history. You'll be competing against others who have better records. I'd say let the market cool and search again in April/May. Rents will go up slightly as the interest rates are rising again (yes AGAIN), but when there is less competition, it is generally easier to get a place.

Why do rents increase with interest rates? That's because many investment properties being leased are purchased through a mortgage and as mortgage costs rise, so do the need to pass on these increases to the tenants. However, rents can only increase as much as the market value. Once the increase go above market value, landlords will find it difficult to rent it out and they wouldn't risk listing for too long as it incurs a significant cost to them.

A few years ago, the rental market is so bad that landlords are offering discounts, and free gifts to get tenants to sign a lease. Now, it's the opposite. It's just a poor deal right now.

pangping1510, there is another possible route, aint direct
KL>BRUNEI>SYDNEY
it is cheaper for malaysia as we are paying in ringgit, not paying in brunei dollar.

hrmm... two conflicting cases.. so if i hand-carry my laptop, they will ask me to turn it on or not?
it is safe to place laptop inside luggage bag? or still screened the same way as hand-carry stuff and asked to show to them?
*
make it simple, as long you are not in the dark side of the world is ok, porn, forget about it. just put in your luggage; show only when they ask
and please fill the form quarantine form properly.

QUOTE(limeuu @ Feb 22 2008, 05:37 PM)
they will generally not bother with your notebooks.......the pilot cases were sting operations, where there was a tip off, and it is NOT about general adult porn, they couldn't care less about that, but it was about pedophilia....which the oz authorities are REALLY serious about.........

and NEVER check in anything of value, like a notebook, from msia, especially going through klia, almost 100% it will NOT arrive...........i kid you not..........
*
to all coming,
yes, pedophile- tis is a big network worldwide and australia is watching over it tightly, beware what you doing on net and what you bring in
KLIA, LCCT has poor luggage handling system, you know anything can happen so pls DO NOT check in your laptop

QUOTE(mooze @ Feb 22 2008, 10:29 PM)
ok, to avoid the quarantine hassle, i just leave all food behind then..

next, about money.. currently i've got 1800AUD cash in hand, but relatives scold me for not making travellers cheque.. at first i did want to make one but when i went to maybank, they said they don't make travellers cheque anymore, not sure if it was just that branch or for all maybanks..

anyone have suggestions? i'm pretty sure i can handle the cash but of course being first-timer to go oversea alone, i haven't earn reputation among relatives to show that i can do it.. oh well, maybe they're right....  sad.gif

so could u guys let me know what/where correct procedure to convert some of the AUD cash in my hand to travellers cheque? lets say 1300AUD cheque

will there be any exchange rate conversion or something when i make the cheque since i've already got the AUD cash currency in hand?
*
wow, your hand i`m worry about, holding cash 1800 while travelling is so much risk. sweat.gif (ill rob ya if i can laugh.gif )
3 basic way to avoid being trap by robber/pickpocket/or conner ,

1.credit card-more limits like about 10K
2.bank draft or bank cheque, which later you can open a bank account once you arrive, a bank cheque is about rm8 if not mistaken
3.have about AUD300-500 in cash in hand in case any problem occur.

traveller cheque not really recommend from my point of view(correct me), cost it is more of travelling than student studies, dont be scared, aussie is pretty alright place unlike NY.

about you mooze, since you are schooling up with uni of Adelaide, isnt they going to sort of arrange people taking care of you? about your arrival etc.
and your food, you can bring some over but not all right(coz i see it is too much as in your luggage), but pls refer the attachment i pinned up on first page if you want to bring icon_rolleyes.gif
hope this clear your mind up abit.

nope, not gonna bring the food, end of that story, was kind of my stupid idea in 1st place, i dont even know how to cook...
though mum was kind of excited about the thought of bringing stuff to cook there, so she had listed and took these stuff when we went shopping earlier, then so many recipes she cited by words, i didnt try to memorize or write it down ..  blink.gif

so normal bank draft/cheque can be brought to aussie bank by hand?
but could i use the AUD cash in my hand to make the bank draft/cheque?

i dont see the difference between travelling cheque and bank draft/cheque..  rclxub.gif
*
Traveller Cheque
Bank Draft / Cheque

i`m kind enough to help you on this stuff, but honestly traveler cheque is really not recommended. icon_rolleyes.gif
about your foods, it is up to you, you better learn how to cook.

Prepare to wait several weeks for a Malaysian bank draft to clear if you deposit it here. Not to mention that if you lose the bank draft, you're screwed.

I recommend that you bring over maybe AU$500 in cash, and wire transfer (TT) the rest of it after you've opened a bank account. It takes only a few (3?) days to clear, and it's also very safe.
*
wkkay, any reason for take few weeks for the bankdraft to take several weeks to clear? any internal reason, coz i`m in sort of little trouble.

okay, so if i want to make a bank draft/cheque at Maybank, could i use my AUD cash straight there for it? or will they convert it back to RM first and convert back to AUD in the end before issue me the draft/cheque, which ends up losing my money bit by bit because of the rates.. sorry i sound so newb, i just want to feel 100% sure of this..
*

mooze
, this is beyond about the banking stuff, the best is to call the Maybank and consult what they can do for you.
actually you should just have your maybank and convert it from ringgit to aud.
Ask the bank, what they can do. smile.gif
