hey guys, i'll be flying to adelaide on 25th feb(next monday), i'm concerned about stuff thats prohibited for bring-with-me cabin luggage or check-in cargo luggage items..

first, about food product.. these are what i bought and plan to bring, do you think they will be confiscated or its okay with KLIA and adelaide airport?

ya, i know the food products kind of makes me look noobish but i want to make effort to save money thru budget eating for the 1st semester..
my financial aid AKA mara or shell sponsor will be approved(if it does) by end of my 1st sem.. so that means now i'm being funded by my parents, i really feel sad holding their life savings money but i promise to them that i would make the best use of it and succeed!!
p/s 1 : other stuff preparing to pack into luggage bag(cargo); lots of clothes, sleeping bag, stationery(A4 paper and test pad, 500sheets each), hygiene products(usual stuff, but can i bring a oral-b mouthwash 300ml?)

p/s 2 : what about my laptop? bring in as cabin or cargo luggage? does the officer want me to turn it on or something and check files?? i have no idea

You really have to be here early to get a place. There is a severe shortage right now, so it is very difficult to get a place, even more so when you are a student, without income and no previous rental history. You'll be competing against others who have better records. I'd say let the market cool and search again in April/May. Rents will go up slightly as the interest rates are rising again (yes AGAIN), but when there is less competition, it is generally easier to get a place.

Why do rents increase with interest rates? That's because many investment properties being leased are purchased through a mortgage and as mortgage costs rise, so do the need to pass on these increases to the tenants. However, rents can only increase as much as the market value. Once the increase go above market value, landlords will find it difficult to rent it out and they wouldn't risk listing for too long as it incurs a significant cost to them.

A few years ago, the rental market is so bad that landlords are offering discounts, and free gifts to get tenants to sign a lease. Now, it's the opposite. It's just a poor deal right now.

they will generally not bother with your notebooks.......the pilot cases were sting operations, where there was a tip off, and it is NOT about general adult porn, they couldn't care less about that, but it was about pedophilia....which the oz authorities are REALLY serious about.........

and NEVER check in anything of value, like a notebook, from msia, especially going through klia, almost 100% it will NOT arrive...........i kid you not..........

ok, to avoid the quarantine hassle, i just leave all food behind then..

next, about money.. currently i've got 1800AUD cash in hand, but relatives scold me for not making travellers cheque.. at first i did want to make one but when i went to maybank, they said they don't make travellers cheque anymore, not sure if it was just that branch or for all maybanks..

anyone have suggestions? i'm pretty sure i can handle the cash but of course being first-timer to go oversea alone, i haven't earn reputation among relatives to show that i can do it.. oh well, maybe they're right.... 

so could u guys let me know what/where correct procedure to convert some of the AUD cash in my hand to travellers cheque? lets say 1300AUD cheque

will there be any exchange rate conversion or something when i make the cheque since i've already got the AUD cash currency in hand?

nope, not gonna bring the food, end of that story, was kind of my stupid idea in 1st place, i dont even know how to cook...
though mum was kind of excited about the thought of bringing stuff to cook there, so she had listed and took these stuff when we went shopping earlier, then so many recipes she cited by words, i didnt try to memorize or write it down ..

i dont see the difference between travelling cheque and bank draft/cheque..

Prepare to wait several weeks for a Malaysian bank draft to clear if you deposit it here. Not to mention that if you lose the bank draft, you're screwed.

I recommend that you bring over maybe AU$500 in cash, and wire transfer (TT) the rest of it after you've opened a bank account. It takes only a few (3?) days to clear, and it's also very safe.

okay, so if i want to make a bank draft/cheque at Maybank, could i use my AUD cash straight there for it? or will they convert it back to RM first and convert back to AUD in the end before issue me the draft/cheque, which ends up losing my money bit by bit because of the rates.. sorry i sound so newb, i just want to feel 100% sure of this..

I arrived at Brisbane last weeks, explore Griffith Uni and QUT, wow bigger than msia uni, somemore QUT, UQ and Griffith Uni(south bank) located in the central city, i cant find any uni in central KL, but too bad in the city dont have something like mid valley or the curve. 
The road arent complicated like in KL, so.. to me it is quite easy to rememeber the road, buses has it own personal highway road which reduce accident and thats good.
I do miss my friends at home and my parent, my mom called me the other day, she misses me already... wanna cry T_T All because of my working life in KL need to work sat-sun which is overwork!! Somemore no OT paid. sigh...

In Australia crazy la, i asked the bus tour guy how much hours per day did he work? He told me he work for 4 hours and want take paid-leave tomomrow cause he overwork for just half hour. =.=" no idea he lies to me or not but i asked other Australian also say the same thing.
