Do you use a shoulder rest playing your violin? I saw some websites that doesn't encourage us to use it, we shouldn't be using our shoulders at all.

I tried playing without the shoulder rest. It felt a little pain at first but it turned out to be okay later. Does that mean that I should hold my violin using my left hand and chin only?

Try to visit a concert. The last time I went to watch Daniel Hope, I was inspired. tongue.gif Maybe we should go to watch a performance next year. I fell in love with Hanna Lintu the conductor. Maybe I'll go for the Welsh Sunday on 1 Mar, free admission. I think it's organ though. biggrin.gif

hmmmm... due to the large number of ppl who wanna learn violin, howabout we start a weekly gathering - sorta like a voluntary group class.

Of course it won't be as good as a private tutor but it'll be a good place to start to see whether u like it and wanna continue with a private teacher or not.

This sounds good. I've just started learning it for a year, it would be great to see the gurus. biggrin.gif

Btw, before I learn violin, I didn't really put its learning difficulty into consideration. I learn it because I love how it sounds. It's after visiting this thread that I found out the bowing techniques are considered difficult. It's not like my techniques are good, I thought everything else works like this.

So, if you really want to learn violin, don't be bothered by this. This is just what I think tho. laugh.gif

I started learning violin for 9-10 months already, if I'm not mistaken. I feel I'm not making much progress with my current tutor, please recommend me a good teacher? biggrin.gif

thinking of getting a viola lesson.
its now not bcoz of the long term period, but bcoz i finally realized im such a addict of those sorrowful+deep sound.

another info, i play guitar a bit.does this help me with stretching my finger for viola?
TQ

I think it should be okay since you play guitar and you're male. You finger should be longer than mine at least. Mine's short.. sweat.gif

Oops, you're asking about viola? I thought it's violin. doh.gif Sorry! I'm playing violin. But I still think it should be fine. You just need to stretch and practice. My teacher said with the correct technique, like lowering your thumb so that your other fingers can reach further, it's not a problem.

Let's wait for the pros to answer you. tongue.gif
