I think we tend to support the winning team...whichever team that on top will be our first choice of course...who want to support a team which is losing...that's probably the reasons many ppl support man utd..

QUOTE(Duke Red @ Jan 23 2008, 04:14 PM) I was initially inclined to support Manchester United, why? This sounds silly but it was because I thought they had a cool name. This was before I actively started watching football. I had a friend back then who was a big Liverpool fan and I heard names like Beardsley, Barnes and Rush being thrown about all the time. I decided to watch Liverpool play, heard "You'll Never Walk Alone" echoing around Anfield and that's when I knew there was no other club for me. Like you I started watching football before we had sattelite and games were far and few in between. Even the weekly roundup was 2 weeks old! This all happened around 1987/88. I then read up about the team (and it was difficult to get material back then when there was no internet) and fell in love with it's rich history and strong traditions. What i loved most was the clubs connection with it's fans, always giving credit to it's 12th man and recognising their contributions. The players were also down to earth and would stop to sign autographs and talk to fans at each opportunity. Stories of Shankly and how he was so in touch with the fans really go to me. Not only do I love the club but I knew that this club would love me back. I will go out on a limb and say that few clubs can rival Liverpool when it comes to support and it's connection with the fans. Anfield is seldom quiet and it's no wonder that we set the record for being the loudest fans a couple of years ago, a record that has since been broken by some American Football franchise. Funny that no one mention Gordan Banks yet...Schmeichel is a legend no doubt. I try to avoid using records as a gauge of a players calibre. I mean Reina has won the Golden Gloves 2 seasons in succession but no one rates him. Of the keeper that I have seen play and rate at least on par with Schmeichel are Dino Zoff, Peter Shilton, Walter Zenga, Thomas Ravelli and Oliver Kahn. I rate Sergio Goycochea, Pat Bonner and perhaps even Jim Leighton a rung below. I started supporting the team last week only. On a serious note, i have forgotten when did I started the team, one thing for sure though, is that the term Liverpool is one that got utter a lot in the family, as most of me uncles and father supports the team. I guess one day I just decided to stay upo and watch the weekly highlights and got hooked on since. Back then as mentioned by many here, there's no such thing as internet or Astro or forums. All we have to rely on are books, newspaper and what nots. We find out who the club signed after seeing it in the paper, which could be a couple of days late. What makes me proud is that despite the lack of resources our generation is managed to learn a lot about the club / team and we certainly appreciate the advancement of technology in this regards where we can discuss, learn as well as gossip about our club 24 hours a day. Compare that to the "newer" fans who had all these when they started supporting yet choose not to do anything about it, which is why I was seething about these glory hunters. |

QUOTE(Jonno @ Jan 23 2008, 08:56 PM) Funny that no one mention Gordan Banks yet... Peter Shilton had better records than Gordon Banks...but I guess his predecessor deserve some credits as well. On the IFFHS, Gordon Banks was second to Lev Yashin as the best goalkeeper of the century...but I guess most of us here didn't seen him play at all. Heck, some won't even know Shilton. Maybe they know Seaman...but I guess, that's just about it. The last of the great goalkeepers of England. Hope Foster develop well to replace the inconsistent Robinson.I started supporting the team last week only. Who could forget the likes of Haessler, Brehme, Matthaus, Klinsmann, Voeller then? and also the Euro 96 winning squad with Moeller, Sammer, Klinsmann? memories mate, memories...Germany has always impressed me with their workmanlike teamwork. nationalmannschaft at it's best. organised play, with a tinge of technical ability, IMHO are the recipes of success. too bad they had the lean years when Vogts and Ribbeck took charge though. I first followed Chelsea during the heydays of Gullit, in addition with the Italian Mob came to town. Cosmopolitan side then and now. that's a good 15 years ago. And followed Milan's results when they had the Dutch triumvate, right up until they have the new triumvate of Ka-Pa-Ro. Also, if Milan were to meet Chelsea in any European games, my heart is with Chelsea, simply because I'm a Chelsea supporter first and foremost. National teams that I follow include Germany and Malaysia, of which the latter no need to explain la. something like a Stephen Chow movie, no matter how good/bad also must watch. Good thread toshio... here's hoping it won't turn into another battlefield like the "real fan" thread.
My story goes like this: It started back in 1998, the year of the World Cup in France. I've previously heard of World Cup 94 which was held in the USA, but I've never really paid any attention to it as football wasn't my main interest (more towards NBA back in primary school days). WC98 showed me what football is all about. Dennis Bergkamp's magical goal vs Argentina completely bedazzled me, while Zizou's twin headers led France towards a historical victory over favourites Brazil. As one who has always supported underdogs, France was the team that caught my eye the most. WC98 fever spread like wildfire in our secondary school. We started to take heed of football action, mainly the premier league as it was the most publicised sport in our region. I must admit that the first team that caught my eye was Aston Villa, reason being it had a cool name. Sounds pathetic, I know, but that's the way it is. MU were the most hyped team back in the 98/99 season as they marched towards the treble. Almost all of my friends who started watching football became MU supporters, reason being it was the "best" team at that time. Not me though, as my penchant for underdogs pushed me towards the main challenger - Arsenal. And they say, the rest is history. Supporting a football club is not entirely about results, nor is it totally about the players. It's supporting what the team stands for, and what Arsenal stands for gradually became the main reason for my support. First up, the ethics, the values, and the traditions. In this modern age, football has regressed from a noble sport into a industry tainted by money and fame. Ownership changed hands faster than the speed of light, as shareholders are willing to sacrifice their team's tradition for quick money. Not Arsenal. Our shareholders simply refused to budge when foreign investors came waving with their big bucks, only David Dein spoiled the gentleman's agreement by selling his shares. I'm pretty glad the board stood by their lockdown agreement and kept Arsenal the way it has always been. The way the board acts also convinces me to support the club. Everyone in the board room supports Arsene with full trust, and he gets all the resources that he needs to build the team. Unlike teams such as Chelsea and Tottenham who sack their coaches just because their owners don't like them... Speaking of which, kudos to the club for having the farsight of building our new Emirates stadium. With revenues pouring in at a much higher rate than Highbury, we can survive on our own financial capabilities instead of selling the club to foreign investors which would undoubtedly put the club into more debts. For this reason alone, I am already impressed. Another thing is the club's involvement in charity. Arsenal has been supportive of various charity organisations, such as Childline and the most recent Treehouse. It may not be a very prominent thing on the pitch, but having the players providing some joy into unfortunate children's lives is indeed heartwarming. Arsene Wenger. Without Arsene, we could not have become the Arsenal we were today. When le Prof came over, he brought revolutionary ideas to the club. Gone were the booze parties and crap food. Diets and nutrition along with effective training methods extended the careers of the old guard till their late 30s. He instilled discipline and work ethics into the team, as his methods slowly affected the entire English league. What's more important is Arsene's Midas touch who turned Boring Boring 1-0 to the Arsenal into Blitzkrieg Wengerball. From the early days of Anelka-Bergkamp-Overmars, to the Untouchables' Heny-Bergkamp-Ljungberg-Pires, and now the most recent Fabregas Show; Wengerball at its pinnacle is the most pleasing football you'll ever see. Arsene's scouting prowess is second to none. He unearths young players like a rough diamond, and polish them into valuable stars for the future. Even for those who don't make it to the Arsenal first team, Of course, Arsene's stubbornness sometimes makes things frustrating for fans especially when things are not going our way. But that's part and parcel of supporting Arsenal. Thierry Henry. There's no reason not to mention our greatest striker whenever we talk about Arsenal. Yes, I'm not only an Arsenal fan, I'm also a Thierry fan. Thierry's name has been synonymous with Arsenal's for the past 8 years that he has been with us. His skills on the pitch are already well known, but I do admire him for his character off the pitch. He never gets into trouble, never go to parties, and used his influence to organise Stand Up, Speak Up campaign to oppose racism in football. He may have left us, but Thierry will always be the King of Highbury. I admit that I have soft spots for teams such as Valencia and Sevilla, since they are / used to be challengers of the "big" teams in their respective leagues. Yet Arsenal will always be my team... There's no way to divide the love. |

i was greatly influenced by his sportsmanship, and am supporting liverpool ever since. |
